"CMJ 2014 Announces Additional Artists"

Following the announcements of the initial lists of artists and panelists for 2014 CMJ Music Marathon, CMJ is ready to reveal the second round of exciting artists taking the CMJ stage this October 21 – 25. This year’s lineup is continually growing, including legions of extraordinary new talent alongside an impressive group of CMJ alumni who will take part in some of the over 1,400 performances at over 80 of New York’s coolest venues.
In addition to performances from the Horrors, the Kills, RAC, Bombay Bicycle Club and Slowdive and panels with Zola Jesus and the founders of Merge Records, CMJ 2014 will also feature sets from Brooklyn’s own DIIV for the first time since 2012 and A Place To Bury Strangers, who graced the CMJ stage back in 2008. Popstrangers, a group of New Zealand natives who turned heads at a 2012 showcase are also on this year’s bill. Sheffield, UK’s the Crookes and Portland, Oregon’s Hockey are also joining this year’s lineup, alongside an appearance by reunited Manchester rock icons James. This year’s additional performers include:

Circa Waves
Little May
Oh Land
Bishop Nehru
Ratking
Spookyland
Yellerkin
Splashh
Fort Lean
Moses Sumney

"Ten Tracks (Feature)"

Ok, here's an indie-pop heavy (for HBR) ten song playlist of new releases from the spiring/summer. Enjoy!

The Underground pt. 2 (More Underground) - Clam

I love the desperation in Johnny's vocals on the second go around. A noisy crescendo that peaks right as it ends, this is end of summer jam #1. Also, Clam is an excellent live band, I highly recommend catching them. Bonus: there are a ton of interesting videos on their website." - Hearts Bleed Radio

"Band To Watch: Clam"

LAST WEEK CLAM RELEASED TWO BRAND NEW TRACKS “UNDERGROUND 2 (MORE UNDERGROUND)” AND “CHICKA.” BOTH SONGS ARE EXTREMELY WARM AND WELCOMING BUT EACH HAVE A DISTINCTIVELY UNIQUE FEEL. “UNDERGROUND 2 (MORE UNDERGROUND)” IS INDIE GLAM ROCK AT ITS FINEST WITH A FANTASTIC TEMPO. IT’S FILLED WITH BRILLIANTLY SUBTLE GUITAR LICKS AND ONE HELL OF A BEAT. IT’S AN UTTERLY FUN TRACK REMINDING ME OF HOW GREAT IT IS TO DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW. “CHICKA” ON THE OTHER HAND STARTS OFF EXTREMELY CALM AND DANCEABLE BUT THEN SMOOTHLY TRANSFORMS INTO SOMETHING MORE CHAOTIC. THIS CREATIVE ELECTRIC GUITAR FILLED TRANSFORMATION FILLS MY EARS WITH WONDER AS I CONTINUE TO PRESS REPEAT.

REGARDLESS BOTH TRACKS KEPT MY HEAD BOBBING THROUGHOUT AND WITHOUT HESITATION THIS BROOKLYN BASED FOUR-PIECE IS DEFINITELY WORTH CHECKING OUT. LISTEN TO THE "UNDERGROUND 2 (MORE UNDERGROUND)" AND "CHICKA" HERE. - North End Records

"(Chicagoist Video Premiere) Music Video Of The Day: Secret Cove 'Alice'"

Today's music video comes from new synth rock band Secret Cove.

'Alice' makes its premiere with this post. - Secret Cove: 'Alice'

"“The Shades of Cottage Grove” by Secret Cove"

Today, we’re going back to the This is That Song mailbag. The mail sack has been one of the best parts about writing this blog, and today’s song has been one of the best things to arrive in the mail sack.

If you only listen to one song today, make it “The Shades of Cottage Grove” by Secret Cove (2012, from the “The Shades of Cottage Grove” single).

Secret Cove is an indie rock band who currently calls Brooklyn their home. I’m a little bit disappointed to report that they didn’t take their name from the title of a Choose Your Own Adventure book. They are, though, a band that you should remember the name of.

Secret Cove frontman Johnny Zachman explains their inception this way:

Secret Cove began on a flight between London, England and Accra, Ghana. The music has carried the five constituents from London to Boston, Silver Lake to Brussels, and a cottage in Michigan to a loft in New York City. The product is a combination of public transportation and existential angst, brought to life by Johnny Zachman, Kimberly Bunker, Phil Abbott, Sandra Canosa, and Mike Parker.

They’ve just started a pretty cool project where they’ll release a digital single and an accompanying video every five weeks. Today’s song is the first single from the batch. The second song will be released next Tuesday, although you can stream it now here. After the third, which is scheduled for September 18, they’ll hope to release a CD EP of the first three singles. They tentatively plan to issue additional digital singles on the first Tuesday in November and the third Tuesday in January. They’re targeting April 2 as the release date for their forthcoming album Interesting Times. If the first two songs that I’ve heard are any indicator, I’m really going to love their album. Fans of the blog probably will, too.

