The 50 million Americans living with some type of long-lasting condition or disability are familiar with the reactions -- of people avoiding them and under- or over-reacting to their impairments. Individuals who are sight- and hearing-impaired or physically or mentally challenged are less familiar with public events that celebrate them. That's because those events, for the most part, don't exist.
The organizers of this weekend's Festival of Human Abilities at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach hope to lead by example with an event that highlights the creative talents and abilities of people with disabilities. Now in its third year, the two-day fest will feature a wheelchair dance group and a signing choir, as well as service dog demonstrations, storytelling and world music from the local band Bayadera, featuring visually impaired guitarist Dat Nguyen.
An aquarium hosting a festival celebrating the creative spirit of people with disabilities "doesn't make immediate logical sense," admits Kathie Nirschl, vice president of human resources for the aquarium. "But the point is every human being relies on the planet to live, and what's happening with the ocean is important to every single one of us. Finding a creative way to not only acknowledge all of the ways we're similar, as well as our differences ... that's part of this."

"San Bernadino Sun- Bayadera shows its abilities"

Date: January 27th, 2006
San Bernadino, CA

Fresh off her performance at the Inland Empire Music Awards and on a midday break from recording at a Rolling Hills studio, Gina Bandy -- Bayadera's lead vocalist -- reminisces.
"A music-video producer heard us once and said, 'Oh, you got thinking music,' " she said, laughing.
Whether he was referring to Bayadera's intelligent lyrics or variety of sounds is unclear, but either way, "he recognized we're not just looking for a hit; we want to connect people," Bandy said.
With that idea in mind, the quartet Bayadera -- all in their 20s -- are taking their "thinking music" to familiar waters this weekend; acoustic guitarist Dat Nguyen and the rest of the band wouldn't miss it for anything.
"The Festival of Human Abilities shows just how regular people with disabilities are," said Nguyen, who is blind.
Bayadera's been involved with the two-day event since its conception in 2004, and this time will perform two half-hour sets both festival days.
The festival exhibits the creative accomplishments of people with disabilities, which "is a good learning experience for people disabled and not disabled," Bandy said.
It's something the whole family can attend and see just how talented all kinds of people are, she continued.
"We, of course, encounter this on a daily basis," said bass player Chris Payne of working with Nguyen -- who's proved himself a virtuoso on the drums and bao (Chinese violin), as well as the guitar since his meeting Nguyen at a Cal State Fullerton music class in the late '90s.
For Nguyen, though, his musical feats are more relaxing than spectacular.
"Music is (just) my therapy," said Nguyen, who lived in Corona for a year and a half.
The musically-inclined trio -- Nguyen, Payne and electric guitarist Saatara -- formed Bayadera shortly after meeting. That's when they started organizing, but they were missing their primary crooner until she answered an ad in 2001.
"We were looking for a strong voice ... and star quality. In some respects, it's one of those things you either have or you don't, and Gina had it," Payne said.
Like most lead singers, Bandy has stage presence and a certain degree of moxie, but without any traces of rock star self-importance. Bayadera's strength has always been its creative sum -- not just each individual part, a mantra the group has perfected with age.
"Gina's the lyricist of the group, but we all collaborate on the music," Saatara said.
When Bayadera started four and a half years ago, each member would
write and work on music individually, then discuss it as a group.
In 2006, their methods are more sporadic and, subsequently, more adventurous. When writing new material, Bayadera doesn't follow rules or categorize their work into one genre.
Newborn riffs and words intertwine immediately and fresh thoughts are discussed -- on the fly -- at the band's jam-session approach.
"When we get together to write or record, it just flows. ... There's so much energy in our language and sound, the audience reads that, too," Saatara said.
This energy has garnered Bayadera distinction at the Orange County Music Awards in three categories in two years -- Best Live Acoustic, Best World and Best Alternative -- as well as a Best Pop Rock nomination at the Inland Empire Music Awards and an invitation to perform there.
"Playing in the I.E. was great, and we'd like to do it again," Bandy said. "There's a lot of positive attitudes out there."
"Bands were helping each other on and off stage. You don't see that very often," she said.

