Kandia

After getting our hands on the debut album by the Portuguese band Kandia we hardly believe their story has no more than two years. The EP “Light”, published in October 2008, raised the tip of the veil showing a band with out of the ordinary ideas regarding the mixture of a female voice and rock, opening the appetite for a debut album that didn’t take long to come. Recorded in May 2009, “lnward Beauty | Outward Reflection” immediately reflects an unusual creativity and a healthy urgency by this voice (Nya) and mind (André) to pour everything out of their souls. Diverting in a smart way to what a project headed by a female voice could typically lead to, Kandia has its spine on heavy, alternative and melodic rock, and the powerful voice of Nya delivers the soul needed to express emotions, something which is never achieved by extremely angelic tones. The comparison to Lacuna Coil is not entirely misplaced, especially if we focus on albums such as "Unleashed Memories" or "Comalies", but Kandia seem to already have maturity and personality enough to assert themselves. “lnward Beauty | Outward Reflection” reveals a remarkable balance between two poles: on the one hand the hardness of rock, on the other the melancholic moments and a subtle comforting zone. This balance is also illustrated in the graphic component of everything that surrounds this album and in the excellent production by Daniel Cardoso, making songs such as “lnto Your Hands”, “Hold On To Me” or “YSLE” gain dimensions far beyond the underground stronghold that the band is still confined to. For a short time, I hope! Maybe JP Leppaluoto, lead singer of Charon, featuring in the advance single “Reflections”, will help them to step outside of our borders.

Imagined and created by the minds of Nya Cruz and André, Kandia debuted with “Light”, an EP released in 2008 (including a first version of “Rise” that reappears here) and published earlier this year “Inward Beauty|Outward Reflection”, their first LP. It should be noted that this is a work of exquisite taste and very high level, therefore posing as a serious candidate for album of the year. Stylistically the duo makes an approach to melodic metal (without going too Gothic, which often happens with female-fronted bands), with a high dose of romanticism but, simultaneously, with notable high level guitar density and an adequate dose of groove and slight electronic notes that make the songs more interesting, vibrant and appealing. The guitars have a major performance in harmonic sections, riffs and solos, superiorly placed and perfectly executed. In addition to the six strings, the voice of Nya Cruz, sounding close to Cristina Scabbia, takes a leading role: excellent in the fields of placing, pitch, dynamics and melody. A point out to the excellent duet with J. P. Leppäluoto (of Charon) in the song “Reflections”. Speaking of guests, Pedro Mendes performs the solo in “Paranoia”, Daniel Cardoso plays drums and piano throughout the album and Zé Puto plays tablas on “Waste My Time”, one of the brightest moments (among other sublime ones such as “Paranoia”, “Into Your Hands”, “YSLE” or “Love Me as I Am”) in its Arabic influences. We could quote Lacuna Coil as the main reference, on their best yet phase somewhere around the time “Unleash The Memories” was released, but this holds more intensity, strength and, at times, speed. All of this is achieved due to the excellent production work of both Daniel Cardoso and the band itself at UltraSound Studios, but it's due mostly to the genius level of songwriting and performance of the duo. Mam te jakies dziwne ciagoty do kapel z paniami na wokalu. Patrzac z szerszej perspektywy jest to odruch zdrowy, zerkajac natomiast okiem metalowca - objaw ten moze byc niepokojacy. Wszak wiadomo, kwestie bycia true spelnia chyba tylko Doro itepe...Mam to gdzies - przyznaje, lubie sobie posluchac od czasu do czasu Leaves' Eyes na przyklad. Od niedawna do grona moich ulubionych "kobiecych" kapel dolaczyla i Kandia.

Od dawna nie zostalem tak porwany przez jakis zespól, w którym za mikrofonem stoi dzierlatka. Powiedzmy sobie szczerze, po niedawnym boomie na pseudo-gotyckie granie, w których mroczne damy stekaly i piszczaly zostalo niewiele. Ostatnie wydawnictwo Lacuna Coil przeszlo niemal bez echa, na Evanescence malo kto juz czeka, Epici wole nie komentowac, Nightwish bez Tarji tez z lekka niedomaga o After Forever cisza w eterze... I mozna tak dlugo. Dlatego teraz jest odpowiedni moment na atak na sluchacza, który Kandia wyprowadza bardzo sensownie. Mówiac krótko - muzyka tego portugalskiego duetu porywa szczera energia, która generuje i zachwyca witalnoscia. W niedawnym wywiadzie, który odbylem z tym zespolem, muzycy rzekli, ze bardzo chcieli by "Inward Beauty Outward Reflection" wyszla na wiosne. I ja sie nie dziwie. To po prostu bardzo wiosenna plyta jest. Pelna pozytywnych wibracji i tego "czegos" co kojarzyc sie moze z budzeniem sie swiata do zycia po zimie. Ale ja jak zwykle o wszystkim tylko nie o muzyce...

