"UF Alumna Margeaux Jordan Makes Music Her Own Way"

It’s always great to hear about our fellow Gainesvillians going places, which is why I’m so excited about Margeaux Jordan’s new album. This former UF Dazzler is taking on a new challenge with the release of her new pop-inspired material. One song from the album has already been released and two more are following shortly.

Jordan graduated from UF in May of 2013 and started her career in the girl group the Velvet Angels. The band was signed by Mercury Island/ Def Jam, but Margeaux recently chose to become a solo artist and produce her music independently.

When I spoke with her, I asked her what prompted such a difficult decision.

“Being signed to Island/Def Jam was an amazing learning experience,” she said. “Essentially, they were well-connected investors with an unbelievable rolodex. Working with producers like Rodney Jerkins, JR Rotem and Tricky and The Dream was a quick phone call away.”

“However, in a girl group so young, we didn’t have much creative control. We were afraid to ask for it, really,” she said. “As an independent artist, I’m in control of my direction. I’m producing music and singing lyrics that came from my heart and that I believe in. However, making it to the caliber I envision takes a substantial amount of funding and connections. Biggest thing is, I believe in myself, I know where my heart is, and the reason I’m doing it is to make people happy as well as myself. I’ll let my music and performance do the talking.”

When asked about the challenges of this bold decision, Jordan said the production of her EP and album was “an incredible learning experience.”

“I’ve been able to use my knowledge from Def Jam and UF, as well as my work experience in PR firms and video production companies to put together my entire package.”

“Reality is, in order to pursue music, on top of the creative talent and work ethic, you need flexibility and money. Shortly after I graduated I started Geaux Getter, a public relations company, so I could make my own schedule and work anywhere with Internet connection. I did everything: from build my website and create marketing materials, to video editing and producing all of my music videos, like sets and costumes to casting and beyond. On top of all that, I write my lyrics and melodies, and need to rehearse and keep creating.”

Margeaux’s musical style is mainstream in the best sense of the word. It embodies many of the conventions of modern pop/dance music, while making a valuable contribution to the pop genre. She incorporates many different styles, though her main sound is “pop/dance music with catchy melodies, meaningful lyrics… and music that incorporates a merge of raw instruments and synthetic sounds.”

Jordan is the perfect ambassador for the kind of catchy music that is ideal for clubs and workouts.

Her debut single, “Let Love In,” is an upbeat pop/dance track with a positive message. After about 20 seconds of the song, I found myself tapping my foot and shaking my head in front of my computer screen. The lyrics are direct and approachable, and send a strong message about opening yourself up to love again, an ageless theme of pop music. In it, she showcases her powerful voice and her talent for song writing in this dynamic single.

I also had the privilege of previewing two more tracks from the album, “Girls Night Out” and “Rather Be Dreaming.”

“Girls Night Out” is the ideal song to dance to when getting ready with your girls for a night of Midtown fun. The song is light-hearted and fun with a dance beat, killer vocals and entertaining lyrics that every girl can relate to. The song is purely feel-good, while maintaining a catchy tune. The melody is interspersed with speech, which keeps the track engaging. This track demonstrates that Jordan is capable of both serious and more carefree songs, an important quality in the pop genre.

“Rather Be Dreaming” is more soulful and slower than “Girls Night Out.” In it, Jordan demonstrates her capacity for a wide range of emotions, while maintaining dance vibes and a forward-moving beat. The song talks about the false expectations of relationships, and how it’s easy to imagine yourself in a fairy tale, even when the reality isn’t always ideal.

The lyrics are relatable, and the general minor tonality of the song helps to emphasize the regret and longing expressed in the powerful vocals. This song showcases Margeaux’s tasteful vibrato, which is not overbearing, but adds expression and color to her music.

Aside from finishing her album, Jordan is working on music videos. She has also covered various songs, which are featured on YouTube, such as “Stay with Me” by Sam Smith and “Titanium” by David Guetta, featuring Sia Furler.

As if she didn’t already have enough on her plate, Jordan is also working on a film called “Booted” in which she plays a leading role.