"OC Weekly: Poor, Drunk, Talented- Bayadera loves the Vietnamese Hooch"

A pall of heartbreak and depression had drifted into the Elephant Bar in Irvine the night the Mighty Ducks dropped Game 7. Everywhere, that is, except the comfy booth where the members of Bayadera had congregated. This band was beaming—hey, at least their dream was still alive.
After several delays, the band’s CD, 90 Million Miles, was finally finished. And goddamn if the thing ain’t a near-masterpiece of stylish electric and acoustic alterna-rock—a bit like Evanescence’s Fallen, only with a more free-spirited, guitar-fueled edge. Lyrically, they lean toward the personal: you got your romantic disappointments ("Reservation," "Crutch"), your straight-ahead love songs ("Hasty," sung in both Spanish and Farsi) and songs that foster hopeful, resilient fortitudes ("Broken Rain"). On one number, Gina Bandy sings with a warm, reassuring tone: "Break me up, and I will mend again."
Or mend the soul of anyone who cares enough to bend an eardrum. And people ought to, because Bayadera ("firedancer" in one Native American tongue) are easily one of OC’s most exciting, diverse and experimental bands. They have a lineup that would make an equal-employment-opportunity officer drool; the quintet’s ethnic backgrounds include Vietnamese, African American, Iranian and Puerto Rican/Slavic, with, naturally, a token white guy. Acoustic guitarist Dat Nguyen is blind, and drummer Adam Reesman is a sign language interpreter.
Of course, this wouldn’t mean shit if they simply played like a multi-culti version of Aerosmith or something equally bland. But Bayadera manage to weave all their cultural backgrounds into a unique, collective soundscape. Nguyen plays a bao (Chinese violin) on "Oblivion," a dark, haunting ballad, and electric guitarist Mehrdad Saatara plays both a fierce solo and a distorted sitar part on the scorching rocker "Doesn’t Matter."
Creating wholeness out of their differences and promoting tolerance are what Bayadera say they’re all about. "Each one of us is passionate about having a positive experience within the framework of the band, one that can sustain our individuality while we work towards the common goal of making great music," Bandy says, a UC Berkeley grad with the tough-yet-tender duality of a Chrissie Hynde or Johnette Napolitano. "We relish our differences. We’re people open to new sounds and experiences."
"And do you think any of them would have ever tasted Vietnamese moonshine if I wasn’t in the group?" jokes Nguyen, who came to the U.S. from his homeland in 1991.
Bayadera were initially a trio, formed when bassist Chris Payne and guitarists Nguyen and Saatara were friends at Cal State Fullerton in 1999. They’d sit in the quad and annoy other students with their loud, Violent Femmes-like acoustic strumming. As the threesome began writing songs, they realized something essential was missing: a voice. It was Bandy who caught their attention after a long, fruitless search. She answered an ad in the Recycler by sending the guys her demo tape. Bandy’s feeling-filled vocals, affability and charisma sealed the deal, and Bayadera officially became a quartet in 2001. Last September, Adam Reesman joined on drums, adding the perfect punch.
As Bayadera began writing original material, they were also eager to record. The plan was to recut a rough demo and add several newer tunes by the end of last year, but that didn’t happen, and a planned January release date got pushed back to this month. After investing way too much time relying on other people to help get their music out, they eventually realized that the only way was to DIY it.
"There were days when we were ready to kick and scream at anything that moved," says Payne, "but we’re thrilled to be finished. Nothing could replace the knowledge and experience gained by doing it all ourselves."
Now the band can focus on what they really love: playing live. Bayadera gigs are rarely ever the same. The band pride themselves on getting caught up in the moment, in reaching a zone where impromptu jams and explosive, ever-shifting dynamics are the norm. Plus, new tunes—some reggae-tinged—are being sprinkled into their sets, with a Doors or Police cover waiting in the wings to keep crowds who’ve never heard them interested. But even with their debut now in the can (and available on their website at www.bayadera.com), Bayadera aren’t about to relax.
"We really just want to tour, write and tour some more—we’re heading to the East Coast for some shows next month," says Bandy. "Plus, we’re so in debt, we can’t break up any time soon!"
- John Roos

