Original funk/rock/jam band will hold a benefit Aug. 12 at the Monroe Irish Center

Monroe - Deep Chemistry, the Hudson Valley-based original funk/rock/jam band, will hold a benefit concert Friday, Aug. 12, at the Monroe Irish Center on North Main Street in Monroe on Friday, Aug. 12, from 9 p.m. to midnight.

All money raised will go to Hibernian charities, which supports the Monroe Area Food Bank and Our Fathers Kitchen in Monroe, which supplies cooked meals to those in need.

Originally formed in 2003, Deep Chemistry has been creating their unique fusion of melodic hooks and danceable grooves for the better part of a decade.

Here’s how the band describes itself on its Web site (www.DeepChemistryBand.com):

“From their musically rich home base of the Hudson Valley, all the way up and down the East Coast, Deep Chemistry has been gaining fans from their high energy live shows. Their sound can be appreciated by any type of music lover: it has the soul and funk for R&B fans, it is powerful and raw for rock lovers, and even jazz cats can dig on the sophisticated changes and arrangements.

“Going through a succession of drummers, the band has been stripped down to it’s two core members, guitarist/vocalist Devin Daversa, who lives in Newburgh, and bassist Zeb Kandros, who lives in Monroe.. The two share a telepathic connection forged from playing hundreds of live shows together and countless hours of jamming.

“Deep Chemistry has just released a new e.p., 'For This Moment,’ which is a collection of songs that showcase the band’s creative songwriting and subtle virtuosity. It also features the powerful drumming of Shane Chikeles (the Ataris, Joshua) throughout the album. Special guest Jeremy Baum (Shamekia Copeland Band) lends his magic on the B3 organ on two of the tracks.”

Central Valley — American Veterans Aid Fund’s music industry division, VeTunes, has launched its online music store, taking veterans fund-raising into the digital age.

Donated music from Hudson Valley acts B. Willie of “Bulletin” and “Deep Chemistry” are at the core of the American Veterans Aid Fund online music fund-raising program.

“Along with legendary musician Simon Kirke of 70’s super groups “Free” and “Bad Co.,” we consider B. Willie of “Bulletin” and “Deep Chemistry” elite troopers for this exciting fundraising program for veterans,” said Gregory Kelly, director of American Veterans Aid Fund. “People can go to our Web site or the VeTunes MySpace page, sample the music and purchase it for download, with the proceeds going to the American Veterans Aid Fund.”

Musician Simon Kirke has donated the usage of his song “Over There.” The song, to be made available soon, is about the anguish of a mother with her son deployed in Iraq. The VeTunes MySpace site sells CD’s of musicians that support the organization’s efforts. One dollar of every CD sale goes to the fund.

B. Willie can be heard live at Ireland’s 32 in Suffern, for an upcoming veterans fundraising concert, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3. Admission is $10.

"New Paltz Fingerpainting to Top World Record"

SUNY New Paltz is slated to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest fingerpainting on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Old Main Quad.

The current world record for largest fingerpainting is 16,400 square-feet, which was set by a group in London. The New Paltz attempt is being organized by Jeremy Holmes, a senior sculpture major and president of the Student Art Alliance, who plans to create a 20,000 square-foot fingerpainting with the help of members of the Hudson Valley.

“We hope to have 2,000 people all paint a square in the fingerpainting project,” Holmes said. The event is open to people of all ages.

A variety of New Paltz students are helping Holmes with this project.

“People with communication disorders to other broad majors, everyone who stops by helps with this project,” said Holmes.

The project is more than just fingerpainting. The reason Holmes created this event was for environmental awareness, “to see what can be done when people come together.”

“Guinness is exciting for other people but not for me,” said Holmes.

Beginning at 9 a.m. there will be a timeline for everyone who wants to participate. First, the participants will have to register their name and e-mail at the registration desk. Next, they will go to the paint distribution table to get the paint needed for the fingerpainting. Then the participants will paint their assigned square any way they wish. Lastly, participants will wash their hands and enjoy the food and entertainment for the rest of the day.

The idea for this event started six months ago. Holmes talked to Professor Ann Teed, who was part of a similar project at a different school.

Over the past six months, Holmes had to attend as many as six meetings a day with different departments, such as the Health and Safety departments, in order for SUNY New Paltz to comply with codes necessary to run the event.

Holmes soon felt that this project was “bigger than what was going on, bigger than we thought. I got to work with all different people, radio stations, and environmental groups on this project,” he said.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself,” said Holmes. Often working 12 hours a day to make sure that all the preparation will be done by Sept. 22, Holmes hopes everything will run smoothly. He also has the daunting task of collecting the supplies needed to create a 20,000- square-foot fingerpainting.

Holmes was able to get fabric donations from companies in NYC that would have otherwise discarded the fabric if he didn’t take it. Local hardware stores like the True Value in New Paltz and the Herzogs in Kingston have donated gallons of paint for the event.

Holmes was able to schedule musical entertainment, as well as get food donations for this day. Emergency Funk Band, Deep Chemistry, Kitchen Couch and Indaculture are scheduled to perform beginning at 1:30 p.m.

In the few days before the event, the fingerpainting committee is still working on the finishing touches. The canvas construction is still taking place and more paint is coming in everyday.

The final project will be a mosaic and there is no way to tell how it is going to turn out.

Other students involved in the finger painting committee are Jess Gaddis, Eric Mistretta, Sarah Marcisak and over 100 other people Holmes credits for helping with anything from putting up flyers to helping create the canvas.

The school is permitting the event to last until 7 p.m. but Holmes says he has no idea if the painting will be finished in two hours or 10.

Though there is still no set plan for the finished project that will be created on Saturday, Holmes does have a few ideas. One is to have the final project go on a tour throughout the U.S. to show others what can be accomplished when a community has a common goal.

Holmes thanks all of the people and businesses that have helped make this event possible.

“I’m really motivated to finish,” said Holmes. “We can’t fail with so many people pulling for this.”

The rain date for this event is scheduled for, Sunday Sept. 23 at 9 a.m.

Anyone interested in getting involved with this project can contact Jeremy via HolmesArts@gmail.com or simply show up on Sept. 22 and help contribute to the fingerpainting project. To learn more about the event and the people behind it, go to: www.fingerpaintingproject.com.
