Bio

Derrick is a Tenor who has both an undergraduate and graduate degree in vocal studies and opera. Although he feels very comfortable performing opera and classical music (he is currently in his 7th season with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto), he felt that he wanted to get his voice heard by a wider audience. He hails from New Brunswick where Irish and Celtic music is very popular, and he loves performing this style as well. He wanted to find a way to get his voice heard by audiences of popular music. This is where the idea of "Popera" came into being. Popera is basically singing popular music in a classical style. It allows people to enjoy the best of both worlds: tunes that are catchy and singable with a more classical trained voice performing them. Derrick's main influences have been John MacDermont, Josh Groban, Elton John, and Il Divo. All of these artists are introducing people to an entirely new genre of music that they otherwise would never consider. Derrick's second CD, It Is Well...(2010) features classical sacred and inspirational music. He is currently on a promotional tour for this CD which will extend into 2011.