"Music Connection: Bayadera @ the Detroit Bar"

Material: The words eclectic and ethnic only begin to describe Bayadera’s blend of sophisticated alt-rock. Influenced by its various ethnicities, Bayadera uses Arabic, Latin and Vietnamese musical styles interchangeably to broaden a resemblance to Fleetwood Mac and Rusted Root. Resisting categorization, Bayadera creates the opportunity to reach a larger, more diverse audience than the group would have if it had stayed within the confines of modern rock.
Musicianship: Only a band of ethnically diverse music grads could handle the challenge of such complex songwriting. Equipped with pipes comparable to Jewel and Stevie Nicks, classically trained vocalist Gina Bandy uses unnecessary effects that sound better on record than they do live.
Dat Nguyen embraces Spanish and Arabic musical styles effortlessly. As the band’s anchors, Payne and Saatara drop the heavy support and drummer Reesman keeps the speed of tribal beats while banging on everything from his drums to chimes, bells and congas.
Performance: The intention of this performance was to celebrate the release of Bayadera’s independent debut CD. Delivering on that intention, Bayadera organized an inspired set that featured impressive solos from Nguyen during stripped down variations of their heavier material, cover songs and freestyle jams.
Summary: The members of Bayadera want to take over the world with their diverse fusion of alt-rock and thus far have done well for themselves. Whether or not the world, or the music industry, is prepared for their eclectic blend of musical influences remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though, Bayadera is a band that refuses to be pigeonholed into one particular style.
- Richard Frias

"OC Register: Orange Pop"

The Orange Pop mailbox is overflowing with a wide range of new releases that actually outshine better-known major- label artists. Forget Alan Jackson and check out Fletcher Harrington. Dismiss the formulaic Jewel release and pick up Bayadera's debut.
You get the idea.
Bayadera, "90 Million Miles" (Global Line) - A creative combination of Western and world-music styles forms the backdrop of this far-ranging 12-song collection.
There is a mix of instantly accessible cuts, such as "Change," "Doesn't Matter" and "Broken Rain," as well as songs that blend alt-rock with more exotic world styles ("Hold Me" and "Hasty").
Lead singer Gina Bandy has an instantly likable voice, and the multiethnic group of musicians, which brings everything from Chinese violin (Irhu) and nylon string guitar to the table, creates a place listeners will want to visit again and again.
Bayadera will open for Wicked Wisdom (featuring singer-actress Jada Pinkett Smith) at the Galaxy Concert Theatre on Aug. 22. For more information, visit www.bayadera.com.

"Live Magazine: Feature article: Bayadera"

Bayadera
Bayadera is, without a doubt, one of the most organized and motivated bands in Orange County. Couple this which a rich musical diversity, excellent songwriting and a live show that grabs your attention from the first note and compels you to stare, mesmerized at the stage for the duration of their set, and you have a complete package!

Bayadera are also perfectionists, and they finally put the finishing touches on their CD, 90 Million Miles. Their CD release party, held at Detroit recently, drew a packed crowd. I was able to sit down with singer, Gina Bandy and guitarist, Mehrdad Saatara for a quiet chat at the band’s Malibu beach house.

