"Canadian Hip Hop Artist J. Dohe, Talks Album Releases, Collaborations & Upcoming Projects"

MJ: Joining MJ tonight from Canada is Hip Hop artist J. Dohe. I want to thank you for taking time out to chop it for Lyrically Fit!

J. Dohe: No Worries, I’m happy to do it and appreciate you.

MJ: Take this time to introduce yourself to the world of Hip Hop. Take us through your journey to become an artist.

J. Dohe: My name is Jesse Doherty, I go by J. Dohe. I’m a rapper/songwriter/entertainer from Vancouver B.C. Canada. I first started writing and recording almost eight years ago in a basement studio with some friends. Going through the process of creating music and writing over several years, it has brought me to where I am now. Which is releasing solo and joint projects to the world.

MJ: You have a couple of albums out. First talk about “Lounge Chair.” Talk about the production of that album. The beats, and the fresh flow sets a trans for fans!

J. Dohe: “The Lounge Chair” was fully produced by Vancouver Beatmaker EN. It was recorded and mixed by Stroker Deluca, and mastered by The Stuntman. Album art is by Nate Butcher…I wanted to put together a conceptual project that would have a consistent feel from front to back and allow the listener to have a glimpse of my life and the way I see it things. I felt like I captured that with the album.

MJ: I agree, you definitely did that! Now let’s talk about your album “Colour Television.” What can fans expect and anticipate from that album? Talk about how you have evolved as an artist with this album.

J. Dohe: Thank you! I released my “Colour Television” EP in April of this year. It was a completely different vibe and direction from the “Lounge Chair.” Surrey B.C. producer Van$ity Beat$ did all of the beats for the EP and provided a down tempo soundscape for the project. I found that this project was more emotionally driven than the previous and was considerably darker. Van$ity’s production allowed me to break out of my comfort zone and also tackle a few topics that I had on my mind at the time. I always find that you grow most as an artist when you push your boundaries. I was happy with the final product.

MJ: Pushing the envelope as artists say when the come out of their comfort zone! You are out in Canada holding it down in the industry! Talk about any differences you see, if any with hip-hop and fans in Canada and in the US.

J. Dohe: I think that for the most part a Hip Hop fan’s preference depends on their location. That being said, US fans get exposed to more “mainstream” music and artists through the radio down there. Radio stations especially in Vancouver play very little if any Hip Hop so we’re forced to find what’s fresh and new through our avenues…I’m not mad at that though to be honest.

MJ: Share with us who have been some influences growing up and throughout your journey as an artist that keep you motivated.

J. Dohe: I always had music in my house growing up. Classic rock and blues records mostly but that was my introduction into music genre wise. I used to love ACDC, Led Zepplin, Tom Cochrane, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and all of those kind of artists. I would have all of the lyrics memorized and put on shows for my parents. Looking back on it that was a sign that I was meant to do this. Hip-hop wise I was introduced to west coast gangster rap first with Pac, Snoop, Dre, and Cube. That was in like seventh grade, I believe. I love all areas of hip-hop now though. I would sight Talib Kweli, Nas, Rakim, Tech n9ne, and Curren$y as artists that have influenced me in the past but also keep me going and motivated in my current endeavors.

MJ: Let’s talk collaborations now! Who would you like the opportunity to bless the mic and stage with?

J. Dohe: Any of those artists that I just mentioned plus a plethora of others. I’m more concerned about collaborating with artists than sharing the stage with them to be honest. I think that having the chance to sit down in the studio with any artist that has influenced me and being able to share the creative process with them would be the most beneficial. I’ve got the privilege of having legendary underground Boston MC, REKS, on my upcoming LP which I’m stoked about.

MJ: S/O to REKS! Salute! Can you share a little bit on your upcoming LP without giving too much away?

J. Dohe: At the moment I can tell you a few things about it. It’s called “This Time Around” and has production from ENG, Vokab, Stroker Deluca, Adversem and a few more pending. It has features from my boys Northwest Division, Adverse, Neph, REKS, and Billionaire B. The due date for the album will be announced soon. It’s in a totally different direction as my last two projects so be on the lookout for that!

MJ: Any other upcoming projects or performances you are working on that you can share with us?

J. Dohe: Yes!! Me and my non-blood brother Neph are releasing an EP called “The Bar Stool” on October 28th. This is our first collaborative project and it couldn’t have turned out any better. We’re also going on tour in November with Prevail from Swollen Members through Alberta and B.C. for fifteen plus dates. Wonderful things are happening right now!

MJ: S/O to Prevail! Take a minute to share with fans where to go to follow J. Dohe and your music.

