Biography

The story starts sometime in the mid 1850's when his great-great-great grandfather was attacked by Indians going over a mountain pass in Colorado. He jumped in a river to escape. The story continues through the generations. A little luck and the spirit of adventure passed down making one lifetime seem like many. Lewis Childs has busked the streets of Europe, played in an Irish Folk Music combo, worked as the band leader of the local Brazilian band, Xevi Nova, performed with a high flying acrobatic music and dance ensemble headed by a Brazilian Master of Capoeira, and traveled to Japan with the World Music folk duo "World of Songs." He released his first full-length solo album, “Currents” in 2009. Oh, his great-grandma was a semi-professional whistler.

Thirteen Butterfly

Written By: Lewis Childs

Butterfly I rode when I was 13 found my way to the shores of Mexico
think the devil claimed the young mares soul and for just 5 dollars you could take a chance see how far you could go
She reared up and I kicked her sides and my past was left behind there was nothing but the waves and the hills in the distance the devil must have passed us by I yanked the reigns she didn't pay any mind there were clods of wet sand flying in the wind
I must admit that I was kind of scarred when I saw White Helmets there's some MP's stationed up ahead (Military Men)
Butterfly I rode when I was 13 found myself at the gates of Hades den tried to turn around but she wouldn't go I saw bloodshot eyes and the barrel of a gun Next thing I heard was a warning shell She was a fiery steed all I could do was yell Whooh!
She reared up and I kicked her once again there was no turning back I said we'll see this to the end shots rang out I could feel death creeping in but butterfly had more to give and we made it round the bend in the road
Butterfly I rode when I was 13 found myself at the gates of Hades den
Butterfly was a raging soul she took me to the edge and then she brought me back again
She brought me back

Life is a River

Written By: Lewis Childs

Sunny Jim found me down by the waterside my body was taken by the cold
Sang like a mockingbird, a style sweet and low thought of the good times forgotten long ago
He sat down looked me in the eyes, smile crept up from my toes
He taught me an old song, spoke to my soul, something from way back to get us down the road

Life is a river that is rollin’ on down to the sea
You can try and swim upstream, might as well float with me

As we sang that sweet little tune, my troubles we’re lifted like a stone
Had a skip in my step, felt the rhythm in my bones
As we made our way down to Shady Grove
Now in the grove people get together, sing neath that rising sun
Jim brought his song from the waterside the people began to sing along

Life is a river that is rollin’ on down to the sea.
You can try and swim upstream, might as well float with me.

Raised my head, took a look around only to find Sunny Jim was gone Shady Grove an elusive dream, you know I tried to trace the scene
As I woke up, soul began to sing
Life! I have left this sweet little tune, the images my friends in the grove
Maybe days before you know, you’ll be hummin’ soft and low
Sunny Jim’s soul lives on in river song

Life is a river that is rollin’ on down to the sea
You can try and swim upstream, might as well float with me
We were all singin’ Life is a river that is rollin’ on down to the sea
You can try and swim upstream, might as well float with me

Tumultuous Affair

Written By: Lewis Childs

In the midst of your blue green swirlin’ waves
Found ways to let go of myself,
Everything tumblin’ so slowly,
Reflections of faces that move me
The dark and unknown.

I can hear your low speech
Warning of the dangers approaching
Ticklin’ my knees, the way I feel,
Heart pounding beats, shakin’ beach,
Should I go on or must I retreat, and I know you have been there
So close to the edge that it feels just like flyin’ and I‘ll hold you
When I’m far from here, we’ll embrace in the tides and we’ll melt into one
You have shown me, now you’ll leave me.
I could stay with you, you know I’d be without a home,
So you’ll free me, the air I’ll breathe,
There is no place like the tumult and we can’t go on anymore

Be

Written By: Lewis Childs

I want to be a shape-shifter rest of my life
I want to be a shape-shifter put an end to this strife
Know people of this world see the pain in their eyes
I want to bring that teardrop bucket
You know I want to hold them while they cry

I want to be a pain reliever rest of my days
I want to be a pain reliever
Find a way out of these old and rusty chains
Know people of this world
I feel the weight of the load that they bear
Want to lift that burden from their backs and watch them
Raise their arms in the air

You know I look up to Harriet, Yoda, Dr. Martin Luther King
Benazir Bhutto, Jesus and the bearer of the ring
The big G of course and Mestre Bimba who reinvented the game
And then there was that guy with the big belly
What was his name?

