"Koko's Cabaret"

"Katie and the Carnival (They) have been playing a lot of local gigs this year and getting a lot of buzz as well, and rightly so as within thirty seconds even the most casual listener should realise they have a caliber that sets them apart from a lot of recently put together local bands. The melodies are hypnotic, the quirky, kitsch percussion actually adds to rather than detracting from the music, the indolently drawled lyrics are catchy and Katie’s vocals are truly something else. Up on stage in The Black Box, singing her own songs, with the support of the cast of talented musicians she has put together in the band, the whole thing really works and to great effect."

"Katie and the Carnival"

"Katie and the Carnival combine a whimsical spirit with a deep bluesy sound that is immediately intriguing. The vocals have a jazzy quality that is sultry and undeniably seductive, transporting the listener to a dreamland where anything goes. Katie and the Carnival’s vocals are arguably at their most stunning when sophisticatedly layered on tracks such as “Thumpy Thump” and “Fancy Face.” Delicate yet edgy percussion lends the band a refreshing burst of energy. Yet it is not all light-hearted, fun and games in the world of Katie and the Carnival, their music is edgy, taking us to the dark side both lyrically and musically in tracks like “Hide Your Face.” Tidy arrangements create a unique quality that is charming, charismatic and downright infectious. A search for innovation has taken this band to new and interesting places and it works. Each track has a standout quality unique to itself showing us that Katie and the Carnival’s heads maybe off dreaming somewhere but their feet are firmly buried in the music."

Bio

'Here is the playground of troubled dreams
where only pigs can fly,
and jesters dressed in spiteful robes bake blackbirds in your pie...
as children run in frightened drones
for dread of evil clowns,
don't be feared, release your mind...
The Carnival has come to town...'

Roll up, roll up for a dark concoction of musical pleasures. Carrying a battered suitcase full of upbeat yet melancholy songs intertwined with gutsy and whimsical lyrics, Katie and the Carnival have come to town.

Inspired by love, loss, bitterness, heartache and the dark depths of the imagination Katie and the Carnival tell stories and sing songs that display sensibilities both vulnerable and powerful. With an extensive background in choral music, Katie's songs are harmony driven with touches of the jazz, roots and blues music she grew up on. Add a contemporary twist, a few toy shop instruments and a healthy dollop of theatrics and there you have it!

In their short career the band have shared a stage with the likes of Duke Special, Thomas Truax and Dan Donnelly (of Watercress fame) and have played at Northern Ireland's biggest event in history 'The Tall Ships Festival' where they received an overwhelmingly positive audience reaction. Katie herself has performed with Duke Special on several occasions, most notably a duet for 'The Meteor Music Awards' broadcast on RTE1 earlier in the year.

This band are difficult to define by genre but are visably strong in their convictions to deliver the best musical entertainment they have within them. They take risks, make themselves laugh and make sure that their audiences have as much fun as they do!

With a glint in their eye and a tune on their tongue Katie and her carnival have launched themselves into a musical adventure of preposterous proportions...
