Biography

About China Davis

If you are a fan of meaningful songwriting and artists like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, U2, Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam, you will probably like the band China Davis. Formed by brothers Ben and Ted Fuller in the once thriving fishing town turned upper middle class sailboating community of Gig Harbor, WA, China Davis uses the experience of growing up in a socially and economically divided community to write songs steeped in conflict and common values. What separates China Davis from most bands writing personal conflict, political and socially based songs is that their songs empower the listener in knowing that there is a greater good to be had; through hardship we can still dream and dream big.

China Davis may be an indie band but their music is not unfamiliar, it is rich in tradition and simplicity. Their songs range from simple folk to anthemic arena rock. It's really hard to put them in a specific genre without just saying "this is just a damn good band." They have a "song first" attitude that has been lost on many bands in recent times; they are a throwback to bands of old that defy definition and predictability and are critically acclaimed by Northwest regional press for their 2007 album Shadowdancing:

"(Shadowdancing) sounds like The Joshua Tree, Damn the Torpedoes, Highway 61 Revisited, and Born in the USA shoved into Eddie Vedder's juicer." --Matt Driscoll, Weekly Volcano (Tacoma, WA).

"Their style of rock is what is missing in popular music." --TargetAudienceMagazine.com

"This group is nowhere near shallow, speaking with their heart and soul" --Alecia Gaussoin, Tacoma Weekly

The band is made up of Ben Fuller on vocals and guitar, his brother Ted on lead guitar and their good friends Larry Bluhm on bass and Andy Stockton on drums. Larry went to middle and high school with the Fuller brothers and they have a long history together. Ben writes all the lyrics but most of the music is written with his brother Ted and arranged by the whole band. The band has played all over the Northwest and has played shows with many notable acts such as: Leon Russell, The Smithereens, The Supersuckers, Flock of Seagulls, Jerry Miller of Moby Grape and Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who.

Ben has also teamed up with three other local Tacoma musicians to form a charity fundraising group named "Music Giving Back" which produces music based events for local and national charities. Some of the events that they have put together have been the 253Heart Music and Arts Festival, Benefit Concert for Slain Lakewood Police Officers, Breastfest, Songs of Hope --A fundraiser for Haitian Orphans and many more. Also, China Davis has played the Pierce County AIDS Walk, Susan G. Komen 3-day and Northwest Folklife.

China Davis has an album in the works for release in 2011 and their song "Arctic Days" is featured in the trailer for the movie A Perfect Life by Chad Ruin, which is gearing up for a release in theaters sometime this year. Recently, both the filmmakers of A Perfect Life and singer Ben Fuller were interviewed for the arts magazine Eyes In for the film and song (due for a mid-March release).

Lyrics

Patriot < Actor

Written By: Ben Fuller

Have you heard the Gipper is dead?
He's no hero, only a figurehead...
Well that's all he'll ever be to me

We're throwing bombs like we're playing with toys...
In the sandbox our girls and boys...
only their hometown flags will fly half-staff for the dead...

We had a falling out yesterday...
The war planners are corporate masters and we're just the slaves...

Release the Pain
Build fear and the shame
sow seeds for the rain....

A crooked parent grooming his son
to know the criminals and that he's not one
Like father, like Son...

Waste no time flipping the switch
condemn the poor while giving breaks to the rich
it's a group effort to be the greedy ones

We had a falling out yesterday...
Private contractors and their war
While in the middle of the road we laid

(chorus)

"Watch this Drive!"

They talk of morals, faith and religion
not speaking in fact, only selling their fiction
God damn the sheep
God damn the theives

We had a falling out yesterday...
The corporate masters are Patriot Actors
We're ruled by greed 'till the grave

(chorusx2)

Cataract Man

Written By: Ben Fuller

Farewell to the angels for their time has come
Farewell to the pumas for the respect that hasn’t begun
Too many times turned weary by the instigator’s tests
Too quickly and undeliberate you became a handful of jests
Through all difficulty and humor I hope you’ll see it all
From your rock-a-bye cradle to your plaque on death’s well
Farewell to the beating of the sacramental drum
Farewell to the angels for their time has come
Cataract Man, take my hand
You’re blind and you’re falling down

There’s no need for the witch doctor for his medicine was used wrong
No need for the poet for the many battles he’s never won
Love is but the one thing that’s been keeping us alive
You’ll be orphaned and unwanted for under your watch it’s only time
Farewell to everybody who’s turned away and turned drunk
Farewell to the angels for their time has come
Cataract Man, take my hand
You’re blind and you’re falling down

Waste away wide awake
Waiting for a dream to take you away
Silver and gold, diamond ring
You only see the world as material things
Eye shadow, cartoon skin
Once upon a time never begins
The divine dream, reality bent
And happily ever after ends
When you take my hand cataract man…

