"Carolina Out of Your Mind"

Jazz, blues and rock may be the basic descriptive hats worn by Carolina Jazmine members Seth Jones (vocals, piano, organ, bass, accordion), Doug Ornas (drums, piano), Geoffrey Wittine (brass, drums) and Jake Hegedus (guitar, bass), but these cats have a lot more happening beneath the surface.

Or so the quartet hopes is evident on its new EP due out later this year. "We all grew up listening to Zeppelin and Floyd, and I brought in a lot of the jazz sound," said Jones, 20, a Parma resident. "It's a really big culmination. I would have never imagined a year and a half ago that this is what we'd be doing. It's a lot of fun. We hope the new EP shows a little bit more of where we're going. It's more of a mature sound compared to our first album, which is lot more raw. We definitely have an indie-rock feel."

With a Beirut-meets-the National sound, the foursome has booked a free show at 9 p.m. Friday at the Wonder Bar, 2044 East Fourth St., Cleveland. Call 216-298-4050. - John Benson

Bio

In a town where hip hop and metal rule the waves, the Jazmine Trio brings soul to an area ripe for a new sound. Hailing from north east Ohio, this trio of young bloods mix classic rock and blues with a fresh twist of jazz and indie rock. The band pays homages to past greats like Pink Floyd, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin along with modern Indie artists like The Black Keys, The Walkmen, and The National, all the while making the sound completely their own. Don't let their ages fool you. Talent runs deep among these twenty some year old, multi instrumentalists, and they especially prove it on stage, where the band really shines. The leading keys are accompanied by, jamming baselines, reactive drumming, and guitar riffs that are used sparingly but with purpose. Jazmines unique sound comes from a background as diverse as the members that make it up.

The poetic vocals of singer/songwriter Seth Jones (keys, bass) bursts onto the scene in full force whenever the music allows, in a style that's hard to pinpoint, but can be compared with the likes of Ray Lamontage and Jim Morrisson. Doug Ornas (keys, drums) was originally with the Cleveland area metal group "Set Free Among the Dead Themselves" and interprets his technical drumming for the jazz/blues world. Bringing to the table his classic rock tendencies, mixed with a unique style and a tone he's made completely his own is Jake Hegedus (Guitar, Bass).
During a time where the roots of jazz, blues, and rock seem forgotten, the Jazmine Trio gives a refreshing look at the old mixed with the new.