You can learn more about her by checking her out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Keep an eye out for this songbird in 2015. - Gainesville Scene

"Coral Springs Singer and PR Gal Margeaux Jordan says she was "put on this planet to entertain""

Pop singer Margeaux Jordan is only 24, but the Coral Springs resident has already worked with L.A. Reid as part of girl group Velvet Angels, acted in a few TV and movie roles, and been a backup dancer for Pitbull and Thalia, among others.

Jordan's successes so far haven't only come from being onstage, behind the mic, or in front of the camera: she's a also a business woman on the rise. Last year, she created Geaux Getter, her own public relations and social media management company. Though working on this new entrepreneurial venture, she's still making music.

We interviewed the young singer about covering Sam Smith, life after working with major labels, and her new PR career.

New Times: You worked with L.A. Reid when you were only 16, and you're only 24, what's it like being so young in the music industry?

Margeaux Jordan: I love being able to bring fresh talent to the forefront. I've got a lot of energy, drive and creativity inside that I am so eager to share to the world. It's been an incredible journey.

By 16, I was signed to one of the world's most powerful record labels, Mercury/Island Def Jam Records, under L.A. Reid and David Massey. I performed for and worked alongside industry giants including Tricky and The Dream, Rodney Jerkins, J.R. Rotem, Lindy Robbins, Neyo, and so many more. I had to mature fast, continuing my education virtually, while living nearly 3,000 miles away from home in Los Angeles.

I have to say though, life after the "label" has been inspiring. I feel more ready than ever to showcase my love for pure, powerhouse entertainment to the world. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Public Relations and minor in Theatre. I perfected my sound... I discovered what elements of music make me tick, and developed a style of music that I know is going to bring a smile to people's faces, get their bones moving and their hearts happy.

I know I was put on this planet to entertain. Not just stand in one place and sing, but to perform, to put on a real show. A whole production! I want people to feel how they felt anticipating NSYNC & Britney Spears "Baby one More Time" performance at the MTV VMAs, or bring back those awesome Pepsi commercials in the early 2000s.

Fans are craving to be captivated visually and sonically and be left feeling refreshed and uplifted. I want to give people chills. Most important, I want to be a role model, especially for girls and young women. I've been through so much, and feel I can really help others to stay true to themselves, love themselves and believe that their dreams can be reality.

We need more positive influences in this world... Taylor Swift is a great example. She's a class act, and genuine person, and she really cares about her fans!

Can you tell us about Geaux Getter, why you started it and where it's going?

Geaux Getter is a public relations and social media management company I started about a year ago. While my passion is in entertainment, I love the world of business, video editing, and communications.

I founded Geaux Getter because I needed to have a consistent job where I had flexibility, so I could really pursue my dreams in entertainment. The entertainment industry is so unpredictable. From last minute casting calls, to crazy rehearsal and filming schedules and my late-night recording sessions, which mom and dad are never too fond of (laughs), I really needed that flexibility.

I was awarded the Florida Public Relations Association Award from my UF dean and professors, and had quite a bit of work experience in public relations. I love making real connections with people and developing a meaningful brand... I intend to continue to be super hands on in my entertainment to apply this knowledge and not be controlled like a puppet on a string.

You did a cover of Sam Smith's "Stay with Me." Besides Sam Smith, who else do you like to listen to?

Who do I not listen to? Sam is incredible. My music taste is all over the place... But I love diversity in music and apply that to my sounds. I'm a huge fan of Michael Jackson, his music has transcended the decades, but most importantly, he's a true performer. I love Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Pink -- their voices and ad libs give you goosebumps. They have incredible vocal control. Clean Bandit, OneRepublic, Black Violin, and Avicii are innovators. I could listen to Rod Stewart, Elton John, the Beatles, Queen and Def Leopard all day long.

What is your favorite part of living in South Florida?

South Florida weather is beautiful all year round. I don't mind the heat! The beaches are beautiful, and I'm close to both Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. There is so much to do here. It's also a melting pot of cultures, so it's cool to have so much diversity in friends, restaurants and events.

Plus, most of my family from both my mom's and dad's sides are within a 20-mile radius, so I really had an awesome childhood growing up with them in my life. I love my family so, so much. They have been extremely supportive of my career. They will wake up at 4 a.m., when I get back from the studio just to hear a rough mix of what I just finished recording.

