Biography

John Natiw is a Michigan songwriter and performer working hard to influence his audiences in a thoughtful, positive and lasting manner. He performs regularly throughout the state at colleges, coffee and tea rooms as well as various folk stages.

Known for his poetic, yet gritty lyrics, percussive guitar style and easy stage presence, his songs confront a variety of topics ranging from fatherly wisdom to thinkin about Nothin All Day, the sensitive subject of teen cutting to reconciliation of estranged loved ones, world peace to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Audiences leave his shows entertained and uplifted, thoughtful and hopeful.

Playing as a solo artist, or with various accompanying musicians, John is poised to reach out with his musical influence beyond the Michigan area with the upcoming release of his first CD.

John is most at home while either writing original material or performing his unique brand of music for audiences small or large. People that come to my shows are there for a reason, John explains. That reason is not me, but the music that somehow touches audience and performer alike and takes us, if only for a few hours, on a trip through the reality and fantasy of this life.

So well go together
Through the deep valleys
Across walls of canyons
That stand in our way

Yes well go together
Looking for Eden
In spite of the demons
That lead us astray

Nothin' All Day

Written By: John Natiw

5am and the rain won't stop
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day
I need to sleep, but on second thought
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day

Newspaper said that the war's still on
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day
I'll just leave it to the Pentagon
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day

I'M GONNA THINK ABOUT NOTHIN' ALL DAY
AND WHILE AWAY SOME TIME
IT DON'T MATTER WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY
I KNOW THE SUN WILL SHINE
TOMORROW I'LL SEE IT IN A DIFFERENT WAY
BUT FOR NOW I'M THINKIN' 'BOUT NOTHIN' TODAY

Bank man said that the money's all gone
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day
Preacher man told me I'm doing wrong
I'm gonna think about nothin' all day

My friends all tell me that I've lost my mind
cause I'm gonna think about nothin' all day
24 hours and I'll be fine
But, I'm gonna think about nothin' all day

[CHORUS]

[BRIDGE]
Please don’t think that I don’t care
But I’m just barely hangin’ on
So much bad news everywhere
The world won’t miss me while I’m gone

[INSTRUMENTAL SOLO AS VERSE]

[CHORUS]

Help Me Be Good

Written By: John Natiw

Verse
He woke up on Sunday and made one last mark on the wall
The last time he lived as a free man, he couldn't recall
Since then it's been nothin' but dodging these big iron doors
Tryin' to stay out of trouble and settlin' scores

They gave him some old clothes and said "don't you ever come back"
The rest of his life and a Bible tucked into a sack
Twenty one years to forget all the things that he'd done
He walked through the front gate his face turned up into the sun... and he said...

Chorus
Help me to be just a little less angry and misunderstood
I don't want to waste my whole life sayin' "you know that I would if I could"
Give me the strength, Lord, to do all the things that I should
I guess what I'm sayin', is help me be good

Verse
The day that they took him away she was too young to know
Why a man that she wanted to stay said he still had to go
In the years that have past pain and anger have come home to live
In the place of a man who just didn't have nothin' to give

She thought to herself more than once "he can go straight to hell"
Then a voice from the front room said "Momma can I get the bell?"
Twenty one long years of thinkin' 'bout what might have been
She turned to her son and said go let your grandaddy in... and she said...

Chorus
Help me to be just a little less angry and misunderstood
I don't want to waste my whole life sayin' "you know that I would if I could"
Give me the strength, Lord, to do all the things that I should
I guess what I'm sayin', is help me be good

[Instrumental Break]

Chorus
Help me to be just a little less angry and misunderstood
I don't want to waste my whole life sayin' "you know that I would if I could"
Give me the strength, Lord, to do all the things that I should
I guess what I'm sayin'... is..

Help me to be just a little less angry and misunderstood
I don't want to waste my whole life sayin' "you know that I would if I could"
Give me the strength, Lord, to do all the things that I should
I guess what I'm sayin'...
All that I'm sayin'...
Please here me sayin'...
Help me be good

One Cut Too Deep

One Cut Too Deep
Lyrics and Music by John Natiw

Fist closed tightly
She braces for the pain
The edge of frustration
Opens virgin skin

Cold steel warms quickly
As blue turns to red
Blade falls gently
Light flickers overhead

She only wanted to hurt
Didn't mean to go this far
Just to feel something worse
Or leave another scar

Moment of emptiness
Grave consequence to keep
Precious soul she flies away
Body goes to sleep

CAN’T UNDO WHAT’S BEEN DONE
AND NOW SHE’S GONE…

Voices of children
Crawl underneath the door
Blood falls like teardrops
Through cracks in the floor

Nothing left to feed on
Demons finally die
Angel at the window
Hides her head to cry

