Q SONG 2009 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED, TICKETS SELLING FAST

Q Music is thrilled to announce the finalists for Q Song 2009.

Judges have faced an enormously difficult task with almost 2200 songs entered in Q Song 2009, almost 800 entries more than in 2008. Each song was judged anonymously (track title only) by a team of dedicated music industry representatives.

“Judges were once again overwhelmed by the enormous talent of Queensland songwriters and the high quality of entries” Executive officer Denise Foley said.

EP Review in RAVE Magazine

ANTHONY JAMES COX – Sorrow & Joy EP TUESDAY,

23 MARCH 2010 (Independent) Still haven’t found what you’re looking for? Brisbanite Anthony James Cox has a distinctive voice possessed of plenty of uplift (and a slight lisp that has a purely cosmetic effect). A little like Bono, he can take any old words and belt them out in a way that makes your heart involuntarily swell. When he sings, “Outta sorrow sometime come joy,” you believe every word. His backing is bombastic rock with a few Aussie touches, like they’ve been listening to Hunters & Collectors (especially in the song Heaven) and late-period Nick Cave (in Good Boys Don’t Lie). This is slick and professional-sounding pop rock with a bittersweet edge that sets off the smoothness of the production nicely. JODY MACGREGOR

Bio

The Anthony J Cox Trio knows how to deliver bitter/sweet pop rock. Echo laden guitars shine over deep bass grooves and thumping drums. Intimate melodramas that bite with intensity splashes of light and beneath the surface, alone in a quiet corner brood in darkness.

There is a rock/pop sensibility that combines with something heavier lurking in the dark corners and alleyways. Elements of Hunters & Collectors, U2, The Temper Trap, The Cure and Nick Cave all emerge from the mix at times.

Anthony currently plays solo acoustic sets and electrified sets with the 3 piece - The Anthony J Cox Trio.

The trio merged their musical offerings in late 2009. 2010 saw them develop into a harder more rhythmically edged unit but still giving us the layered, resonant and soulful experience we have come to expect from Anthony’s songwriting. The band have recently welcomed new bass player Neil Black to the fold and are looking to release a new single later this year.

Anthony recorded his first Ep "Sorrow & Joy" with producer Caleb James in 2009. The singer'songwriter approach delivered a result that was a thoughtful, multi-layered bag of treats. The EP covers the emotional territory of love, loss, relationships and well, everything in between. Songs range from acoustic, to rock, to anthemic; even tinges of gothic are thrown in for good measure.

4 songs from the EP were shortlisted in the 2009 Q Song awards and the song "Under the Light" was one of 4 finalists in the Rock Category. In February 2010 "Sorrow and Joy" reached the semi finals in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition and both "Sorrow and Joy" and "Heaven" were Top 50 finalists in the 2010 Music Oz Awards. “Sorrow and Joy” was also shortlisted in the Australian Songwriters Association 2010 songwriting competition.

Anthony has had airplay on community radio stations from Darwin to Warrnambool.

Anthony with and without the band delivers a live performance that is intimate melodrama and that can also bite with intensity. His songwriting is fueled by love and caffeine and explores the highs and lows, hopes and fears, loves and losses that we all experience.

Influences include U2, Powderfinger, The Cure, Coldplay, The Script, Muse, Johnny Cash, Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Michael Hutchence, Midnight Oil, Lou Reed, Nick Cave and many many more.
