Bio
Sydney-based singer/songwriter Behiye makes soulful, thought-provoking folk music with a middle-eastern twist. She draws on her Turkish/Australian heritage to create a distinctive blend of lyrics and melodies. Behiye's lyrical style sets her songs apart while her rich, soothing voice lulls her audiences.
Her songwriting style is reminiscent of artists like Joan Baez and Lior. ARIA award winning producer Paul McKercher made the following comments about her debut EP ‘Season of Plums’, recorded in 2010:
"I like the eastern flavours a lot, they bring a unique quality to Behiye’s music which is a rare thing to hear. Strong lyrics too, it's great that she is writing narratives & characters rather than the usual 'pages from a diary' style that is so common. Finding your own sound is always difficult & many artists never do..."
The EP follows a two-year period of writing/touring in Australia, the USA and Europe under an artistic grant; as well as post-graduate music study. Behiye’s recent shows include live to air shows at Bondi FM, The Rocksong festival (The Rocks), The Northern Beaches Music Festival (Manly) and the Lovejam Festival (Bondi). She is set to tour the EP in 2011 as a solo act. Her performances have been described as "polished and tasteful...great voice...beautiful songs". (Todd Hodgson of PJB Entertainment)