Gdy wlaczylem "Inward Beauty Outward Reflection" i kiedy intro przeszlo w "Paranoia" sam nie moglem sie nadziwic. Tak soczystego i porywajacego riffu nie slyszalem od dawna! Glowa sama zrywa sie do machania a towarzyszyc jej bedzie nózka tupiaca tak preznie, ze sasiad z dolu zacznie uderzac mlotkiem w rury! Kawalek ten posiada równiez jakies industrialne szmery pod koniec i umiejetnie laczy moc metalu z melodyjnoscia rocka. Jak mawia Skipper z Pingwinów z Madagaskaru: "Lodzio miodzio!". A to dopiero poczatek tej jakze róznorodnej i fasycnujacej plyty. "Hold On To Me" to na przyklad utwór, który pokazuje jak powinien zabrzmiec Evanescence na "The Open Door", swietny, natchniony utwór. "Inwards" na pewno spowoduje u niejednej gotyckiej damy niekontrolowane drzenie lydek. "All I Need To Know" porwie wszystkich kapitalnym refrenem, w którym perkusja bezlitosnie jedzie niczym w jakiejs thrash metalowej kapeli! "Reflections" natomiast powinno zostac mega hitem. Aranze moze na "Inward Beauty Otward Reflection" nie sa skomplikowane, ale Kandia nadrabia ten mankament zdrowa przebojowscia.

Slowem podsumowania - "Inward Beauty Outward Reflection" to plyta swietnie laczaca gotyk, metal, rock z popowym "vibe". To prawdziwy róg obfitosci, w którym kazdy fan takiego grania znajdzie cos dla siebie. Wielbicielowi mocniejszych uderzen przypadnie na pewno do gustu brzmienie - pelne grubo ciosanych gitar. Fanom rocka spodobaja sie melodie, które gleboko zapadaja w pamiec. Kazdy utwór na debiucie Kadnii to potencjalny hit, który powinien leciec w kazdym radiu, ale zadne radio i tak ich nie pusci. Zycze temu duetowi jak najlepiej, bo maja pomysly, potencjal i, co najwazniejsze, przywrócili mi wiare w ten rodzaj muzyki. Jak na debiut to az za duzo.

UN INICIO MEJOR… IMPOSIBLE

Kandia (que significa cegar por medio de luz) es un dueto de Oporto, Portugal, que mezcla el metal progresivo con el gótico y está conformado por Andre y Nya Cruz, en el escenario ya se hacen acompañar por Helder Bernardo, Daniel Silva y Bernardo Lima.

La historia de la banda es muy breve, con tan solo 3 años de haberse formado cuentan con un EP titulado Light, el cual los puso de inmediato en los ojos de la prensa en Europa sobretodo por el sencillo Rise.

Aquí la voz recae en Nya, la cual tiene un timbre similar a Cristina Scabbia de Lacuna Coil pero un poco más rasposa, incluso el sonido de la banda remite a los primeros discos de la banda italiana. Influenciados por bandas como Opeth, Metallica, H.I.M o A Perfect Circle y todo esto queda plasmado de buena forma en Inward Beauty / Outward Reflection es su primer material de larga duración.

El disco consta de 11 rolas más un bonus track (la versión radial de Reflections) y además con una de las portadas más coloridas, muy al estilo manga. El mensaje principal del disco es que todos somos hermosos en nuestra especial forma, y pasea por los sentimientos de ira, amor, lujuria, desilusión, victoria y derrota.

Después de una breve introducción empiezan los guitarras cadenciosas o potentes de “Paranoia”, donde se habla de la necesidad de atención de muchas personas, es una buen Arola, el detalle es que la voz suena por debajo de la música y a veces se pierde lo que canta Nya.

“Into Your Hands” muestra una banda que pareciera tener varios años junta, con riffs metaleros y la voz tomando un sonido entre lo dulce de Cristina Scabbia pero en forma diferente, más ponchada y con ciertas distorsiones. “Hold On To Me” tiene un buen empiezo a piano dando pie a sonidos góticos y letras de reinventarse después de una caída emocional, algo que llama la atención sobre esta y otras letras es la sencillez, nada rebuscadas y que cumplen con su objetivo.