Although the music certainly speaks for itself, the video is first-rate, even if it is essentially a straightforward performance video. It’s not to be missed. Here it is:

There’s that tiny bit of synth-pop sound at the very beginning of the song, before everything fantastically collides at 0:13. I love how front and center of the mix the drums are. I love how cymbal-y they are. Everything else is also great, but I really like those drums from the drop. I was already won over by that point, but I immediately went from “hey, I kinda dig this” to “holy crap, this is amazing!” at 0:27. Everybody knows what a sucker I am for co-ed vocal harmonies, and what they have going on here just isn’t fair.

Johnny Zachman sings not entirely unlike Matt Berninger of The National, especially with his timing. Sandra Canosa sings not entirely unlike Kathryn Calder. That’s most notable at 1:49. After the whole thing breaks down at 1:41 for just a second, there’s a keyboard, minimal drums, and their harmony:

Tomorrow morning we’ll be far away

followed by Sandra’s Kathryn Calder sound-alike moment:

And everything I said
And everything you saw
Tomorrow morning we’ll be gone

This is a really fun song to listen to. Again, and again. And again. It looked like they had a good time making the video, too. One thing to watch for in the video is the focus on safety. Keyboardist Kimberly Bunker is all about hearing protection with her plugs. Drummer Mike Parker either has plugs or in-ear monitors. Safety doesn’t take a holiday, kids.

The singles, as they’re released, will be available at “name your price” via bandcamp, for purchase at iTunes, and streaming at soundcloud. Once they get to the physical releases, you’ll be able to get those via their website or at one of their shows. It looks like they play in Ithaca a lot, so if you live anywhere in that neck of New York’s woods, get yourself out to a Secret Cove show.

I have a feeling that if these kids play their cards right, they’ll be all over college radio pretty soon, and coming to an indie rock club near you. - ThisIsThatSong

""Alice" by Secret Cove"

If you only listen to one song and watch only one music video tonight, make them “Alice” by Secret Cove (2012, from the “Alice” digital single).

You may remember that I posted about Secret Cove back in August when they released their first single “The Shades of Cottage Grove”. I absolutely loved that song. It was more than just “one of my very favorite things from the mail bag in 2012″. It was one of my favorite songs of the year. Period. Like, maybe in the top six. The accompanying video is also pretty awesome. I highly recommend that you revisit that post about the young indie band from NYC-by-way-of-Ithaca.

As I reported back then, their goal was to release a digital single and accompanying video every five weeks, and an album in the spring of 2013. I think that process has been slowed down a little bit, but it doesn’t bother me. To date, they’ve released three digital singles (all of which are available from their bandcamp page at the “name your own price” rate). The first two have videos while “Black Lillies” does not yet have one.

“The Shades of Cottage Grove” was the first single from a “specific batch of eight”, which was followed five weeks later by “Alice”. I remember hearing “Alice” along with “…Cottage Grove” and being just as impressed. A couple of days ago, I was asked to run a feature about the video for “Alice”, and I naturally jumped at the suggestion.

While the lovely video for “…Cottage Grove” is pretty much straightforward performance/tomfoolery, the video for “Alice” (which, like “…Cottage Grove”, is directed by Chris Foito) is a little more, …um… conceptual. Abstract, even.

While I can’t rightly make heads or tails of the video, I like it a lot. It starts out like some “theatre of the absurd” play and by the end of it, that dude has a rave inside his refrigerator. What’s not to love about that?

And the song… Just like I did with “…Cottage Grove”, this is a song that I’ll play again and again. And again.

I really love the piano bit in this song. I like how it slowly builds in tempo and volume in the first verse. And I love the way that there’s the quiet/LOUD/quiet thing going on all within the context of the chorus. Of course the coed vocal harmonies do a lot to ensure that I love it, but even without that, this song is right up my alley. I hope that it’s somewhere near yours. - ThisIsThatSong

Bio

Clam took its current shape in 2013 when Eddie Kuspiel (bass) remembered that he plays bass. He joined Johnny Zachman (guitar/vocals), Joe McLean (keyboards/science), and Dave Lucas (drums) and the four set out to use their brand of noisy, experimental, dance-punk to celebrate life, love, and friends.

Clam (formerly Secret Cove) supports their energetic, enthusiastic, and bacchanalian performances with tight musicianship and an experimental approach to sounds, structures, and expectations. After recording the Secret Clam EP with the help of Wayne Silver at Ice Plant Studios, Clam has spent the last year writing, recording, and performing weird stuff you can dance to.

Clam has played Webster Hall (opening for Nina Persson), Brooklyn Night Bazaar (with The London Souls), Mercury Lounge, Pianos (sold out show), and many other venues around New York City and the surrounding area. The group is working on a new LP, and would love to hear about your favorite sandwich in the meantime ----> clammusic.com/sandwiches
