Biography

Sara and Kevin have been playing music together since the day they met, almost a decade ago, which is immediately apparent through the exceptionally tight harmonies and intuitive pauses. They formed Homesick Elephant in 2006, shortly before moving from their home in Philadelphia to their new life in Los Angeles. The band name was inspired by Ruby, a homesick elephant who was about to "pack her trunk and move to Los Angeles" (so the Google headlines stated) at the same time as the duo. Although they are nice and settled in Los Angeles now, they still go on frequent tours around the US and Europe, and are regularly returning to Philly, New York, Raleigh, S.Walton, Seattle/Orcas, San Francisco, Nashville, Austin, Athens, Dublin, and Berlin.

Homesick Elephant's heart-wrenching harmonies, old-time instrumentation and homespun sincerity make you feel like you're a character in a Wes Anderson Film. Listeners tend to fall in love with the whimsically narrative lyrics; but even a casual observer cannot resist the old fashioned charm and sincerity of the live show. Their most recent release "The Pilgrim & The Pen" features string and horn arrangements for more of a "chamber folk" sound. On rare occasions, you can catch the duo playing live with a string trio - an event you can't miss! Traditionally, though, Homesick Elephant travels in the stripped down duo form with just 2 vocals, 1 guitar, and a mandolin. Their favorite shows are intimate gatherings with no amplification, but they have played just about every kind of venue from large outdoor festival stages, to seated indoor theaters, to small bars, to quiet living rooms.

Cigarettes & Bayonets

Written By: Homesick Elephant

Everything can change in just an hour
The Sunshine it can turn into a shower
The sun can run away and hide all day
But since we know she’s coming back it’s time and we’ll allow her

Christmas time it comes just once a year
and somehow i can feel it when it’s getting near
See the faces of the children and the beggars and the cracks beneath my feet
Sidewalk slowly disappears

Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonets and everything
Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonets and everything

Love is just some thing to pass the time
We sing about it mostly cause we know we’ll find a word that rhymes
But maybe underneath the gloves and hats
and scarves we packed up with our winter clothes
we’ll find the part that really is sublime

Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonets and everything
Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonets and everything

I’ve killed a lot of people in my time
And if they were all guilty I can’t specify the crime
My hands are stained with blood
but I will hold them up for all the world to see
And await my judgement patiently

Everything can change in just an hour
The sunshine it can turn into a shower
I haven’t seen the sun in several days
And everywhere I look are things I used to love
Are dying like neglected flowers

Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonets and everything
Let’s all sing the songs we cannot sing
Cigarettes and Bayonettes and everything
Cigarettes and Bayonettes and everything

The Pilgrim

Written By: Homesick Elephant

I’m picking up the furniture I didn’t get last week.
I’m picking up the futon on which I never had to sleep.
I’m looking in the mirror and I don’t recognize my face.
I thought I was a young man, but it’s my father
Staring back at me.

Will I make the same mistakes a thousand times,
Just to see if I’ll survive?
I will count backwards from ten,
Rearrange what I can’t change and start over again.

I’m picking up the pieces of a glass I don’t know how I broke.
I’m picking up the butts of cigarettes I didn’t know I smoked.
I’m singing silly love songs for a girl I never knew.
I don’t know why I can’t admit
I write them all for you.

Will I make the same mistakes a thousand times,
Just to prove that I’m alive?
I will count backwards from ten,
Rearrange what I can’t change and start over again.

I will count backwards from...
ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two,

One more time in all,
I’ll take the pilgrim to the ball.
And since the pilgrim likes it rough
I’ll have to say: “Enough’s enough.”

And if the pilgrim takes a drink
I’ll shake his hand and hold his eye.
Ask that he sometimes thinks of me,
Pray on guitar rosaries,
So glad I said goodbye.

I will count backwards from ten,
Rearrange what I can’t change and start over again.

Long Lost Love Letter

Written By: Homesick Elephant

I would love to love you
But you won’t love me back.
I would love to hold you
But you think I’ll hold you back.

When the night is falling cold, honey
I’d love to keep you warm.
Hold you in my arms, tell me:
What could be the harm?

There are swarms of bees around me
But I can’t feel their sting.
My bank account is full
Cause you don’t want no diamond ring.

Well I could live my whole life
Just to have you for a day.
But if I have to wait, well that’s OK.

You don’t think you need me
And I think you’re right.
I tried to write you a sonnet
But the rhyme scheme wouldn’t quite
Work the way that I intended, but
I’ll give it to you anyway:
You can take it as a token of the
Extent to which my heart is broken.

I think it could be mended,
If you would only try.
I know I’m not as handsome as that
Vegan straight-edge guy.

But if you feel like like a burger, or maybe
You’d like to share a beer:
I just want you to know that I’ll be here.

Miles to Go

Written By: Homesick Elephant

You fill the gas tank, I’ll watch the road.
You go to sleep now, little one.
The sun’s going down, there are miles to go
Drive til our eyelids droop and drowse
Headed South to New Orleans
The smiles forming round the corners of our mouths

Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh
Oooooh

You get the matches, I’ll bring the songs
Sing by the fire all night long
All night long

Chorus: We will teach our children what we can
And all we know will change and,
Having changed, change again

All we need is somewhere to unpack our things
And make us feel at home
All we need is somewhere to unpack our things
And make us feel at home
Home
And now we see the darkness is the darling of the light
And now we see the darkness is the darling of the light
And now we see the darkness is the darling of the light
And now we see
That all we need is something back
Yeah all we need is something back
All we need is something back
All we need is something back of ourselves

Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh
Oooooh Oooooh

Hold Me Close

Written By: Homesick Elephant

Close the book you’re reading.
You read that book every night.
Close your eyes, and I will get the light.

Tell me that you love me-
Tell me that we’re doing fine.
Tell me all the things that we would do - if you were mine.

Chorus:
Hold, Just hold me close,
Until it’s time to go.
Hold, Just hold me close,
Until it’s time to go.

If I count to 20,
Will you be there when I arrive?
Sometimes I cry, just to feel alive.

(Chorus)

Night, So quiet and bright,
Hold still, and wait for the morning light.
I – am painting a tragic scene.
I am staring at movie screens-
Can’t remember a thing I’ve seen.

Where are you tonight?
The night’s getting old,
And I am so cold.
Where are you tonight?
I’m not getting younger.

(Chorus x 2)
