"A girl with a very different guitar..."

Perhaps it was the heat of the sticky, Summer night in Nashville. Perhaps it was the fact that I had been feeling particularly lonely and a bit under the weather that day, but I found my self drawn to the music that would most certainly become a part of my collection for a very long time.

Krista Brock sits in her living room, amidst huge posters of The White Stripes, Hunter S. Thompson’ s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Which reached almost to the ceiling), Inuyasha silk screens, and Guitars hanging on the wall. You get the sense that this is her creative cocoon, in a manner of speaking. She sat on a large, retro couch made of brown tweed with guitar in hand and started explaining her songs to me.

“Dodgy (her break out single) is about the ‘Good, Bad times’ of it all with the man you thought you knew.” she said while shifting her guitar and starting to fiddle with the tuning keys. “Are you ready?” She asked as she pulled the pick back.

What I heard seemed as if it were pouring out of a soul, dispossessed and alone in some distant place inside her being. I don’t really have an accurate way to describe the feeling the song inspires, other than a conflicting melody of polarized emotion. Love and Hate, Faith and Despair…all in the space of a hiccup. I knew at that moment, that this girl and her guitar were going somewhere. I only hoped I could be there see it when she does.

When the song finished, she laid the instrument down and, as if I had imagined the whole thing, asked me if I wanted some Kool-Aid or a Soda. “Whatever, is fine.” I replied. Shortly after, she returned with a glass of neon blue Kool-Aid and sat back down.

“This one is called Swamp Thing” She said. “I have really bad anxiety and it makes me a little paranoid sometimes.” She laughed and sat her Soda down on the coffee table. “Fear as well, there is a lot of that in it too.”
She was right…Howling and full of compounded fear, Swamp Thing was like seeing the world through the eyes of an outcast creature lurking in the shadows. Truly, as someone who has battled Anxiety my whole life, I can say I understand Swamp Thing and connected to it more than many songs I have heard in a long time.

The last song was Firehouse Rules. This one came from a much more personal place, one she refused to delve very deep into. “Firehouse is about…(sigh)…it is about clawing desperately for attention from someone you care about and never getting it. That pretty much sums it up without going in too deep.”

Raw, saturated with disappointment, that can lend vision to it. Heavy and pulsing with emotion and at the same time, splattered with a vibrato like boiling blood. This sorrowful lament sprinkled with melancholy and deceptively upbeat guitar riffs, will become one of her signatures, in my opinion. It bears her mark of haunting melody and vocals with an almost Joplin-like vocal quality at times.

Krista Brock is currently working with Hip Chick Music, masterminding her upcoming album. In collaboration with her Cousin Jonah Brock (The Pleading and Theory In Fall) and local Indie Rock Legend Dr. Gonzo’s Lisa Pearcy-Patton and Greg Cannon, her live shows have begun to bloom like the bleeding, black and white tree that dominates the cover of her Album. - Nashvillerock.net

Bio

Krista Brock is currently based in Nashville, not too far from the depths of Southeast Tennessee that she crawled out of. Back home, there were less venues than signal bars on your cell phone and when she picked up the guitar at 16, gained her experience playing in parks after hours, house parties, and basements. It was not long until Krista and her band at the time were feeling the constant frustration of the lack of opportunities the area provided. Ultimately, they packed their bags, scrapping the country and went a bit rock and roll. Although things didn't pan out exactly how she had planned, the city wore well on her. The band dissolved and Nashville finally met Krista Brock, solo and surged.

At the end of 2007 Krista put out her first solo demo, introducing the public to her dulcet tones with two tracks "Dodgy" and "The Hallows" Both tracks were well received and scored some local and net radio play.

In 2008 she caught the eye of the new Hip Chick Music (HCM), finally joining their initial roster at the beginning of the year. (www.hipchickmusic.com/artists/8)

In 2010 Krista teamed up with Lisa Patton (drums) and Greg Cannon (guitar) from legendary local band Dr. Gonzo to release 5 tracks - recorded, mixed, and mastered by Alexis Rodriguez from Stigmatic.

Currently, Krista is working with a new full band project entitled "Rebel Romance", check back for updated info.
