"A touching letter from Grace Vellia in response to 'Change at Jamaica'/ April 25th, 2013~"

I just heard your song "Change At Jamaica " .. It brought tears to my eyes as well as my husbands .. His dad was a conductor on the Long Island railroad for twenty five years .. And sadly he recently passed away ..
When my son was young my father in law would always say " Change At Jamaica Kid " when he asked to many questions , And we would all laugh .
He left behind 4 daughters , his son , and his wife , not to mention numerous grandchildren ... And your song brings tears to all of their eyes when they hear it ..
Thank you for such a beautiful and meaningful song for all of us .. Grace Vellia - Danny Brant

"Band of the day has everything to do with Danny Brant~ Wren Wertin"

With Band du Jour, Boulderite Danny Brant Schultz was a regular fixture on the Fox stage. Now an upstanding citizen of the Bay Area, the guitarist, singer and songwriter has focused the majority of his musical energy on his latest project, the Danny Brant Band. They return to the Vail Valley today at The Bridge at 10 p.m. with Bill McKay of Leftover Salmon on keys.

To Schultz, returning to Colorado is a bit like coming home. The move to the West Coast came at a natural point in time.

"I'd been here for a long time, and the band (Band du Jour) was winding down," he said. "It just seemed like a good time to try something new. I moved out there, and I wasn't sure if I was going to stay out there. But I lived on a sailboat in Sausalito for a year. It seemed like a good way to wind down from a decade on the road."

His music has been influenced by the city - specifically by the diversity of the people of the city. The different ethnicities and cultures offered him new rhythms and sounds to put into his music.

"Our music is an interesting combination," he said. "We've got funk, some Meters stuff, some jamming, like Grateful Dead or Allman Brothers, then you gotta add in some Van Morrison kind of stuff, some calypso, some reggae."

And shazam, it's the Danny Brant Band. It's a marriage of blues, rock and funk. In addition to his original material, Schultz's live shows include cover tunes ranging from "Hey Pocky Way" and "People Say" by The Meters, to selections by Little Feat, Bob Marley, The Allman Brothers, Taj Mahal, Jerry Garcia and others.

He's just cut a new album, called "Change at Jamaica." The nine-track disc starts with the title track, a song inspired by his childhood in New York City.

"It was raining, and I was thinking about the winter," he said. "I was thinking about my mom, and this really strong image came into my mind. For so many years, I heard the conductor on the train, whenever I was going to see the Knicks at Madison Square, or jazz artists at the Village Vanguard, on the Long Island Railroad. Wherever you went, you had to change at Jamaica. And the way the conductors say it is so distinctive: change at Jamaica, change at Jamaica."

Inspiration comes in all sorts of ways for the musician. Though he's not always writing, he wishes he had time to do so. As it is, he waits for the muse to call, and then he's off.

"Most people who do any kind of art can relate," he said. "Probably it's a weakness in me, but I can't sit down and say I'll have an inspiration. I couldn't sit down and think, OK I'm going to sit down and write a song about home, you can't plan it."

After their run through Colorado, the band is returning west to play in support of a fellow Californian.

"We're playing for a big party for this medical marijuana doctor," said Schultz. "Even though what he's doing is legal, the feds have been trying to crack down on him. We're doing a big party for him - we believe in the cause."

Though the new album is filled with short and sweet songs, Schultz likes to jam during his live concerts.

"This show is going to be really good," he promised. "Every time we've played The Bridge it's been just a great time. We haven't had a bad show there yet. It's fun, small and intimate. Come on down and you'll get a big fat discount off the CD."

"14th Annual Billboard Song Contest, 2006/ Honorable Mention for 'Change at Jamaica'"

"Nice lyrics and melody. Nice vocal melody. Good arrangement. A cool Van Morrison vibe here."