LIVE: Bayadera's current line-up is?
Gina: Bayadera's current line up is Chris Payne on the bass/ back up vocals, Dat Nguyen on the nylon/steel string guitar/ back up vocals, Mehrdad Saatara on the electric/ steel string guitar, Adam Reesman on drums & me on lead vocals.
LIVE: How long has this line up been playing?
Gina: Mehrdad, Chris & Dat have been working on music together for about 5 years before I came along two years ago. Then we tumbled upon Adam last summer and began working on our performance skills. He was up and running with the rest of us this past January!
LIVE: Do you feel that this is now the permanent band?
Gina: I think it's safe to say Bayadera is now complete. All five of us make this our top priority and we work well together on all levels. Everyone is extremely motivated to make this work. One of the most challenging things about pursuing music is finding people willing to work hard and stick it out through the rough times.
Mehrdad: I would also like to add a full 30 piece orchestra and a slue of dancing midgets.
LIVE: You seem to take a very democratic approach to running the band, can you explain how decisions are made?
Gina: Decisions are made with the simple fact that majority rules. We usually discuss the matter at hand and if there are different opinions everyone is welcome to put in their two cents. It can get really heated at times but once the debate is over and we ask for everyone’s final vote, the decision is respected. It's not really that hard most of the time because we are all going after the same thing. We want the best band and usually it’s obvious what is best. Although when we debate sometimes I learn a lot from listening to various points made. Everyone has a unique perspective. It can be enlightening.
LIVE: How does the songwriting process work for Bayadera?
Gina: The song writing process varies. Sometimes we just start jamming at a regular rehearsal and find the seed to a song that will be developed in the near future. At times we schedule a songwriting rehearsal a week or two in advance. Everyone brings any material they've worked on and we take turns presenting it. There is really no pressure because we have no expectations. We are just there to listen and encourage each other. We give constructive criticism and try to develop one or two of the songs presented. But usually something will strike us or rev us up and before we know it we are all experimenting to see what captures the idea we are going for. There is no solid process other than the process off continuously trying
LIVE: Are all of the lyrics yours?
Gina: Yep, all the lyrics are written by the member's of Bayadera.
LIVE: A lot of the lyrics deal with insecurities and a struggle for identity, are these autobiographical?
Mehrdad: That’s a secret.
LIVE: The musical influences reflect the ethnic diversity of the band, but which specific artists have influenced the songwriting?
Mehrdad: One of the artists that greatly influenced me especially for this record is Aimee Mann .
LIVE: Have you noticed a musical evolution since joining the band?
Mehrdad: Yes, Dat is wearing shorts more often to rehearsals... I think we have all matured a bit on the music side, the more you live the more you have to write about
LIVE: Tell us about the east coast trip you are taking this month?
Mehrdad: We are basing the east coast trip around music festivals, and hitting the popular venues, so that we can promote at the bigger festivals for our other gigs, and people are already buying our cd on the east coast cause they heard about the group from the articles in the media out there.
LIVE: With the new CD out finally, are you planning a lot more live shows?
Mehrdad: Well not necessarily a lot, but the right amount with a lot of promotion.
LIVE: When the CD was finished, was it a relief or was there a void in your lives?
Mehrdad: It was both a relief and then a void which has filled with all of this traveling and playing. the relief was because of the amount of work that went into it, and the void was because we had scheduled our selves to the record for so long that it became a part of our lives for that period. LIVE: Thanks so much for your time and you know LIVE will be there for you every step of the way!! - Live Magazine

"OC Register: Shows Spread Bayadera Word"