DREAMS FALL TO THE GROUND
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
DREAMS FALL TO THE GROUND
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
ONE CUT TOO DEEP

[BREAK]

Suddenly peaceful
She doesn't feel a thing
No disappointments
Or things that might have been

No explanations
Or farewell notes to find
Reasons are lost now
Forever in her mind

SOON COMES THE DAWN
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
SOON COMES THE DAWN
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
ONE CUT TOO DEEP

CAN’T UNDO WHAT’S BEEN DONE
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
DREAMS FALL TO THE GROUND
AND NOW SHE’S GONE

SOON COMES THE DAWN
AND NOW SHE’S GONE
ONE CUT TOO DEEP

[SPOKEN WORD]

Fist closed tightly
She only wanted to hurt
Moment of emptiness
Voices of children
Nothing left to feed on
Suddenly peaceful

Jesus and John Lennon

Jesus and John Lennon ©
words and music by John Natiw

Nineteen seventy three
on the way to the high school dance
Someone shouted to me
"all I'm sayin' is give peace a chance"

Saw an old man on a bench
his face was all covered in dirt
he smiled at me and looked away
then he stood up and said have you heard...

CHORUS
I saw Jesus and John Lennon spend the day
Hangin' out and talking 'bout that better way

Can you Imagine...

word came through the telephone
a man killed a man with a gun
in a moment the dreamer was gone
but he wasn't the only one

sad man on the radio
said the world has just lost a great light
closed the shades and then my eyes
and drifted off into the night

CHORUS 2
I saw Jesus and John Lennon take a walk
through times square, strawberry fields and central park

Can you Imagine...

BRIDGE
Can you imagine
standing side by side

..Imagine
it's high time that we tried

Can you imagine
a brotherhood of man

...Imagine
please tell me that you can

CHORUS 3
I saw Jesus and John Lennon spend the day
Hangin’ out and talking ‘bout that better way

Can you Imagine...

Can you Imagine?

Pleasureville

Pleasureville - ©2009
words and music by John Natiw

There's a blind man in the graveyard
with a shovel in his hand
Some folks they claim that he's the devil
Others say he's just a man

He runs the still down by the river
and the whorehouse on the hill
And if his whiskey doesn't kill you
His women surely will

Pretty girl sits in the window
She got that sympathetic stare
She'll lead a thirsty man to water
Then leave him drownin' there

Across the street they got a bottle
That can take away the pain
But once you reach the bottom
You may never stand again

In Pleasureville
Stand in Pleasureville

In the road there stands a gambler
Burnin' hundred dollar bills
He says “it ain't about the money
No, it's all about the thrills”

There's a man that looks like Elvis
Sellin' one way tickets out
But those tracks are old and rusted
And the engine's broken down

In Pleasureville
Broke down in Pleasureville

Graveyard man says not to worry
"What you need's a resting place"
Then you start to choke and struggle
As the dirt falls on your face

As the people throw the roses
And the preacher shouts “amen!”
That ole devil moves on to another
Starts it all over again

In Pleasureville
Again in Pleasureville
In Pleasureville
Downtown Pleasureville

There's a blind man in the graveyard
with a shovel in his hand
Some folks they claim that he's the devil...

Antietam Creek

Written By: John Natiw

Antietam Creek

Down this old dirt road the air is cold, and I’ve been known to
Wander on from town to town and all around these hollers and these hills
Wander on these hollers and these hills

I keep to myself, but I can’t help if sometimes I just
Find my way from time to time, back to the line, where all that blood was spilled
Find my way to where my blood was spilled

Antietam Creek it bleeds x 2

It’s been sixty years since all those fears exploded and the
Young men came from miles around, to this ground where everything would change
We all came and everything, it changed

In September ‘62, the grey, the blue collided over
Miller’s handsome field of corn, and lives were torn down in the bloody lane
Our lives were torn down in that bloody lane

Antietam Creek it bleeds x 2

[Instrumental Verse]

With the battle all around, I hit the ground and suddenly
the world went quiet in my mind, I tried to find a place to catch my breath
I couldn’t find a place to catch my breath

Over by a split rail fence, the consequence cut through me
like a bolt of lightning through the sky, and there I died, cut down before my time
There I died, cut down before my time

Antietam Creek it bleeds x 2

Down this old dirt road the air is cold, and I’ve been known to
Wander on from town to town and all around these hollers and these hills
Wander on these hollers and these hills

One-Eyed Bird

One-Eyed Bird
words and music by John Natiw 2/1/11

There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole
There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole
It follows me around wherever I go
There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole

Got a pretty little girl in the back of my mind
Got a pretty little girl in the back of my mind
Left her in a place nobody can find
Got a pretty little girl in the back of my mind

Man in the town says he’s lookin’ for me
Man in the town says he’s lookin’ for me
People ain’t as kind as they used to be
Man in the town says he’s lookin’ for me

In the middle of the night is where the truth comes out
In the middle of the night is where the truth comes out
Everybody gonna see what I’m all about
In the middle of the night is where the truth comes out

In a cold dark hole is where they’ll bury me
In a cold dark hole is where they’ll bury me
At the end of a rope I’ll be set free
In a cold dark hole is where they’ll bury me

There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole
There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole
It follows me around wherever I go
There’s a one-eyed bird on a high line pole
It follows me around wherever I go...