Want to always remember for the rest of my life
Want to always remember that this wheel keeps on spinnin’ round
Feel it churnin’ deep inside now check it!
Everybody needs to make money
Everybody needs to make dough
If you don’t have a penny
Please don’t go
Everybody needs a good friend
In good times or when it gets so cold
Everybody needs somebody to love

I want to be a…
I want to be a….
I want to be a…..
I want to be

Tumblin Down'

Written By: Lewis Childs

Verse: When Jericho’s walls came down
People put their voices together in a shout
Joshua’s name was heard all around
The tribes of 12 men gathered the ground

Chorus: Tumblin’ tumblin’ tumblin’ down
We don’t need those walls anyhow (2x)
We can bring em’ down

When shrines walls were blown to the ground
Words of, “No surrender! called to the crowd
To die for the cause brave immortals found
Tears are still falling shouting vengeance resounds

Chorus:
We can bring em’ down

When Berlin’s wall came to the ground
“Ode to Joy became “Freedom
Bernstein, Waters, Wall, Fade to Black
Know freedom the fools and the clowns
Those who put their lives on the line hear their souls crying, “Now!

Chorus:

Bridge: When I wrote these lines there was heartache
Had to find my way on the open road
When I met you we sang the song about the walls
We watched them tumble, tumble to the ground

Chorus:
We are rising, “STAND UP!
I believe in love

For You

Written By: Lewis Childs

Verse: I write this for you my friend with the hope that I might surrender
Some of these feelings that keep me from getting to you
We passed the night away, in a foreign room
The conversation comes around
Yeah, I’m left feeling like the dream is through
It’s like being on parade, when you reach the end
There’s a cardboard cut-out waiting there to greet you
What we had was true, you know I’d like to get it back again
Silence is a dangerous edge, when someone else is speaking for…

Chorus: You took me without even knowing
Now I am free to find my own and you know I will get there

Verse: I hear you’ve been blue, I want to see you shining in the tumult
We share the struggle, we just saw things from a different point of view
The times we shared
The pressure begins, we feel the weight upon our shoulders
The time is now to make our dreams come true
I want to hear what’s inside of…

Chorus: You took me without even knowing
Now we are free to find our own and I know we will get there

Bridge: Reach for horizons let go of what’s troubling you
Make it a mountain I think you know just what to do
Every step intention we will see
I want to see
I want to see us breaking I want to see us breaking I want to see us breaking down the walls that keep us from the truth (repeat)

I write this for you my friend
I write this for you (repeat)

The Source

Written By: Lewis Childs

Refrain: When the feelin’ is right you don’t have to open your mouth wide
You can tell her everything with your eyes
Currents of our minds slip silently entwined stream of golden light
Endless ebb and flow of the tides feelin’ mellow
We could be taken by the waves tonight
Keep a lookout for the source and let me know what you find
Along the way, there is so much more to this world than meets the eye

Sun it came pourin’ through my window, in the month of May
Now those clouds just keep rollin’ in
There doesn’t seem to be an end
Ways you move me
You caught me by surprise, when everything was turned upon its side
We caught a glance of each other in a different light
There was somethin’ in the air
Now things they don’t seem so clear
What do we really have to fear?

Refrain:
You know I can start to believe in a little magic
Remember when we stepped outside
Into the calmness, that fading night
We were filled with the hope of a new inspiration
Now the past is not too far-gone
Still we have to find a way to keep movin’ on
You know I’d like to linger in this world a little bit longer
Just a little bit longer

Refrain:
Let me know, well I’ll ask you what you know
Let me know, let me know what you find

Theo and Liam

Written By: Lewis Childs

Theo and Liam

A British soldier is coming back home
To a town that mourns by the sea
His story is told, his bravery is known
There’s a black car and a flag waving free
A man and his dog they were searching for bombs
When the soldier was taken from the queen
The dog made it home but he felt so alone
And his poor heart couldn’t stand the pain
Without Liam in his life the dog Theo
He just slipped away