J. Dohe: All of my social media/ internet links are streamlined. You can find me on Soundcloud, Facebook, Instagram, and twitter @ itsJdohe.

MJ: As we wrap up is there anything else you would like to share with Lyrically Fit and the world of hip-hop?

J. Dohe: People, and I’m talking to every hip-hop fan worldwide. If you like the music, then support it, get behind it, tell everyone you know how much you dig it. Without the fans and Hip Hop heads that continue to listen to and support the culture of Hip Hop, the artists as a collective cannot survive. Don’t get it twisted, I’m just as much a fan as I am an artist of this culture!

MJ: Well said! Salute, and thank you for your time, and we look forward to the new album dropping soon!

J. Dohe: Thanks MJ!! Much love to you and everyone that’s reading this. Bless!

"J. Dohe – “I’m Only Human” | @itsjdohe |"

Momentum is key as an artist, a rolling stone gathers no moss as they say. That being said, J. Dohe (Canada) is no stranger to this concept. He released 2 projects in the past 8 months and has an EP release in August on the horizon. In the spirit of keeping things moving he is dropping the first installment in a series of singles slotted to fall in place between up coming projects. “I’m Only Human” is the above mentioned piece of music. Honest and engaging lyrics from Dohe combined with smooth production from Eve Key make for a fantastic combination. - Hip Hop Headquarters

"Patience pays off for J. Dohe"

Tsawwassen hip-hop artist Jesse Doherty estimates he'd done easily over 100 songs over the years before really starting to put together his debut album, Lounge Chair.

"You have to be patient. It's a long process but it's worth it in the end," says Doherty, aka J. Dohe.

The 25-year-old recently released the album through Vancouver-based indie label Volunteer Media.

It took time getting to the point where your sound is where you want it, and to where you have a project that is not only to your standards but you feel is quality enough to put your money behind, he explains.

"It has to be important as an artist to be comfortable with the music," he says, adding that if you don't love it yourself, it's very hard to get behind.

Lounge Chair is described as a relaxing, easy listening and comfortable experience. "As I was coming closer and closer to being able to put this project together, I felt like my lifestyle, my kind of attitude was very easygoing, kind of carefree. That translated into this project."

Doherty says his style of hip-hop would be easy to brand as being in the "conscious" genre.

"But, I think it's just honest.

It's honest music. It's not smoke and mirrors. It's just who I am. I'm really just trying to put my life experience, and my musical experience as well, behind the music."

Doherty says he's been listening to hip-hop since he was a young kid and eventually began recording scratch songs at his friend's studio for free.

He realized he was decent and he loved to do it.

"It just progressed from there and here we are now, years later."

He's done about 15 or so shows, mostly in Vancouver, in the past year and is looking to do a Western Canada tour this year.

Doherty also has an EP, Colour Television, he aims to release this month or by early April.

He also hopes to release a full-length project, This Time Around, which is a follow up to Lounge Chair, in the fall. - Delta Optimist

"J. Dohe – Lounge Chair [Album Stream]"

J. Dohe is a rapper from Vancouver who I’ve been able to kick it with on a few occasions through a mutual friend. He’s been heavily active as of late with the release of two albums in 2014 (Lounge Chair and Colour Television) and opening up for a shit load of names you probably heard of in and around the Van City/BC/Van Isle areas.
I wanted to salute the homie for his hard work and put the Spliff Breaks audience onto one of the artists in Vancouver you should keep your eye on in 2015 (with a flow somewhat, yet obvs unintentionally, reminiscent of the homie Jeff Spec). With that being said, stream his Lounge Chair record below and head over to his SoundCloud page for more music by J. Dohe. - Spliff Breaks

Bio

Critically acclaimed Western Canadian rapper / vocalist Jesse Doherty aka J. Dohe is the latest force to be reckoned with. Hailing from the small oceanside town of Tsawwassen, B.C., J. first garnered recognition for his music while rocking house parties with friends during their frequent trips into downtown Vancouver. Soon after making a name for himself as an emcee who could command any crowd he stepped in front of, J. rose to local prominence after releasing his first full length album entitled Lounge Chair (2013).  During the promotion of the album, J. was involved in several Western Canadian tours with the likes of Layzie Bone, Devin The Dude, and People Under The Stairs just to name a few. Since the release of J. Dohe's Lounge Chair LP, he has rocked dozens of hype shows throughout Canada and the US including a performance at the 2014 NXNE Festival in Torono O.N. This past year (2014) he also released his highly anticipated free EP Color Television! Be on the lookout as Dohe is getting ready to release a series of singles and EP's while preparing his next full length project entitled "This Time Around" set to be released in the first quarter of next year.