When are you playing a show down here?

I have been focused on building my team and electronic press kit (EPK), so I don't currently have any shows lined up just yet. I just finished mastering three original songs. The feedback from various producers and music industry professionals is that these are radio-ready. Shortly after releasing my "Stay With Me" video, I got another opportunity to create a music video to one of my original songs, "Rather Be Dreaming." We're filming the second week of December, so it should be out at the start of the New Year.

Can you tell us about why kind of music you're trying to make?

My music fuses my pure voice with mainstream pop dance and throwback sounds. I incorporate real instruments, often times with a progressive "heart throbbing" beat. You can't help but move to it!

My music always has a gradual build and a big drop, very EDM style, but the music incorporates more than just the synthetic sounds. I never throw out the lyrics. My lyrics always tell a story and pull from real experiences and emotions in my life. They bring you on a journey metaphorically and physically.

I make my music so that people can relate to it. I want people to feel like the song was written for them, for their situation, which it was! No matter what, every chorus is a feel-good chorus. It's uplifting, it gives hope, love, happiness. I am a very positive-thinker, glass is half-full type.

"Exclusive Interview with Margeaux Jordan - formally signed by Island Def Jam"

Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?

Margeaux Jordan: I was browsing Twitter and noticed that one of my friends in the music industry followed you guys. It's nice to know your site exists with the sole mission of providing real-world exposure for unsigned artists! I used to be signed to Mercury/Island Def Jam with a girl group… and now that I'm ready to launch my career as a solo artist. I thought Exposed Vocals would be an awesome platform to connect with! :)

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

Margeaux Jordan: I'm from the Sunshine State, in the melting pot we call South Florida. It's filled with such diversity, and so many creative outlets. I've always been a performer. I started dancing when I was three years old, and would always put on plays for my relatives when they came over for dinner.

It wasn't until fifth grade that I discovered my love for singing and hip hop! I'd competed in regional and national dance competitions in all subjects from ballet to contemporary… but pop music always had me moving. Then, my music teacher heard me singing a few scales and encouraged me to try out for 'The Sound of Music.' Petrified, I auditioned… and landed the part of Maria!

From there it was kind of a domino effect. I went on to join this amazing travel performance company based out of Miami, in which I was discovered two times, and asked to be part of girl groups for a small label out of Atlantic Records, then eventually landing a contract with Mercury/Island Def Jam with second girl group Velvet Angels.

Three incredible years later, and having worked with L.A. Reid, David Massey, and some of the best producers including Rodney Jerkins, J.R. Rotem, Lindy Robbins, Cutfather and J.J., Brian Kennedy and more, the group unfortunately lost momentum and various reasons caused it to come to an end. But that didn't stop me! I went on to finish my education at the University of Florida and continued perfecting my craft and sound. And now, I'm ready to launch :)!

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Margeaux Jordan: I go by Margeaux Jordan… :) That is my birth name after all! It's also the same initials as one of my biggest inspirations, Michael Jackson!

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

Margeaux Jordan: Share the love… LEGALLY! Music is so beautiful and universal, it SHOULD be shared. There are so many fabulous platforms including radio, Spotify, YouTube, 8Tracks, Pandora, SoundCloud, iTunes Radio, Exposed Vocals, you name it, where you can share your music… or 'stream' it, really.

At this point, my music is up for download on iTunes, CDBaby, and Amazon. But, I often do promotions where I'll give away my tracks for free for excited fans! What's important to me is getting my music to people who want to feel something… be moved, or inspired, and DANCE.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Margeaux Jordan: Be EVERYWHERE! I'm on Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, YouTube, ReverbNation, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest…literally all over the place. It's a LOT of maintenance, but it's fun! Don't be bashful about promoting yourself at first. I was weirded out at first posting so many things about myself. But ultimately, the fans and those who follow you WANT to see what you're doing. They WANT to support you and help you GROW and make your dreams come to life!

