"Lauren Light Release Timebomb"

"LOCAL TALENT"

A singer since she can remember, Lauren Light began singing professionally after she graduated from North Davidson High School. Inspired by artists like Kelly Clarkson and Jason Mraz, Lauren’s voice has been compared to those of Katy Perry and Fiona Apple, and her music has gained a lot of recognition because her lyrics have been said to capture a sense of reality. “When I write a song, I want to write lyrics people can relate to…. I want them to feel like I am writing their story,” Lauren says. Light, now 21, has performed with many different bands throughout her short career and has toured from her hometown of Lexington to New Mexico. Lauren started her live band in June, 2011. They will be performing at Graffiti’s Bistro Duo in Greensboro this Friday. Lauren was named the Best “Rock Female” for the 2012 Carolina Music Awards. She has released one EP which included three songs on it and will be releasing her new single “Timebomb” on Aug. 7.

"Meet an artist: Lauren Light"

What she does:
I am a singer and a songwriter. I play piano. My band is Lauren Light and sometimes we are called The Lauren Light Band. W e perform every weekend in North Carolina and Virginia. We do a lot of performing in the Triad area. We have four people in the band, including me.
I have always wanted to do music. There was never really a moment where I phased into it. I have just kind of been doing it all my life; it was always there. I did choir in high school and theater. I have always been one of those people that like to be in front of everybody. I love being up front talking on a mike. It’s exhilarating to be playing and watching people and they are enjoying themselves. You feel like you’re doing something right.

Writing songs before she could write
When I was little, before I could write, I used to have my mom write down songs and poems for me. I still have some of them. One of the first songs was a song for church. I was trying to impress my parents and church.
What her songs are about
I am the kind of person who always has a pad of paper with me. I have some songs that are angry songs. I am a very happy person so usually when I have emotions they are more of the upset kind. I write empowering songs. What I write the most of is about other people. I like to watch people. If I wrote about my life it would be kind of boring. Other people’s lives are so interesting. I pick and choose their stories and put myself in their position and write a song from their point of view. I have written about people I know and strangers. Sometimes I will observe people on the street and go home and write something about them. Other times I will write about friends and the situations they are in.
One song I have is called “Get Me Out.” I wrote the song about a friend’s parents who had divorced and I was just so upset about how she was being treated. Everything in her life was falling apart and they didn’t care.
I have the ex-boyfriend songs. I think everyone has those, but really more are about people.
Her ambitions
I mean the ultimate goal would be to be a national recording artist. I want to be more of a touring artist. I want to record a full album. Right now I have three songs out, so I want to have a complete album out. I want to do more shows around the U.S.
I have a wide audience. I think people 18-29 are my biggest audience, but I think I have a wide range.
Describing her sound
I would call it pop rock with a hint of soul. I try to write what comes out, and bubblegum stuff never really comes out. I am most passionate about songs that have a deeper meaning.
A taste of life on the road
Well, it is kind of intimidating, but when I was doing cover groups I got a taste of it. I wasn’t the one up front, but at least I got to go on the road and fly to different places. I hope touring exceeds my expectations. I am sure there will be some days I will be like, “What have I gotten myself into?” I have always wanted to do it, so I am sure it will be worth it.
It was '60s, '70s, '80s bands. We would do a lot of conferences. They were fun.
I learned a lot from that period in my life. I saw mistakes and learned a lot from them. Everything is just shaking out for me now, so it is nice to be able to take things from that time in my life and put them to use in my career. I was in a whole bunch of cover bands raising money for my own band. It’s been a process. - Gotraid

"Light As A Feather"

Lauren Light took a studious approach to her music career, getting a Master’s certificate in Business/Songwriting from Berklee College of Music online while working for a music booking agency. If anything, Light’s background explains the polish in her songwriting. The North Carolinian has a mainstream pop sensibility, on full display in “Stay With Me.” Chugging guitars and layered harmonies break into an airborne chorus. Instant gratification is great, but sometimes a slow burn leaves a greater impression. Like on the fitful “Get Me Out,” where Light channels Fiona Apple for a somber piano waltz. Then there’s the frenzied pop catharsis of “Out Of The Pictures,” a song that’s perfect for an MTV drama. Light is just beginning her career, but the future is already looking bright. - Ourstage

Bio

When you see this bubbly personality and energized smile you would never guess that underneath it all is a voice with such a soulful pop edge. Most compare Lauren Light’s style to a mixture of Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Fiona Apple all stirred together. "When I first heard her work, I was floored at the raw power in her voice, and immediately looked her up. When I listened to all her music, I was not disappointed. Far from it; I was blown away. Lauren has a way of taking the things life has to offer, and crafting songs that encourage and uplift in those trying times. Whether encouraging her listeners to do the right thing in a hard situation, or lifting their spirits during times of despair, Lauren has the gift: The ability to connect and make a difference." -Must Have Music

The North Carolinian has a mainstream pop sensibility…she takes a no nonsense approach to pop music, cranking out cathatic, catchy tracks in the vein of artist Fiona Apple.” -Ourstage