Cataract Man, take my hand
You’re blind and you’re falling down

Honesty

Written By: Ben Fuller

Lay your head down on the cold-hearted marble floor
Sometimes you need to see the world down there
You told yourself a lie that you thought to be true
Catch yourself before you waste away into your blue
Take heed to the light of day and look for your home
Brave the violent seas where the violent winds are blown
And Honesty is the only thing that will bring you back home
When the saints go marching into Rome
They’ll still do as the Romans have done
And there’s no guarantees unless you promise yourself
to have a strong will to get you through this world
And Honesty is the only thing that will bring you back home
You play it all down to the preacher
You point a finger for you know he's sinned
By judgments and curses you send yourself to death
You thought you were my Mary Magdalene
You throw rocks and the water ripples
Spreading out like arms meant for no one
And Honesty is the only thing that will bring you back home

Coke

Written By: Ben Fuller

If love is broken I want its release
But I can't get this feeling out of me
I'd do anything to feel with you
But my blood runs cold through and through the blue
Kissing kills those saline kisses
I am up for it now and when I come down I'll miss it
But I can't lose what's left of me
Just to kiss her lips on the saline sea

If God has the eyes of gold,
It’s a God I'd wish for you to hold
Can you see the sky through your blue eyes?
Can you see the sky through your blue eyes?

A promise comes with expectations
Give me the keys and I'll erase truth with illusion
Kill me with kindness and kill me with grace
Until I find the lies hidden beyond the face

You look like passion giving up on love
For a sugar blade on your back like a friendly hug
Can you see the sky through your blue eyes?
Can you see the sky through your blue eyes?

Love is an ocean pulling beneath with pain
Everything you can predict will stay the same
So, let it go, your heart still bleeds
It’ll be the sweetest revenge you'll receive

I can't give back everything we've missed
Walk out the door into the shadowy mist
Heaven and hell collide in our kiss,
An Eskimo kiss headed straight for the abyss
And could we try goodbye, goodbye
Could we try goodbye, goodbye

shadowdancing

Written By: Ben Fuller

I spent so many years of my life learning how to pass away
When I'd carve my fate into my own flesh I couldn't listen to the advice you gave
Just to awaken in the morn, you could hear no screams; I had no axis to my world
Some men die without even knowing, I needed to get back on my way

So, I went Shadowdancing to turn me a round, I went Shadowdancing

Blood is an out for many a slave of their own will to breathe
And companionship is a lethal drug in the ability to freely think
As I testify to my undoing I hope you know it’s not just sweat off my brow
The shadow on the wall showed me that I was alive but I am still learning how

I went Shadowdancing to turn me a round, I went Shadowdancing

Preachers will preach "boy, you better pray if you know what's good for you"
But no matter how many times you try for God's help you'll never be rescued
Truth is laid at the bottom of a six foot grave dug by the shovel of speculation
But no one is mourning its loss; they'll just save it for another occasion

I went Shadowdancing to turn me a round, I went Shadowdancing
I went inside my head and now I am searching
I am getting ready for the fall
I went Shadowdancing to turn me a round

Bitter Melody

Written By: Ben Fuller

Cold to the touch of the hand
Falsely warm, you're not who you seem
A plastic, cellophane soul, you preach nature, invent all that you see

And her pain shows now
So plain somehow
Fake it by making rain
You’re sharing your pain
A bitter melody

Call off those mother's day gifts
Control she seeks, but it's not what she needs
She won't mean to bring you harm while swinging her arms
A bird breaking her own wings

And her pain shows now
So plain somehow
Hate it by killing the seed
Planted we breed
A bitter melody

It’s cold on this path in the winter
But, soon it'll be spring
The seasons do change
We’ll gather our wisdom as it grows
Like berries in the hedges
There is growth in the rain

And her pain shows now
So vain somehow
There’s so much left for us to learn
If you let the fire burn
Our bitter melody
And her pain shows now
So plain somehow
But child now that you're here
There’s no need to hear
Bitter melodies...

Arctic Days

Written By: Ben Fuller

Won’t you please remember me as I remember you?
I’m out on the sea looking for your port
Are you waiting for me at your shore?

Deep inside the hull I wonder of the men
Outside your walls who try to get in
Is it hard to remember who we were before?
Are you waiting for me at your shore?

You’re right here every time I call
And I know you call, you’re right here
I’ve missed you dear; I can feel you in my arms
I know you’re not gone, you’re right here

It’s been some time now and the rain showers me
Of all my deadly sins that drift away with the breeze
Is it hard to remember who you were before?
Are you waiting for me at your shore?