~ 14th Annual Billboard Song Contest, 2006/ Honorable Mention for 'Change at Jamaica'

“… sweet guitar melodies and funky, danceable beats…A couple of people lost their inhibitions to the grooving bass line intro to “Your Sweet Lovin” and the funky “Free Me, Baby” and wound up on the dance floor spinning and kicking to the beat. Every time Danny stepped into a lead, his body jerked and spasmed with each passing note. He didn’t just play the song, he felt it.”

~ Desert News, Salt Lake City, Utah

“… fan base that extends well into Chicago and California… original blend of New Orleans style funk, Southern rock, gospel, blues, and reggae calypso.”

~ The Vail Daily

“… highly danceable, and the lyrics often full of substance (like the plight of the struggling poor).”

~ The Aspen Times

“Danny’s songwriting skills… a visceral blend of funk, soul rock and even gospel.”

~ The Onion

“… a Colorado favorite for quite some time and wonderful to experience live.”

~ The Vail Daily - Billboard Magazine

Bio

One of Boulder Colorado's most loved and missed songwriter-singers is back. Guitarist Danny Brant Schultz, the brain child behind Boulder's Band Du Jour, is now a Bay Area resident and is rapidly building a loyal following with his current project "The Danny Brant Band".

Danny's original songs have quickly become audience favorites for their soulful melodies, southern rhythms and memorable lyrics. In addition to his original material, Danny's live shows include cover tunes ranging from "Hey Pocky Way" and "People Say" by The Meters, to selections by Little Feat, Bob Marley, The Allman Brothers, Taj Mahal, Jerry Garcia and many others.

Combining blues, soul, funk and rock, Danny's signature style is refreshingly original while eerily reminiscent of legendary guitarists Duane Allman and early Eric Clapton. Through years of live touring, Danny has gained new fans and reconfirmed old ones at each stop. His unique ability to connect with an audience gets fans dancing and keeps them coming back again and again.

HISTORY
In Boulder, with Band Du Jour, Danny built a huge dedicated following, selling out Colorado's most beloved venue The Fox Theatre consistently for over four years. The band toured throughout the state and quickly became a crowd favorite, regularly playing to sold out houses. Outside of Colorado, the band played to growing audiences in 26 states from coast to coast, in addition to performing at numerous large music festivals and touring Japan.

In 1997 after nearly a decade of touring, Danny moved to San Francisco. Living on a sail boat, Danny began a well earned rest from the road and started performing locally as the Danny Brant Band. While in the city, Danny played a private party for famed attorney Tony Serra. Tony's practice of defending victims of civil rights abuses, medical marijuana patients, American Indians, and other worthy causes inspired Danny to pass the California bar and join the efforts against injustice. Much to listener's delight, this period spurred a new era of songwriting and produced yet another set of outstanding Brant originals.

In the winter of 2000/2001, Melvin Seals, former organist for the Jerry Garcia band, was introduced to Danny and sat in with the Danny Brant Band. He quickly fell in love with Danny's original music and invited Danny to record at his studio. While recording, Melvin asked Danny to join him as the lead vocalist/guitarist for the JGB 2001 summer tour. During the five month tour, Danny got thousands of fans rocking throughout the nation and in Canada. Performing signature originals such as Sea of Darkness, Simple Song, Louisiana Rain and Artist in addition to passionate covers of Garcia classics, Danny's original style captivated audiences and kept them dancing at festivals and clubs alike.

Recently, Danny's soulful harmonica playing was featured on stage with Leftover Salmon at the famed Fillmore in San Francisco, and at the High Sierra Music Festival (with Bill Paine of Little Feat). After the festival, Danny continued to rock Leftover fans, by jamming with the band on guitar at the Veterans Hall in Peteluma, CA.

Danny is now back in the bay area recording, performing and touring as The Danny Brant Band. His work has been featured on two nationally distributed compilation CDs, as well as Band Du Jour's live release "Feel the Sun" and Roberta Donnay's "Soul Reverse" (featured on Nash Bridges). Additionally, his songs have received regular airplay on KBCO in Colorado and on numerous other stations in major cities around the country including WNEW in New York City, and on stations in Chicago, and Athens, Ga.
