James Sidebottom is not just another Acoustic Singer-Songwriter. He aims to make a noisy room silent, have people laugh, and then leave his performances with a melody stuck in their heads for days after. He has been described as "Like finding an extra piece of chocolate in the fridge."... Yum!

Biography

"Songs with infectious melodies matched with intelligent, romantic lyrics” and “A voice suggesting Jeff Buckley, Pete Murray, Dave Matthews and Eddie Vedder"
"the prodigiously talented singer/guitarist, James Sidebottom”
- Billy Pinnell (Music Australia Guide)

"Some serious blue eyed soul. So different. Fantastic."
-Marcia Hines (Australian Music Icon, Australian Idol Judge)

"Like finding an extra piece of chocolate in the fridge."
-Kyle Sandilands (Austereo Radio DJ, Australian Idol Judge)

"Great voice and he knows how to perform very very very well"
-Ian "Dicko" Dickson (Australian Idol Judge)

"Could be the biggest thing to come out of Ballarat since Plugger. His Voice Strikes you"
-Jeff Jenkins RRR / Impress.

James Sidebottom is a Melbourne based singer songwriter originally from Ballarat. Having taught himself the guitar in high school, he set about honing his craft playing some of Melbourne’s most intimate and not so intimate stages.
Fronting the band “Last Five Days” for a few years, he then set himself the challenge to play solo in 2007. Having quickly realised the perils of solo adventure, James’ live act became more focussed and sure footed.
In 2008 James was headhunted to appear on the television show Australian Idol. After impressing the judges with his "blue eyed soul" he was banished from the competition in an expletive-ridden tirade by Ian Dickson for suggesting that winning the show "wasn't the be all and end all." Having enjoyed and learned much from his extremely brief "reality" television experience, James decided it was time to try something new.
So in early 2009 James joined an out of control musical explosion of a funk band called The Skylines.
James Sidebottom continues to enjoy his musical evolution. He plays regularly around Melbourne with his band The Skylines and as a solo acoustic performer.
He has played gigs alongside the likes of Mark Seymour, Whitley, Jack Jones and Ryan Meeking at iconic venues including The Corner, The Espy and The Northcote Social Club.
Incorporating well honed personal lyrics, strong melodic vocal performance, interesting guitar manipulation and additional guitar and vocal looping, James Sidebottom’s mix of acoustic folk pop is quickly gaining notoriety... In a good way.

Lyrics

Sidebottom Blues

Written By: James Sidebottom

Feel no shame
Feel no shame
It was my father's father's father's name and I feel no shame.

When I was young and I was teased
Sometimes I'd fall to my knees and cry
why oh why?
My mother said don't be sad
The same thing happened to your Dad
Look at him now, he's a better man.
And so
I Feel no shame
I Feel no shame
It was my father's father's father's name and I feel no shame.

Now I'm older now I'm proud
Sometimes I like to shout aloud
My name, is who I am.
My family they're not a curse
They're my best friends
you know what's worse?
A family who just can't get along.
So
I Feel no shame
No I Feel no shame
It was my father's father's father's name and I feel no shame

Well I'm James Sidebottom
that's my name
If you laugh, there's no blame
You know I'd probably laugh along with you.
But remember that a name's just that,
It's a cover that surrounds the fact
That you're the same as me and I'm the same as you.
So
I Feel no shame
No I Feel no shame
It was my father's father's father's name and I feel no shame.

The News

Written By: James Sidebottom

I've been listening to you
for such a long long time
such a long long time.
I don't know what to do
'Coz I'm slowly losing my
mind mind mind.

You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why
Am I listening, listening to the News?

You got stories about some murdering thieves
And it makes me sad,
yeah it makes me sad

You got cross promotional sensibilities.
And I think that's bad,
Yeah I think that's bad.

You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
Am I listening, listening to the News?

You think that you're providing us a service.
By diggin' up dirt and spillin' it on the rest of us.
Lightening our spirits in the last five minutes with an animal giving birth.
It's such a strange way to start and end the day.

You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
You talk drivel in the morning
Drivel in the evening why?
Am I listening, listening to the News?

Favourite One

Written By: James Sidebottom

I saw a man dancing down the street.
He had no music, he was waltzing to his heartbeat.
He doesn't know you like I do, but he knows how I feel.

I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me smile
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me high
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it heals me

I saw a girl lying in the park
She was staring up at wonder at the stars.
She doesn't know you like I do, but she knows how I feel.

I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me smile
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me high
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it heals me

This is a song for you, my favourite one.
It doesn't say alot, but I'd be very happy to tell you when I'm done...

That I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me smile
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me high
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it makes me high
I love you, I know that I don't have to but it heals me
it heals me
it heals me
it heals me
