HASINA

Hasina, Swahili for “good and strong,” is a Queens-based singer/songwriter/producer who released her album As We Are last summer. The set showcases Hasina’s eclectic songwriting and a voice that lives up to her name. Hasina proves to be competent in various styles, pulling influences from Prince, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and Erykah Badu, all while keeping a cohesive sound to the album with her distinct jazzy vocals. She just put out a music video for “Feel You” from the album, a particularly soulful single. With intricate chord changes and thick layers of harmonies contrasted by a simple chorus of Hasina’s solo vocal whimpering “love to feel you,” the track is haunting and evocative. The video, directed by Nichole Acosta, captures the sensual, delicate feeling of the song with beautiful black and white shots of dancers in a dark room. For the bridge, we’re brought into over-saturated color while Hasina begs, “Please baby tell me that you want me in your arms.”

She had a great band behind her, and their unit looked as though they were blood related. Whether they were actual relatives or just family through music, they made some feel good music with a hip-ness. Hasina’s cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together” was on point, and her original interpretation still let her own personality through. When I stole away just to see what was happening upstairs, Elizabeth and the Catapult were on stage, and during a break between their own songs you could hear the music from downstairs, causing Elizabeth to comment, “oh snap! There’s a party going on downstairs. We’ll go there after.” - Best New Bands
