Biography

The Anthony J Cox Trio knows how to deliver bitter/sweet pop rock. Echo laden guitars shine over deep bass grooves and thumping drums. Intimate melodramas that bite with intensity splashes of light and beneath the surface, alone in a quiet corner brood in darkness.

There is a rock/pop sensibility that combines with something heavier lurking in the dark corners and alleyways. Elements of Hunters & Collectors, U2, The Temper Trap, The Cure and Nick Cave all emerge from the mix at times.

Anthony currently plays solo acoustic sets and electrified sets with the 3 piece - The Anthony J Cox Trio.

The trio merged their musical offerings in late 2009. 2010 saw them develop into a harder more rhythmically edged unit but still giving us the layered, resonant and soulful experience we have come to expect from Anthony’s songwriting. The band have recently welcomed new bass player Neil Black to the fold and are looking to release a new single later this year.

Anthony recorded his first Ep "Sorrow & Joy" with producer Caleb James in 2009. The singer'songwriter approach delivered a result that was a thoughtful, multi-layered bag of treats. The EP covers the emotional territory of love, loss, relationships and well, everything in between. Songs range from acoustic, to rock, to anthemic; even tinges of gothic are thrown in for good measure.

4 songs from the EP were shortlisted in the 2009 Q Song awards and the song "Under the Light" was one of 4 finalists in the Rock Category. In February 2010 "Sorrow and Joy" reached the semi finals in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition and both "Sorrow and Joy" and "Heaven" were Top 50 finalists in the 2010 Music Oz Awards. “Sorrow and Joy” was also shortlisted in the Australian Songwriters Association 2010 songwriting competition.

Anthony has had airplay on community radio stations from Darwin to Warrnambool.

Anthony with and without the band delivers a live performance that is intimate melodrama and that can also bite with intensity. His songwriting is fueled by love and caffeine and explores the highs and lows, hopes and fears, loves and losses that we all experience.

Influences include U2, Powderfinger, The Cure, Coldplay, The Script, Muse, Johnny Cash, Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Michael Hutchence, Midnight Oil, Lou Reed, Nick Cave and many many more.

Sorrow and Joy

Written By: Anthony James Cox

I was thinking, I was thinking in my Soul
I was growing tired, I was growing old
I would sink, I would sink into a hole
I was falling asleep so deep

Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy

I was wishing I was by your side
I was wishing I was there tonight
I was hoping for the morning Light
To take us out of this dark night

Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy
Out of Sorrow, sometime comes Joy

No time, no time for Sorrow
No time, no time for Sorrow
No time, no time for Sorrow
I've No time, no time for Sorrow

Under The Light

Written By: Anthony James Cox

Maybe I could have had a lover like no other
I just seem to keep on losing friends
Well I'm not so sure I liked it before
But now there's something wrong
Like these are the words
To someone elses song

So tonight for one night only
Can you feel the love
And is it really love
So tonight for one night only
Could you be in love

Maybe I had a little too much wine
Or was it the full moon playing with my mind
But you cast your spell
You cast it well
I could not run and hide
You cast your spell
You cast it well
I could not run and Hide

So tonight for one night only
Can you feel the love
And is it really love
So tonight for one night only
Could you be in love

Maybe it was the full moon
Playing with my mind
But you cast your spell
You cast it well
I could not run and hide
You cast your spell
You cast it well
I could not run and Hide

Step into the light and out of the dark
Walk into this room and into my heart
I Could not run and hide

Step into the light and out of the dark
Walk into this room and into my heart
I Could not run and hide

I could not, I could not, I could not, I could not
I could not run and hide

I could not, I could not, I could not, I could not
I could not run and hide

Summer Is No Time For Sadness

Written By: Anthony James Cox

Summer dresses, summer lovers
Walking In the rain and holding hands
She is a melody
That was lost but now can it be found
Your heart skips a beat, you forget your lines
Never felt so blind

I can't wait to see you again
One last time to look into your eyes
And if I lived my life in vane
It would be worthwhile
Just to see you smile

Across a crowded room you saw her
Like a sidewinder weaved your way
Breaking all your own rules now
Said it was ok to be uncool
Boy your such a fool
Falling for you
Am I so blind

I can't wait to see you again
One last time to look into your eyes
And if I lived my life in vane
It would be worthwhile
Just to see you smile

She broke it to him gently
Piece by piece, let it fall to the floor
Now he used to walk with angels
But his feet drag on the ground
With the weight of the world on his shoulders
With the weight of the world
Going somewhere but nowhere quickly
On a speeding train he rides
And he rides
Screaming, Silently, Inside, Inside...

God bless to her everything she sees
God bless to her everything she hears
God bless to her everyone she meets
God bless her soul, her sweet, sweet, soul
Her sweet, sweet soul
Her sweet, sweet soul

Heaven

Written By: Anthony James Cox

Is it real
How do we know
Can I follow
Where it needs to go
There's a part of me
That is a part of you
Something In everyone
Needs to be free

I was on my way to Heaven
When I stopped to hear you call
I was on my way to Heaven
When I heard you knocking on my door
And all I have to bring
Were the songs that I sing
And All I had to bring
Are the songs that I sing

Is it me you want
Or what you need
We're all tired and scared
Of getting lost
But its me who needs
I need it all
I need, I need
To believe it all

I was on my way to Heaven
When I stopped to hear you call
I was on my way to Heaven
When I heard you knocking on my door
And all I have to bring
Were the songs that I sing
And All I had to bring
Are the songs that I sing

And it took us to a place that we didn't want to go
And it sang you a song that you didn't know
And you walked with me naked and unafraid
And it took us to a place that we didn't want to go
And it sang us a song that we didn't know
And you walked with me naked and unafraid
I'm not afraid
Because I can hear you sing

Not afraid, No not afraid

And you kick out the blues, kick out the blues

You

Written By: Anthony James Cox

I will wait for you
If you want me too
I will give you my everything
I will give you my all

Cause you... make my heart sing
You... you make my heart sing
you... make my heart sing
You... you make my heart sing

I was in a coma
I was fast asleep
I heard your voice come whispering
Take a chance on me
I was out there
I was lost
Lost in a void
I heard your voice call saying
Why don't you risk it all

Cause you... make my heart sing
You... you make my heart sing
You... make my heart sing
You... you make my heart sing
You yes it's you

They say home is where the heart is
Darling I'm coming home

Good Boys Don't Lie

Written By: Anthony James Cox

Oh yeah
I've heard it said that good boys don't lie
I've heard it said, I've heard it said
That good boys don't lie
Good boys don't Lie
I've heard it said, I've heard it said
That good boys don't lie
Good boys don't Lie
And I've heard it said
I've heard it said
That bad boys lie to get inside your bed
And I've heard it said
I've heard it said
That bad boys lie to get inside your bed

Oh you play the victim oh so well
That she can never ever tell
What you carry in your mind
So selfish and unkind
Oh boy you play the victim oh so well
That she can never ever tell
What you carry in your mind
So selfish and unkind

And I've heard it said
I've heard it said
That bad boys lie to get inside your bed
I've heard it said, I've heard it said
That good boys lie to get inside your head

Some say sorry's a kind of weakness
For some it's just an excuse
But to live without forgiveness
Not a thing that I would choose
Some say sorrow's a kind of weakness
For some it is their excuse
If I tell my lies long enough then I'll believe their truth