A man and his dog they were given the job
Of keeping the danger away
And Theo would run around all the guns
As if it were all just a game
But Liam held back, he knew the attack
Would find Theo and the soldiers one day
He’d seen it before they’d settle the score
With a bullet from a Russian AK
Young Liam he looked up at Theo
He just slipped away

The people are gathered by the side of the road
A soldier has fallen once more
They’ll fire off the guns and when it’s all done
She’ll cry for the one she adored
She’ll take up the ashes of his loyal best friend
And they’ll swirl all around her in the wind
She can see them together
Their love for each other
Was kind from which legends are made
Oh Theo he went to find Liam,
They just slipped away
Oh Theo he went to find Liam
They just slipped away

Ballad of Rosalie

Written By: Lewis Childs

The Ballad of Rosalie

There is a man who lies in the jailhouse
In a Mexican border town with an infamous claim
He is the son of an East German refugee
His mother was named Rosalie

They met downtown he was drinking she was working the bar
There was nothing the two hadn’t seen
They heard the scream of a woman who had left her young man
Together they decided to flee

They made a life in a shack on the outskirts of town
The past would come to haunt their dreams
They had a boy who bore the mark of the refugee
His eyes were just like Rosalie’s

There is a man who lies in the jailhouse
In a Mexican border town with an infamous claim
He is the son of an East German refugee
His mother was named Rosalie

Early one cold November morning
Fed by a hunger that would drive him insane
He packed a bag and he headed for the pastures of green
It was the last time the father was seen

The boy and his mother they would get by picking trash from the heap
In the evening she would sing him to sleep
He heard the moans and the groans of many strange men
In the morning she would buy him a treat

There is a man who lies in the jailhouse
In a Mexican border town with an infamous claim
He is the son of an East German refugee
His mother was named Rosalie

The boy grew up fast he got a quick shot at the fortune and fame
He was a runner in a dangerous game
He shot a man down who played rough with poor Rosalie
Who was the brother of the chief of police

There is a man who lies in the jailhouse
In a Mexican border town with an infamous claim
He is the son of an East German refugee
His mother was named Rosalie

Thank You (for doing the dishes)

Written By: Lewis Childs

We started out at the song soiree where the people been coming from miles around to play, it’s a full house of love on a Saturday night, if it happens on a Wednesday music’s going all night.
It was late in the evening I was itching to play I had my guitar ready going up to the stage, saw two more boys throw their hat in the ring one said, “Ro! Cham! Beau! winner gonna get to sing!”
So many people you couldn’t open the door. You had to do the lap dance to get a spot on the floor, surfing the crowd make my way to the kitchen where people all are grooving to the guy who called scissors…
Now all the people are grooving I got to pick up my game, you know I planned to do a ballad on the human race, now I’m searching for a song, have the people sing along so I break out the bottle it goes pop! Let the music play.
So I’m thinking and drinking, all the people are moving, a vibe so lovin, I say, “Whoa look at that girl she got it going on, swaying ever so slowly she’s moving side to side, She’s got her elbows in the suds with the dishes piled high, she’s slinging them dishes like they’re going out of style when we go to the break all the people sing,
I want to thank you for doing the dishes, I want to thank you for sweeping the floor

This second verse is dedicated to anyone who’s been alone at the party and your eves begin to wander you’re searching for something to do, so you head for the kitchen past the couple making out in the doorway, see the people in the kitchen they’re just starting to get in the groove.
All the dishes piled high it’s a welcome sight, put your hands in the water start to feel all right, hips are swaying in time people laughing behind, someone picks up the broom it’s a cleaning revolution.
So we’re sweeping and scrubbing, splishing and splashing, we’re scrubbing and rubbing, we even do the down and dirty you know we’re cleaning the oven. Well the hostess walks in she’s got some sweet hot muffins or some fresh raw pie however do you want it! Now we’re slinging them dishes like they’re going out to slyle and we head for the break all the people sing
I want to thank you for doing the dishes, I want to thank you for sweeping the floor

Yeah we started out at the song soiree where the people been coming from miles around to play, it’s a full house of love on a Saturday night, if it happens on a Wednesday music’s going all night. The people who listen they give us courage to sing it’s a beautiful thing a beautiful thing and when it all comes down I’ll remember the night when the people would sing the people would sing…
I want to thank you for doing the dishes, I want to thank you for sweeping the floor
