Dear Maria Elena,
Thanks for submitting your new material for the evaluation. I liked the songs very much. Like last time, I'd like to mention that the majority of artists score in the 2.5 to 3.5 range in the various categories. Whenever an artist sees a 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 3.5 as a score in a certain category (or categories) it means that's an area I feel they need to improve and develop. When an artist sees 4, 4.5 or 5 as their score in a category, it's a validation from a professional, confirming that the songs are of the highest level and show strong potential in the ultra-competitive music industry. To really raise the bar, every artist should work hard to earn a 4.5 or 5 in every category. It's a very competitive business and people averaging in the 3's (or less) will probably not get too far without a great deal of improvement and development. I don't give out 4's and 5's easily, so any of those you see, you have earned. Well done!

Thanks again for the music submission and continued best wishes! Please keep me posted on your career progress. I always enjoy hearing from you. Have a great day!

Best wishes, Gene Foley

"Vents Magazine Interview - Maria Elena Sanchez"

How you got started in the music world?

I got started when I was given a toy piano at the age of 3 and started to play every song I heard by ear. By the age of 8, I was singing at a high soprano voice – I shocked people. Unfortunately, my father was very conservative and did not want me singing as a professional, and there was no such thing as the internet, which has launched so many careers that would have never been noticed or heard before. I studied piano with a private teacher and sang in church and all the school choruses or choirs I could get into in high school. Destiny had other plans – marriage, family, children, health – you name it; it made sure I could not pursue the career I dreamed of all my life. Then, emergency surgery took my high soprano voice and I just gave up. After all these years, I finally decided to do what I love more than any career I could ever think of – write music. It’s never too late!!

What are your music influences?

Born in the 50’s and living through the most incredible decades of music the world has ever heard, my influences range from the best WWII singers and bands, such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, the Andrew Sisters, going forward in time with Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison, ALL the Motown greats (I grew up in New York City). Then came disco – which I learned to dance to, and gave us such greats as Donna Summer and The Bee Gees, of whom we have lost. Then all the incredible “one-hit-wonders” from the 80’s and 90’s until now. Since the year 2000, the new music sound that’s coming in is growing stronger – especially in the Rock genre and Pop. The internet is just pulling in all these beautiful young new talents and to be honest – I envy all of them.

What has been the greatest moment as an artist?

The day my father saw me sing professionally on stage for the first time. He was so overwhelmed and told me he realized that he should not have tried to hold me back.

How would you describe your sound?

WOW! How would YOU describe it? It’s really difficult to compare yourself to anyone, since there are so many great singers and songwriters out there. But not comparing myself to anyone else, I believe my sound is unique and stands on its own. I know there’s no other sound that can be compared to mine because my sound comes from inside my head and heart – no one else can get in there except me. I want it to pull at the listeners’ feelings and life experiences – especially the words. The music is meant to engage the listeners into swooning, moving, crying or even lying (there I go rhyming again).

It’s ME! Can you tell us more about the recording process and the writing for this record?

The name is a play on my name Maria Elena. It encompasses many of the different moods and feelings I have had throughout the years. The whole thing is self-published – I recorded everything at home and found a few tricks that are great in keeping unwanted sounds out of the recordings, without a quiet room, but definitely throwing all the dogs out of the house (I have 7). There are nine songs in this grouping: 1) Turn and Walk Away is about anyone being used and left – married or not; 2) Share My Love is about commitment for all eternity; 3) Run Away is a warning for whoever you are with that they are going to cry; 4) Locked In A Dream was inspired when Pres. Geo. W. Bush went to war in the Middle East – I cried that day for the children; 5) This Is America is dedicated to ALL people who live in the USA for no matter what reason and to the warriors who keep it free; 6) Share My Love is simplified in Piano/Voice only; 7) Años Que Nos Pasan (Years That Are Passing Us) was brought to mind one day while I was thinking about growing old and I wrote it in Spanish; My Collection – Dance Medley was just a need I had that day to just move and played with music I already had and enhanced it; and lastly 9) Run Awa - Vents Magazine

"Maria Elena Sanchez - It's never too late . . ."

Mon, May 21, 2012

It is never too late to release music as it is timeless and this can be said for poet and musician Maria Elena Sanchez. She was born in 1953 and as of April 16 2012, she has finally decided to release her collection of songs. Music is not something that all of sudden popped into her life rather it was more of a hobby as Maria had other life issues to deal with that left no time to pursue music professionally. Her appreciation for all types of music has lead to incorporate so many that it is hard to classify her music but oddly enough it all fits together so well. She tries to incorporate this appreciation into her music and not stick to a formula. Her songs include a mixture of lyrical content and no lyrical content (instrumental). There is something oddly engaging about instrumental music. However, Maria's "My Collection-Dance Medley" is a strong enough song to make any listener still feel a connection. The compelling synthesizer and kick drum will pull you in. The funky style is powerful-a terrific instrumental track indeed. Maria's has the voice of an angel, very warm and inviting. Her lyrics or should I say poetry will leave you feeling as if you're in a theater watching a Shakespeare play. The structure, style, and flow of the lyrics could only be done by such as a talented poet as Maria herself. "Run Away" deals with deeper issue of running away from your issues or a love gone wrong. The meaning behind the song is a mystery and thats what so enticing about the song. We can only be thankful that Maria has finally decided to share her wonderful voice with us.