Just For a Change

Just For a Change

One of these days, I’m gonna change
One of these days, I’m gonna change
Try something different
Try something new
Just for a change
Just for a change

Won’t be long now, till I break these chains
Won’t be long now, till I break these chains
There’s nothin’ to stop me
There’s nothin’ to fear
I’ll break these chains
I’ll break these chains

Just like a river that flows to the sea
I’ll be let loose and forever be free
Never the man that I was before
Closing the door on the past and what’s more...
I’ll break these chains
I’ll break these chains

One of these days, I’m gonna change
One of these days, I’m gonna change
There’ll be no surrender
There’ll be no retreat
Cause I’m gonne change
Yeah, I’m gonna change
Just for a change

Don't Look Down When You Go
words and music by John Natiw

Summer rain is in the air
Summer rain is in the air
Autumn nights won't be the same
Summer rain is in the air

Suit of clothes across the bed
Suit of clothes across the bed
A tie the color of a rose
Suit of clothes across the bed

Don't look down when you go
Don't look down when you go
Turn your head back around
Don't look down when you go

There's a hole in the ground
There's a hole in the ground
Everybody knows
There's a hole in the ground

Length of pine out in the field
Length of pine out in the field
Long black cars all in a line
Length of pine out in the field

Don't look down when you go
Don't look down when you go
Turn your head back around
Don't look down when you go

There's a road up in the sky
There's a road up in the sky
Straight ahead and made of gold
There's a road up in the sky

Don't look down when you go
Don't look down when you go
Turn your head back around
Don't look down when you go

Turn your head back around
Don't look down when you go

I Miss You

Written By: John Natiw

Up in the ether where everything's clearer
Mem'ries can either be distant or nearer
Like when we first met, I'll never forget

We walked in the desert, storms they were looming
In spite of the weather a flower was blooming
In radiant blue, like love when it's new

I miss you, oh, how I miss you
In whatever I say or wherever I go
I just want you to know

Deep in the forest we walked on our own
Life laid out before us we couldn't have known
That the end was so near, we had nothing to fear

Out on the ocean the full moon approving
The delicate motion of you and I moving
Together as one, a love just begun

Now I miss you, oh, how I miss you
In whatever I say or wherever I go
I just want you to know

Thinking of life, or at least of its seasons
Trying to decipher the rhyme or the reasons
How it unfolds, and where the time goes

Now I miss you, oh, how I miss you
In whatever I say or wherever I go
I just want you to know

I miss you, oh, how I miss you
In whatever I say or wherever I go
I just want you to know

Jezebel

Written By: John natiw

Lately I’m thinkin’ that I should be gone
Maybe El Paso, hell, maybe San Juan
Somewhere that I can forget who I am
Forth Worth or Austin, I don’t give a damn
Jezebel, I don’t give a damn, Jezebel

There’s nothin’ to keep my old boots by your bed
Too many ghosts talkin’ shit in my head
Tellin’ me I should have known from the start
It was a matter of time before you broke my heart
Jezebel, you broke my heart, Jezebel

Now the day that I met you the earth just stood still
Ruby red lipstick and eyes that could kill
The sun, moon and stars they had brought you to me
Babe, you were the girl of my dreams
Jezebel, the girl of my dreams, Jezebel

There’s only so many lies that a strong man can take
He may bend for a time, but watch out when he breaks
I’m sure that you thought you could fool me and win
Maybe some day you’ll think back on what might have been
Jezebel, what might have been, Jezebel

Now the day that I met you the earth just stood still
Ruby red lipstick and eyes that could kill
The sun, moon and stars they had brought you to me
Babe, you were the girl of my dreams
Jezebel, the girl of my dreams, Jezebel

I’m leaving this ring and my key by the door
Like you, they ain’t no good to me anymore
You keep the things that you told me would last
Me, I’ll take Texas and you kiss my ass
Jezebel, you kiss my ass, Jezebel

Now the day that I met you the earth just stood still
Ruby red lipstick and eyes that could kill
The sun, moon and stars they had brought you to me
Babe, you were the girl of my dreams
Jezebel, the girl of my dreams, Jezebel
Jezebel, the girl of my dreams, Jezebel
You broke my heart, Jezebel