April 29th, 2005
By ROBERT KINSLER
Special to the Register
Although Bayadera hasn't released a commercial CD since "90 Million Miles" in summer 2003, the group's profile has continued to grow over the past two years.
A seemingly unending series of tours up and down the West Coast, as well as major shows throughout Southern California have continued to keep the quintet deservedly in the spotlight.
And fresh off wins for Best World Music Band and Best Live Acoustic Band at the Orange County Music Awards earlier this month, Bayadera will headline shows on Cinco de Mayo in Huntington Beach and at a Friday-the-13th event in Fullerton.
Bayadera is clearly a band that defies easy categorization. On the surface, its reputation as a world-music group can be heard with elements gleaned from the Persian, Latin and Vietnamese roots found among various members of the outfit. But there are jam-band-styled overtones in the tradition of Phish thanks to the dynamic and extended musical workouts in the band's powerful live performances.
"We were all playing guitar together," said bassist Chris Payne, motioning to guitarists Dat Nguyen and Saatara; the band also features lead singer Gina Bandy and drummer Nathan Illes. "It started out with a flamenco and Latin influence. But we really became something when we brought in Gina."
Although Nguyen, Payne and Saatara founded the band when the three became friends while taking music classes at Cal State Fullerton in the late 1990s, Bayadera's fortunes didn't change until Bandy answered an ad in the Recycler in 2001.
The band's 18-month search for a talented lead singer has proved to be worth the wait.
"She sang the verse over the chorus and the chorus over the verse," Payne said.
"I've been a singer most of my life," Bandy said. "But I never had been in something like this. It was a totally different experience for me; at that point (almost four years ago), I was a total novice."
But Bandy's powerful and enthralling voice was clearly a perfect fit for the driving and exotic rhythms of Bayadera.
"It drained us," Nguyen recalled of a search that involved sifting through hundreds of tapes and holding countless auditions. "The age (of singers) ranged from 17 to 40."
In addition to the originality, songwriting and musical skills exhibited by Bayadera, what stands out is the band's collective work ethic.
"We're moving away from the 25-minute showcases," said Saatara. "Our shows now are more in the 90-minute to two-hour range."
Bandy said that when Bayadera heads out on the road, venues outside Orange and Los Angeles counties are eager to have the band play all night. And that fits Bayadera's style, especially since the freewheeling band is willing to play full-length acoustic or electric sets depending on the venue and audience.
"If we have three shows in a week, each of them is different," Bandy said.
And getting to the shows is never a problem for Bayadera.
"Marla is our bus," Bandy said of the band's most ambitious project, which was launched in May 2004 and included installing electrical, plumbing and bunk beds for band members when they are out on the road.
The band credits structural engineer Dave Galey with helping them complete the renovation, which has allowed Bayadera to successfully reach new audiences from Lake Forest to Lake Tahoe.
"We have taken four tours with her. She is very beautiful inside; I'm as proud of the bus as of our CD," Bandy said of the 40-foot vehicle.
Added Nguyen: "You step out from a show, and it's your home."
Saatara said the band plans to showcase unrecorded material at the upcoming performances, and many of those songs will likely be recorded this summer for a full-length sophomore release.
"In the music business, there is no right way," Payne said. "The right way is how you make it."
Bayadera headlines a Cinco de Mayo show that also includes Corday, Vesper and Yvonne Perea as part of a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society to be held at Martini Blues, 5874 Edinger Ave., Huntington Beach, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The band also performs at the Back Alley Bar & Grill, 116-1/2 W. Wilshire Ave., Fullerton, at 9:30 p.m. on May 13.

Bio

Hailed as "one of today's most exciting and diverse bands" (John Roos- OC Weekly), BAYADERA is back with a new ep entitled "carried away". This five time Orange County Music Award winning band combines strong solid grooves from a unified rhythm section of Anthony Valencia (bass), Donn Untiet (drums), and Evonne Untiet (hand and electronic percussion), with splashes of rock riffs with modern digital nuances, and melodic artistry from Saatara (electric guitar). Heading the group is sultry singer Katie Poe, who weaves heartfelt and introspective lyrics thru the band's musical landscape, capturing the essence of the human experience with her powerful yet delicate delivery.

BAYADERA has a rich history in the indie music scene having placed their songs on national tv shows for MTV, VH1, E!, and the Oxygen Network. They have shared the stage with numerous famous artists across the country such as Berlin, Sugar Ray, The Violent Femmes, Carlos Gomez, Arturo Sandoval, Stevie Wonder and Tito Puente Jr.

Their sound embodies a live rock feel, ska, R&B, and electronic music influences, incorporating modern guitar effects on tracks such as "Carried Away" and "April's in Peril". Lead singer Katie Poe delivers introspective and emotive lyrics on tracks "Sunny Sunday" and "A Story". BAYADERA's sound employs emotive lyrics encompassed by driving guitars and percussion section, producing entertaining, energetic, and dramatic live shows.
