Marilyn

MARILYN

IT'S A HOT SUMMER NIGHT NINETEEN FIFTY-FOUR,
DELPHI INDIANA AT THE REXALL DRUG STORE,

THE GRIDIRON KING IS WORKING LATE,
AT THE SODA SHOP,
HIS HIGH SCHOOL JACKET LAYING ACROSS,
THE ICE CREAM COUNTER TOP,

WHEN SHE SITS DOWN BY THE JUKEBOX,
IN BRAND NEW NYLON HOSE,
A HIGH HEEL TOSSED INDIFFERENTLY,
UPON A PAINTED TOE.

AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN MARILYN,
COULD HAVE BEEN JIMMY DEAN.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU,
IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME.

SHE TOSSES BACK HER PRETTY HAIR,
LAUGHS THROUGH RUBY LIPS,
CHILD OF FIFTEEN INNOCENT YEARS,
SHE HAS NEVER BEEN KISSED.

HE LOOKS AT HER AND TREMBLES,
HIS GRIDIRON COURAGE CRUSHED,
HE IS AFRAID TO TOUCH HER,
BUT HE IS SO IN LOVE.

AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN MARILYN,
COULD HAVE BEEN JIMMY DEAN.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU,
IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME.

HE PUTS A NICKEL IN THE JUKEBOX,
SHE STEPS INTO HIS ARMS,
THEY CANNOT LOOK AT EACH OTHER,
THAT DON'T LAST TOO LONG.

HIS CLASS RING ON HER FINGER,
RESPLENDENT IN THE DARK,
SHE MARVELS AT THE WEIGHT OF IT,
ON SLENDER HAND AND HEART.

AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN MARILYN,
COULD HAVE BEEN JIMMY DEAN.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN YOU,
IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME.

BEHIND COCA-COLA NEON,
THEY DANCE ACROSS THE FLOOR,
DELPHI INDIANA AT THE REXALL DRUG STORE

GYPSY

GYPSY
By Daniel Dean Darst

WE’D RIDE DOWN THE PCH IN THAT OL CAR,
EATIN SUNBEAM BREAD AND JELLY FROM A JAR.

WITH THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN,
AND THE CALIFORNIA SUN HANGIN LOW.

SHE’D SAY NOW GYPSY,
YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR FATHER MORE AND MORE.

WHEN I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO REACH THE STEERIN WHEEL,
SHE’D LET ME DRIVE AT NIGHT,
TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND THE RAIDO,

AND SHE’D SAY GYPSY, OH GYPSY,
YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR FATHER MORE AND MORE.

WE’D SLEEP ALL NIGHT IN THE DESERT WITH THE WIND,
SLAPPIN THE TIN, ON SOME OLD ABANDONED FLYIN A,
AND IN THE MORNIN WE’D BE GONE.
WITH THE HUBCAPS SPINNIN IN THE CHROME,
WE’D BE GONE, WE’D BE GONE.

SHE’D RIDE IN THE BACKSEAT PAINTIN HER FINGERNAILS,
SHE’D SAY NOW GYPSY, DRIVE ON DOWN TO BEVERLY HILLS.
BUT THE MAN AT THE GATE WOULD ALWAYS TURN US AWAY.
BACK UP THE PCH.

WITH THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN,
AND THE CALIFORNIA SUN HANGIN LOW.
SHE’D SAY NOW GYPSY,
YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR FATHER MORE AND MORE.

HIGHWAY 99
by DANNY DARST

I WAS BORN OUT ALONG SIDE OF A HIGHWAY NINETY NINE,
MY DADDY WAS A SON OF THE DUST BOWL,
HE WAS THE TRAVELIN' KIND.
A LONG LEAN COUNTRY BOY WITH A STETSON OPEN ROAD,
HE ROLL A ONE HANDED CIGARETTE,
HE GOT AN OKLAHOMA DRAWL .
HE GOT THE TRAVELIN' IN HIS SOUL,
HE IS A SON OF A SON OF THE DUST BOWL.

MY UNCLE BILLY BUCK WAS A REAL COWBOY OUT ON THE RIO GRANDE,
HE COME TO CALIFORNIA IN NINETEEN FORTY FIVE,
HE START HIM A THREE PIECE BAND.
THERE'S AN OLD SUITCASE IN THE BACK OF HIS CAR THERE'S A
PICTURE OF HIM FROM THE WAR,
AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE, A PURPLE HEART, A FOLDED UP ARMY
UNIFORM.

HE GOT THE TRAVELIN' IN HIS SOUL,
HE IS THE SON OF A SON OF THE DUST BOWL.

MAMA SHE PART CHEROKEE, SHE WORK HER FINGERS TO THE BONE.
BLESS HER OLE HEART SHE NEVER HAD NO NOTHIN',
SHE NEVER KNOW THE MEANIN' OF A HOME.
FROM L. A. TO BAKERSFIELD, STOCKTON,
SACRAMENTO, UP ACROSS THE OREGON LINE.
PICKIN' BEANS ON THE UMPQUA, APPLES UP IN YAKIMA,
BACK TO CALIFORNIA ONE MORE TIME.

I GOT THE TRAVELIN' IN MY SOUL,
I AM THE SON OF A SON OF THE DUST BOWL.