Margeaux Jordan: It's also important to network, put yourself out there. Make those phone calls, and practice every day. I work on my live performance every day. Because I'm a dancer, it takes a lot of work to sing and dance simultaneously. Holy cardio! But prepare yourself and constantly improve. Someone will notice :)

Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

Margeaux Jordan: Heck yeah! I remember one time I was performing at BB Kings in Los Angeles at the Universal City Walk. It's located indoors… and I went out to perform at noon. Want to know the first thing I said? "Hey!!!! How's everybody doing TONIGHT!" …. and people didn't even have lunch yet.

It happens. I'm also a perfectionist and can't stand when I'm off pitch. But it's tough to move a lot and stay on ALL the time! Can't worry about it though… I'm all about putting on a GREAT show, and a visually appealing live performance. People can sense a lack of confidence. So roll with the punches, have fun, and they'll have fun with you. Anyone who complains… let them! You're still doing what you love!

Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?

Margeaux Jordan: Not yet! I'm still working on my EP! I've got three original songs mixed and mastered… then I plan to do a road trip/radio tour across the U.S. in March. I'm pumped! It's going to be outrageously fun, exhausting and inspiring. I've got to get my original music out.

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

Margeaux Jordan: I pull from all of my life experiences. From relationships, to successes and failures, to just fun experiences. Every single song I write ALWAYS has an uplifting, 'I can' type of chorus. I'm always writing poetry, and jotting down concepts. I often wake up in the middle of the night from a dream and I'll roll on my side, plug the idea into my phone and go back to bed. Songwriting is one of my favorite things to do… there are so many elements.

This is the typical order… I'm constantly writing poetry, which is the foundation of my lyrics. Then, producers often send me tracks to work with. As soon as I hear the track, melodies start flying out of my mouth. I'll put on my iPhone recorder and play the beat, recording myself humming all kinds of melodies over and over.

Then, once I feel I've exhausted that, I'll listen back and take note of which melodies were catchy or appealing. Next, I'll either write poetry from scratch (depending on the mood of the song), or go into my lyrics/poetry books/files and see what sticks. Slowly, I build the song, and sometimes will ask the producer to adjust the track to match the vocal performance. I'll also sometimes hear different instruments or effects on vocals and ask the producer to make those adjustments as well. It's so fun. Ah, I love it!

Margeaux Jordan: Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

I do! I actually built my own website. Whatcha think? It's www.margeauxjordan.com . I've got links to ALL of my social networks on there. I'm on Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, YouTube, ReverbNation, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, etc. Just Google 'Margeaux Jordan' and you'll find me. :) Thanks Mom and Dad for the interesting first name.

Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?

Margeaux Jordan: Oh good one! I'm actually kind of proud of this, but I have the "Grease" medley… with every "Grease" song mashed together. It's my favorite movie. Honestly, it's also my dream to be in a film like that where I can utilize my singing, acting and dancing skills.

I also have Scatman John's "I'm a Scat Man," haha! My iTunes library has music from Beethoven, to the 60s and 70s, to today. I'm all over the place… all genres. Music is amazing.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

Margeaux Jordan: I'd take my family on a vacation. My parents, especially, work so darn hard, and they need a break. They need to see the world. After allocating a fair amount to memories and travel experiences, I would put some away into savings and stocks & bonds.

I'd also like to help resurrect a school for the arts… a place where young people can come together to create music and learn how to perform. Perhaps an online platform (virtual school) would be more financially viable. :)

Finally, I'd spend money on my music career. I'd love to make more music videos, tour, and grow my fan base. It takes a lot of resources to make it happen! But I'm SO ready for this.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

Margeaux Jordan: Marketing and promotions is my thing! I actually graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Florida in Public Relations. I really put a lot of time and energy into the communications/marketing field. It just takes TIME! I'm on all of the social media channels, and try to produce as much content as possible.

I'm now sending out my Electronic Press Kit to A&R's and other professionals in the industry. Biggest thing is making share-worthy content and putting it out there. It's a gradual process, but I'm enjoying the journey!

Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?

Margeaux Jordan: My ultimate dream would be to perform with Michael Jackson at Red Rock Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. The stage is situated around these incredible red rock formations, nestled under the stars. I love nature, so to have a fairly intimate show of 9,000 under the stars sounds absolutely incredible.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

Margeaux Jordan: Releasing the EP! I'm so eager to publish my music and start touring. I've come up with music video concepts for my next three songs, and production is the works. Look out for some awesome, uplifting dance music and powerhouse performances. It's all going to snowball, I can feel it!

