"Contagious Blues Band- "Ride""

“Amps 11 Magazine” article December 2007

CONTAGIOUS BLUES BAND
Ride
www.contagiousblues.com
Ride, the new CD by the Contagious Blues Band, shows
that even after some transitions and changes in personnel,
this talented band is here to stay. Junior Howell, drummer,
vocalist and all-around motivator for Contagious, says the
new CD is “essentially a live recording in that we recorded
the entire CD in only two days.
There was minimal mixing done,
so what you hear [on the CD] is
a lot like what you hear when we
do a live show.”
Contagious has been performing
in the area since 1999, but over the
past year or so had some changes
in band members. Even though
the new CD was just released, it has already been honored by
a nomination in the Best Self-Produced CD category at the
International Blues Challenge, which will be held on Beale
Street in Memphis in early 2008.
Although the CD has only eight tracks and times out at just
less than 30 minutes, it is a powerful production. The first
cut, “Bent But Not Broken,” is representative of the band’s
distinctive blues-rock sound. All of the songs are originals
except for Contagious’ version of “Blind, Crippled & Crazy,”
which more or less sums up the CD.
Despite the short length, the skill in the performances and
the infusion of a blues-rock feeling leave the listener more
than satisfied. One could listen to this CD repeatedly and
hear something new with each listen. The two lead guitars
balance each other nicely, and the drums and bass provide an
outstanding framework for the vocals. We can expect to hear
a lot more from this reenergized band.

Contagious Blues Band

A VETERAN IN THE MAKING:
Although it hasn't been around quite as long as the regional music veterans who grace our cover this week, Contagious Blues Band has churned out fluid electric guitar-based blues since 1999. The group is a frequent attraction at the Double Door and can be found gigging from Fort Mill to Durham to Mooresville, as well as treks west of the Mississippi.
WHAT'S NEW
Following its Halloween 2007 release, the band's new album "Ride" was nominated for best self-produced album at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The band will also represent the Triangle Area Blues Society at the Challenge in February.
SOUND
Contagious Blues Band mixes grooving electric blues instrumentals and vocals with classic and Southern rock influences. Joey Recchio's and Hank Shell's slide and lead guitar sound rings with a warm roundness. If you haven't caught them, fans of '70s ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stevie Ray Vaughan should line up.
