"EXCLUSIVE! 'An Island Miles Away' by Hovey Otis"

We have some summery guitar pop for you in this week’s Monday exclusive, coming from New York-based singer-songwriter Hovey Otis

This week’s Monday exclusive is a slice of uptempo, radio-friendly guitar pop from New York-based singer-songwriter Hovey Otis. The track is taken from his forthcoming EP Fool’s Gold, which will be out in July.

Hailing originally from Vermont, Hovey Otis’s real name is Tim Davis; Hovey Otis was actually the name of his great-great-grandfather, who was an engineer and a professor at Dartmouth College. He began writing and performing his own songs at the tender age of 16, moving to Brooklyn after graduating to pursue a musical career. The Hovey Otis project was born in late 2013, and his debut EP Standing Alone was released in 2015.

Tim says of the song: “”I wrote this as a sort of a spur-of-the-moment thing. I was just getting back from a trip to Long Island, and felt like there was a growing distance between myself and the loved ones around me.”

With the track’s vaguely Hawaiian overtones, the obvious comparison here would be Jack Johnson. Bruno Mars is another name that springs to mind but as ever, you can make your own mind up… - Songwriting Magazine

"INTRODUCING SINGER-SONGWRITER, HOVEY OTIS, RELEASES NEW SINGLE “HARDENED STONE”"

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, Hovey Otis, releases his new single, “Hardened Stone” today, the first track off his upcoming EP, Fool’s Gold. Hovey Otis is the moniker for the indie acoustic music project conceived by Tim Davis, a prolific songwriter from Vermont. The follow-up to his 2015 EP, Standing Alone, Fool’s Gold is set to release in summer 2016.

Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont, Davis began songwriting at age 16 and played gigs regularly around his hometown, including at the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival and Stowe Mountain Resort Concert Series. Soon after graduating college, Davis moved to Brooklyn to broaden his audience and his lifestyle. It was in the Fall of 2013 that his music project, Hovey Otis, was born. He teamed up with producer Rob Stroup in Portland, OR who produced his debut release EP, Standing Alone. In early 2016, Davis recorded four more tracks which comprise his upcoming EP, Fool’s Gold.

"Four More Local Albums You Probably Haven't Heard"

Hovey Otis is a project helmed by local singer-songwriter Tim Davis. Armed with a batch of songs, Davis journeyed to Portland, Ore., earlier this year to record with producer and engineer Rob Stroup. Davis credits Stroup with helping to unearth the essence of his nascent material and produce the five-song suite that became Hovey Otis' recently released debut, Standing Alone.

Davis is a talented songwriter and vocalist whose catchy tunes fit snugly within folk-pop archetypes. What sets him apart is a sly lyrical bent that puts a fresh spin on time-honored topics of love, life and traveling. For his part, Stroup's orchestration, from the pedal-steel-laced opener "Standing Alone" to the syncopated Southwest groove of "New Mexico" to the vast sonic expanse of "Your Story," makes Davis' debut more than just another record from a white dude with a guitar. It's a promising start. - Seven Days

"CD Review: New Music From Singer/Songwriters Suzanne Jarvie, Dan Medakovic & Hovey Otis"

From Burlington, VT comes the debut EP from Hovey Otis, led by singer/songwriter Tim Davis. The new release entitled "Standing Alone" was produced by Rob Stroup at 8 Ball Studio in Portland, OR and features five songs that deal with love and loss. The album begins with the warm folk sounds of "Standing Alone" then tells the story of love a first sight in "Girl With No Name." Hovey Otis picks up the tempo on the folk/rock of "New Mexico," before closing with "Your Story" as lead singer Tim Davis's vocals draws up similarities to John Mayer on this smooth ballad. Bio

In 2007 a 16 year old Tim Davis started writing and composing original music about his life growing up in Burlington, Vermont. These songs were surrounded around nature, life experiments and finding his own way in the world. Through the years, Tim's passion for songwriting grew. In 2014 he decided to collect materials for his first release since 2009. in September of 2014 the EP Standing Alone  was recorded and released under the alias Hovey Otis. The name was derived from his great great grandfather who to him, was an exemplary man that showed qualities of life that have seemed to be lost in today's society. The music of Hovey Otis shows honesty, authenticity of life as well as an optimistic sense of the world.

After moving from Vermont to Brooklyn, New York he was submersed into a culture that he had been yearning for while in his small town home. The ability to be anonymous and reach beyond his comfort zone allowed Hovey to push his own limits socially, giving him a new outlook on life. New experiences, scenes, lovers and opportunities inspire Hovey Otis. However, it is his honesty, authenticity and passion that write the songs.
