"DoubleDownNation at the Hard Rock Cafe Chicago 5/29"

In today's hard rock scene, you're typically either stuck in the past or too focused on the future. Bands can't help aping their influences, but often enough, their allegiance to the 70's leaves no room for originality. On the other hand, groups pushing more modern flashes into the mix tend to lose the human element along the way. Luckily, Chicago trio Doubledownnation has come along at the perfect time, and is highly capable of understanding a much-needed balance between the aforementioned styles. Their songs beg for air-guitar, but their feet firmly planted in the sonic palette of today.

There's a bit of unique mystery not just in their individual identities - DDN's members are known simply as singer/guitarist A.L.M., bassist Dr. Z and drummer Harris - but in the songs themselves: The rollicking "Nico Said" experiments with cool sound effects and a dark aura while finding a meeting point between David Bowie and Los Lobos; Dr. Z's bass opens "Edge of Love" with a chill, smokey jazz vibe before the band sprints to the finish line towards the end; "Raggeady Train" showcases A.L.M.'s Hendrix-esque flair over an undeniable groove and "Time To Lose" is a fiery head-bopper, giving some muscle to its hypnotic blues-influenced rock.

Constantly gigging around the city - Reggie's, Quencher's, the Burlington and Township among their haunts - Doubledownnation is hard at work on a full-length album, but if their demos are any indication, it's sure to be one of Chicago's best local releases when it eventually hits the streets. - Jim Hanke