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

Margeaux Jordan: This will never happen. :) I'm always going be doing SOMETHING in arts and entertainment. Acting in film, dancing on stage, directing, screenwriting, I just love this stuff too much.

Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?

Margeaux Jordan: I remember making my mom take me to Walmart to get the Backstreet Boys Millennium CD. It was the first CD I purchased with my own money. Ugh, they were my favorite. I kissed Nick's face on my poster every morning. LOL. In my head I was thinking, "Oh my God, I can't wait to discover what songs AREN'T on the radio," and also being really excited to flip through the booklet on the inside of the CD. I loved reading all the lyrics and seeing the individual photos of the guys. B-S-B!

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

Margeaux Jordan: Gosh, I can't wait for the day that I can put ALL of my energy into entertainment. To make it work in this business though, you need time, flexibility and an income.

A year ago, I founded Geaux Getter - a public relations and social media marketing company. I do everything from build websites and social media pages, to site maintenance, video editing, advertising, press releases, e-blasts, etc. I excelled in this during and after I graduated and it's pretty flexible.

The problem is that I am my own boss, and need to learn when to close the computer and stop working. It's a lot of work maintaining all of these clients from various industries, as well as managing my own entertainment career. Hence, I'm seeking a manager! What's awesome is, I love what I do, so it only inspires me to keep going!

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2015?

Margeaux Jordan: Three things: AMAZING, FUN MUSIC VIDEOS TO MAKE YOU WANT TO DANCE, POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCES, and FRESH NEW POP DANCE MUSIC. Also, my performance on the MTV VMA's :) It's gonna happen! I'd like to bring back those awesome Pepsi ads… although I don't drink much Pepsi. Still. They were amazing. :) - Exposed Vocals

"Pop singer-songwriter Margeaux Jordan brings dreams to life in "Rather Be Dreaming" song & video"

Margeaux Jordan reminds us to believe in romance in her uplifting song and music video, “Rather Be Dreaming,” now available for download on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and all other major music platforms

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Emerging pop singer-songwriter Margeaux Jordan releases her captivating new song and music video, “Rather Be Dreaming,” taking us on a whimsical journey into a modern-day fairy tale dream where romance is brought to life.

Margeaux’s stirring new pop dance single, “Rather Be Dreaming,” is available for download on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Google Play and all other major music platforms.

With emotional lyrics, uplifting melodies, and a progressive beat, “Rather Be Dreaming,” relates to anyone seeking motivation to vacate the mediocrity, and trust that dreams of romance will become reality.

"Rather Be Dreaming" shares the story of a modern-day girl who believes that romance and chivalry still exists. When a romantic date gets ousted for a night of television shows and video games, she confronts her boyfriend, who responds that she is ‘stuck in a dream,’ and ‘seeking a Prince Charming’ that doesn’t exist.

“I’d rather be dreaming, caught in a fairy tale,” she responds, breaking up with her preoccupied boyfriend, staying true to her belief in romance.

“Jordan is the perfect ambassador for the kind of catchy music that is ideal for clubs and workouts,” said Treya Nash, Gainesville Scene music critic.

This relevant record emphasizes the sweet details that often get lost in translation throughout our busy lives.

“Jordan demonstrates her capacity for a wide range of emotions, while maintaining dance vibes and a forward moving beat.” Nash continued. “This song showcases Margeaux’s tasteful vibrato, which is not overbearing, but adds expression and color to her music.”

The music video showcases the pop artist’s dynamic dance moves and talents as a multifaceted entertainer.

“Too often we find ourselves settling for average, fearing that if we set our standards high, it will never happen,” Margeaux said. “Romance isn’t dead in the 21st century, and the, ‘lets hang out,’ text gets old, quick. I truly believe that we will find that special someone who enjoys spicing it up and doing the sweet little things as much we do.”

Margeaux breaks new ground in the dance music genre with her bold lyrics and mixture of both classical and synthetic sounds.
