Dharampal is an American singer/songwriter who performs spiritually-charged music that spans a wide array of musical styles including gospel, soul, jazz & mantra.
Her new CD, The Essence, is a collection of ancient Indian mantras combined with her own eclectic offerings of original lyrics. Om Namo Bhagavatay is a contemplative rendition of the classic Indian mantra, but Dharampal keeps it fresh with a gospel-inspired chorus singing Oh while vocals rise high above the steady mantra in a delicate, heavenly swirl. In Infinity, she offers a prayer for wisdom in a pleasant fusion of indie and jazz rhythms together with heartfelt lyrics and mantra. Anand picks up the pace in a catchy, hip-hop-inspired, hand-clapping recitation of Anand Sahib, the Song of Bliss.
Dharampal grew up in Schertz, Texas, where the rhythms of country and western music mixed together with R&B, pop and hip-hop. Her musical style spans a wide range of genres and includes influences from musicians such as Nina Simone, Outkast, and Curtis Mayfield.
The name Dharampal (dar-um-pal) means The nurturer of harmony in Gurmukhi. Her name reflects her personal belief in nurturing faith in oneself, believing in oneself, and then elevating others to believe in themselves.
Dharampal says, I make music out of love. When I play out and sing, it's an offering of who I am and what I do. Her music is a reflection of that spirit of offering that comes from her own journey of healing and spiritual growth.