I’m right here every time you call
Leave the men outside your walls I’m right here
And tragedies… they're kept too close to your heart
They live in the scars and deep sounds in your ears
Need we pay up in bribes? Need we apologize?
Soaked to the bones in kerosene homes destined to burn
Set in our ways, set in our arctic days
Caught in the waves the currents freeze frame the years
And you’re right here; I’m going to fall
Right into your arms if you’re right here

Suit of Guilt

Written By: Ben Fuller

Your face and hips can’t conquer /Can’t conquer my soul I insist
Lies in black and white anger/ Bringing only shadows to persist
Paint me a picture / And sell me your darkest thoughts
Hopes are only wishes / Wishes the foolish have bought
In books of religion / The good is broken down or slain
I saw her standing / Standing outside in the rain
Maybe I was cold / Too cold to not give her my coat
But I remember flood in the courtyard / And the punishment she kept afloat

I want somebody to hold / To keep me warm in the cold/ Speaking words of truth
Now it is too much… too much to think of you
Can we tune out the bad news?
Now it is too much… too much to think of you

The rays still keep me warm in the sun / The suit of guilt you keep has won
You don’t have to hold my hand / I won’t fall down if I try and stand

I remember when you held me I was so afraid
I believed that we must have made a mistake
but my thoughts come in twos
Now it is too much… too much to think of you
Couldn’t we just help each other through?
Now it is too much… too much to think of you

Tears Never Die

Written By: Ben Fuller

Down in the valley dreaming blue skies overhead
Don’t know about you but I know that I am not dead
I am not looking for salvation to come upon me after life
Not looking for happiness owed from a beautiful wife
We prey upon each other bitterness, expectation and hurt
I’ve never known a love so true as the day that you said the word
I’ve been lost in this world but I’ve the confidence to get me through
I am holding our child up and wondering what she’ll make her life into

It is beautiful here in the garden
To wait out the days would be a waste
Let a river run through me
In cold blood I shall see
Wild horses must never be tamed

I set out for the wilderness; I’ll come back to tell you every story I hear
You’ll need a whole box of Q-tips to clean all the junk out of your ears
Got a sermon in my brain but I don’t know how it’d come out if said
Can’t stop this song playing backwards inside my ex-lovers bed
They are building a new drug so that you can feel the pain
All truth abandoned, Prozac showering nullified rain
Keep swinging that hammer down upon our fingers like iron fists
It’s never your fault when you are slitting your own lonesome wrists

It is beautiful here in the garden
To wait out the days would be a waste
Let a river run through me
In cold blood I shall see
Wild horses must never be tamed

Glaciers are breaking down as the world is warming up
Soon the world will be drowning and I’ll drink it from a cup
The sun is beating down upon the dry desert sands
That hadn’t seen life for a thousand years until it fell through our hands
The crescent moon is lifting every star’s hopes high into the sky
Silhouettes embrace behind the curtains before the man-child cries
It leaves me thinking that heartbreak is all we know to believe
Tears never die they just make their way to their mother the sea

It is beautiful here in the garden
To wait out the days would be a waste
Let a river run through me
In cold blood I shall see
Wild horses will never be tamed

The Only One

Written By: Ben Fuller

I was standing there acting like god’s only son
And I was first in line to clean my gun
Then I see her in the corner as she hits the lights
She’ll turn your head, turn your face front to the life…

You’re the only one, the only one

I’m the fool
Yeah she’s the queen
And everywhere she’d run I became
Who’s the cure, I can’t decide
But this night it won’t be your last

‘Cause we live, we try, we give, we cry
We stand alone, we’re here, we’re gone
Open the door, the sky, the shore
Look back at me, don’t you want some more
We’re ahead, we’re shy, we live, we die, we care, we run

You’re the only one, the only one

Well I am standing at the forest
I want to run in and feel the best
And climb up towards the sun
But the weather will be stronger there
I don’t know if I really care
So, I can’t say that we never won
You’re the only one, the only one

I can let you go… when you walk away…

Indian John

Written By: Ben Fuller

I saw it on TV right around midnight
A group of men said we’d find a new land
Then a man who claimed to be Jesus said New York would be burned
He had his apostles and he held out his hand

Indian John, where did the buffalo run?
To Canada or Mexico
Indian John, where did the buffalo run?
Did we run them up over the hill?

And I want to run where the four winds blow
All the colors of the wind
To run in the white of the snow
Indian John, where did the buffalo run?

I saw it on TV just the other day
Two embassies dining in our America
Could you call the other on the phone and try to settle something
But to drink from our bottles they held out their hands

Indian John, where did the buffalo run?
To Canada or Mexico
Indian John, where did the buffalo run?
Did we run them up over the hill?

And I want to run where the four winds blow
All the colors of the wind
To run in the white of the snow
Indian John, where did the buffalo run?

Come on and run
