"Medium Mystic: “Trashy Feast” (Punknews Exclusive)"

Medium Mystic is the new Brooklyn duo of Brenna Ehrlich and Morgan Enos. Their latest tune, "Trashy Feast" is 71 seconds of pure low-fi, scudzy punk. Between the clanging guitar and Brenna's unfiltered vocals, the track walks a zig-zagging line between Riot-Grrrl punk and Bay Area garage rock.

Speaking to Punknews about the song, Brenna said, "We wrote this song after stocking up on Fancy Feast for our cat, Edie. It's kind of silly, but it's also kind of about greed and falsity and consumerism. I suppose it could the theme song for the Trump Grill(e)?" Morgan added, "This is a bratty punk song, recorded nearly instantly. Brenna wrote all the words and sang lead. I played guitar and drummed on a couch through a fuzzbox. Meanwhile, a very audible siren wailed outside. - Punk News

"MEDIUM MYSTIC, “SLEEPWALK GIRL”"

The Brooklyn-based duo Medium Mystic – comprised of Brenna Ehrlich and Morgan Enos – began their collaboration writing songs together despite living on opposite coasts – Morgan in California and Brenna in Brooklyn. Their quirky subject matter included dreams, night terrors, and their mourning of the loss of David Bowie. “Sleepwalk Girl” is about that very topic, and it comes to fruition now that they both reside in Brooklyn.

Loosely based on a time when Brenna felt the presence of a previous resident haunting her, she found herself falling asleep in one bed and waking up in another. In an entirely different room. “This song was inspired by an incident last year in which I sleepwalked — as I sometimes do. I was staying at a house my parents were renting for the weekend and I was certain it was haunted by the patriarch of the family who used to live there. This was confirmed, for me, when I fell asleep in one bed and woke up in another room (which had been used by the family’s children), tucked into a twin bed.”

With raw instrumentals and upbeat vocals, “Sleepwalk Girl” possesses otherworldly elements, and is widely comprised of a very 60’s musical vibe, much like The Animals‘ “It’s My Life”.

“I had a blast helping to write all these spooky power pop tunes in one weird, long burst,” exclaims Morgan. “Brenna’s energy and internal universe, as laid out in her novels and short stories, has a focusing effect on my work. We can’t wait to perform everywhere. Medium Mystic is here to soothe your Trump nightmares.” - Impose

"Medium Mystic cover David Bowie (Punknews Exclusive)"

Yesterday was David Bowie's birthday. Tomorrow is the first anniversary of the Starman's death. What a mix of emotions! To help you work out your feelings, Punknews is pleased to debut a new song by Medium Mystic… and it's a Bowie cover, naturally!

Medium Mystic is the Brooklyn duo of Brenna Ehrlich (that's her as Bowie's Jareth at age 8 in the photo there) and Morgan Enos. In order to pay tribute to the goblin king, they dug deep and recorded a cut of "Bombers." "Bombers" was originally supposed to open side two of Hunky Dory, but for unknown reasons, was cut from the album and released as an obscure promo single. For their take, Medium Mystic take the tune's glam rock roots and rough it up with a little lo-fi punk barbwire.

Medium Mystic is playing Brooklyn on January 30 with Twiga, Early Riser, and La Peche. You can get tickets for that right here. Meanwhile, check out the duo's cover of Bowie's "Bombers" below! - Punk News

Bio

Medium Mystic is Morgan Enos (Other Houses, Hollow Sunshine) and Brenna Ehrlich (Content and Culture at TIDAL and author of PLACID GIRL). They formed a band while Morgan lived in a small town in California and worked in a music store that was haunted by the ghost of the mayor. Brenna lived/lives in Brooklyn and wrote/writes about musicians and ghosthunters.

Together, they wrote thirteen songs -- despite the three-hour time difference -- about boys in glass boxes, disembodied heads, Brenna's sleepwalking habit and dancing ghosts. Now, Morgan lives in Brooklyn, too, and they don't have to practice via FaceTime anymore.

Their influences are Guided by Voices, Nobunny and this one song by Cliff Richards and the Shadows called "The Snake and the Bookworm."
