Bio

The Marvin Hoffert Quintet specializes in West Coast straight ahead jazz. The band seeks out and plays flowing melodies and complementary counter lines and plays them at pleasant volumes to reveal the inner beauty of the classic jazz literature.

Biography

Marvin Hoffert: Marvin recently wandered out to North Carolina from Seattle, where he had learned to play jazz on his tenor saxophone. His music still has that West Coast accent - kind of laid back and melodic. He claims he will play anything, as long as it is straight ahead jazz, but he tends to turn catatonic if the music gets too loud or too many notes are played. In Seattle he founded and managed the band called Jazz Quintessence. Remnants of that band can still be heard at: www.jazzquintessence.com. He has recorded two CD's, but only one of them has been published.

Joseph Szalacsi: Joseph is newly arrived to North Carolina from New York, trumpet and flugelhorn. He has performed with the legendary be-bop trumpeter Howard McGhee Big Band, Frankie Avalon, Jerry Lewis, Red Buttons, Alisha Kashi, and Bobby Vinton. Before moving here, he was a member of the Nassau County Community College Latin Jazz Band and the Bronx Symphony Orchestra.

Amanda Fox: Amanda is a new vocalist publicly, but has been singing jazz since she was a kid listening to her dad's Nat "King" Cole albums. Her favorite artists include Cole, Carmen McRae, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald. She lives in Durham with her husband, and teaches at a small private school.

Frank Pierre: Our drummer Frank is originally from Queens NY. Growing up in a family of jazz musicians Frank learned to play jazz and swing at an early age. With influences from such greats as Buddy Rich & Steve Gadd, Frank adds a unique mix of percussion to the group. He has also played in various Classic Rock, Funk and Dance bands on Long Island and Raleigh NC .

Art Gruskin: Art is typically shy and understated, so did not send in a bio. However, his solid bass lines are the foundation of our music. He has lived in Hillsboro for many years, so has improved the quality of music for many a local band. He plays many styles of music, but we know that secretly he likes jazz best.

Milton Gore: North Carolina native and third-generation guitar player, Milton has appeared on numerous area stages in a wide variety of bands over the last 25 years. Now fully immersed in the classics of jazz's golden age, he is thrilled to be playing with this ensemble of fine musicians and is having the most fun of his career.