“Inwards” tiene un sonido más obscuro, manejos de voz que van de lo hablan a los melódico, aquí muestra una faceta de rabia y coraje pero a su vez optimismo.

De las mejores del disco ya que inicia de forma acústica y mucho poderío en las voces y algunas partes con distorsiones, tenemos “All I Need To Know” incluso las guitarras toman un giro diferente, más veloces, contundentes. “Reflections” tiene como acierto la colaboración de uno de sus más grandes influencias, JP Leppaluto de la banda finlandesa Charon. Una canción lujuriosa con sentimiento de tristeza, con ritmo gótico, varios momentos de explosión y donde se saca mejor provecho a la voz de Nya.

“Y.S.L.E. (You Should Love Each Other)” básicamente trata sobre la gente que comete una y otra vez el mismo error, en cierta forma convirtiéndose en una perversa adicción. “Love Me As I Am” es la parte melosa del disco, inicio de piano y sintetizadores, donde aparece un solo de mayor duración; una balada que más que sea de amor entre personas es más a un grito desesperado de aceptación y a partir de ese momento el verdadero amor llegará.

“Rise 09” tiene la particularidad de haber pertenecido a su EP Light, pero en una votación por medio de MySpace donde la gente nombraba su favorita para ser reeditada y puesta en este material. Al escucharla te das cuenta del poder que tiene y el porque ganó, con letras que hablan de la parte negativa que lleva uno dentro y guitarras que invitan a agitar las cervicales y la melena de arriba hacia abajo. Por último pero no por eso perdiendo fuerza se encuentra “Waste My Time”, que tiene sentimiento árabe y empieza con una batería tenue y que poco a poco va subiendo tanto de volumen al momento que el ritmo va acelerando, con una temática interesante sobre no dejarse intimidar ni dejar manipular por nadie.

Kandia est un groupe portugais fondé en 2007 par Nya et Andre et qui pratique une musique influencée par le prog et le gothic. On compte donc dans leurs inspirations des groupes comme A Perfect Circle, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd ou encore Charon et H.I.M.

Et tout cela se ressent bien à l'écoute des morceaux, tantôt sombres et bien lourds, tantôt plus planants et mélancoliques... Chaque titre comporte des mélodies accrocheuses et facilement mémorisables ainsi que des refrains assez tubesques et un coté passionné et émotionnel,ce qui pourrait les rapprocher d'un Evanescence (même si musicalement les deux groupes n'ont pas grand chose en commun).

Un des éléments importants de la musique de Kandia réside dans sa jolie chanteuse Nya qui sait se faire tantôt douce et suave, tantôt plus énervée, proposant à travers sa voix une jolie palette d'émotions. Son timbre fait d'ailleurs parfois penser à celui de Lennon Murphy. On notera aussi que la belle est rejointe sur Reflection par le chanteur de Charon, rien que ça !

L'autre élément important, c'est bien sûr la guitare, bien mise en avant, grâce à des riffs modernes et entraînants et à de solis plus techniques.

Enfin, précisons que Kandia est auto-produit... et bien, le résultat est aussi bon que chez d'autres groupes signés, avec un bon son à la fois clair et puissant qui renforce d'autant plus le coté très pro de cet opus !

In November 2007 a new rock band was born. After releasing an EP in 2008, May 2009 saw Kandia enter the recording studio. The result is this, their first full length release, that is influenced by music from A Perfect Circle, Tool, Him and Charon to name just four. Now then, if you like your music extremely melodic but powerful, with doses of metal added to the mix, this album will sure turn your insides out. Kandia in-fact hail from Portugal, and have given us one helluva album that deserves to take on the world and win! Fronted by Nya, 'Inward Beauty, Outward Reflection' sure has taken my breath away. After a brief instrumental intro, the opening salvo of 'Paranoia' and 'Into Your Hands' gives us an idea as to what to expect, as both songs fire their way out of the speakers. Awesome stuff! Hard, heavy, loud and melodic. 'Inwards' is a slower but equally heavy track...great piano intro to this excellent song. There are highlights galore on this album, which even features JP Leppaluoto from the aforementioned Gothic Finnish Band Charon, sharing lead vocals with Nya on the track 'Reflections'. This is one of the best independent releases I have heard in a long time with an amazing production to boot. Without a shadow of a doubt, this band deserves to be big outside of it's native Portugal.
