Biography

Indie singer/songwriters Mia and Jonah have a live show which is “likely to stir audiences from the magical trance induced only by those special performers who create what they live and live what they create.” (Eugene Weekly)

Since they met in Fall, 2003, the have gone on to produce 3 LP's and 1 EP together as well as complete a nation wide tour (Rooms for Adelaide/2008) . Their music has been described as, “visionary” (Nacsent Mag), “timeless” (Tunejar), as well as, "songs of singular beauty"(SF Chronicle).

Mia and Jonah's latest record is a concept album based on ’The Eleven Books of Metamorphosis’, more commonly referred to as ’The Golden Ass’. This book was originally written by Apuleius in 2nd century Rome and is claimed to be the world’s first novel. Apuleius based his story on Greek folktales and framed it as an overall satire of Homer’s Odyssey. Mia and Jonah's version of The Golden Ass, although inspired by Apuleius’ work, is not quite an adaptation. They have more or less crafted thier own story based on the original tale. Many of the primary concepts are preserved: Lucius still turns into a donkey. The rose is still a vehicle for transformation and the journey is condensed. There is a real love that exists between these two characters, becoming the seed for their metamorphosis together.

The telling of the story has taken Mia and Jonah deeper into their own artistry, The visual aspect includes melodious chronicles narrated by stop motion clay puppets, charcoal animation and more.

SF Rain

Written By: Mia Mustari

Take me down to the water
Put it in my cup, Fill it up
Till she overflows with
Starry-eyed contemplation
She's a slave of sensation
She's the queen of the dreamers
Roll dice roll

Walking through peanut brittle air
Slurping on my body through the straws of my raised hair
Over sloppy sidewalks serving soupbowls of champagne
While people run like puddles down the supermarket drain
Downtown San Francisco in the rain

Watercolor cars careen precariously past
Slip, slip sliding down black satin sheets of glass
Brakes scream in protest, they don't wanna slow down
And the mermaid swimming by, she lost her legs in her wet gown
Downtown San Francisco City's

Whiskey is washing the sky
I throw back my head drink it dry
Pour an ocean in my cup
Cause I want everything beautiful
Everything ohhh...

I must be a shiny penny the way boys try to pick me up
I'm laughing cause I'm lucky, but they're all out of luck
Cause I'm tame as the sky and I'm calm as the sea
And I am what I do, and I do what I please
Downtown San Francisco City's

Whiskey is washing the sky
I throw back my head drink it dry
Pour an ocean in my cup
Cause I want everything beautiful
Everything ohhh...

Day drips from the sky like ice
Slowly melting as she crawls inside the night
Her curtains of cloud crack
And stars bloom in her black
And all across the city's arching back she lies

Benches lay like hardbound book covers waiting for stories
You're the page I wanna taste, don't make me waste this allegory
Put your penny in my pocket, if you don't want it, walk away
But if your able, lay your contents on my table
Let me raise your downtown San Francisco window shades

To the whiskey washed sky
We'll throw back our heads drink it dry
Pour an ocean in my cup
Cause I want everything beautiful
Everything ohhh...

Take me down to the water
Put it in my cup, Fill it up
Till she overflows with
Starry-eyed contemplation
She's a slave of sensation
She's the queen of the dreamers
Roll dice roll

Coalminer

Written By: Jonah Blumstein

Spread the word, let ‘em know,
he’ll be coming ‘round the mountain on a boat,
Singing songs about a lady in his head.
Ask him when he hits the shore, if his lady is lovely anymore,
Is she a lovely lady anymore

Come back home coalminer
We’re gonna sell everything you own
Come back home, you’re a fool to keep walking on.

Spread the word, call ‘em up, he’ll be crossing Pennsylvania in a truck,
He’s got buddies somewhere in New York.
Ask him when he hits the road, if he ever thought he’d be living alone,
With a lovely lady on the phone

Come back home coalminer
We’re gonna sell everything you own
Come back home, you’re a fool to keep walking on.

Spread the word, tell your friends, your lover’s gonna get you in the end,
Yeah you’d better keep your cover till the end.
Ask me when, you want to know, if you ever thought you’d be living alone,
It ain’t so bad to keep your hands to yourself

Come back home coalminer
We’re gonna sell everything you own
Come back home, you’re a fool to keep walking on.
Come back home, come back home
You’re a fool to keep walking on

Smile

Written By: Mia Mustari

I’m just sitting here with this guitar in my hand
Wondering when this ocean will ever carry me to land
And I say time keeps stretching us just like a rubber band
You say you just got to live your life and stop trying so hard to understand
And in the meantime

Maybe I could make you smile

I’m just sitting here with this guitar in my hand
And I’m pouring out this melody like it’s everything I am
And I say I must look so stupid here the way I fall each time I stand
You say it ain’t that way just gotta do the best you can
And in the meantime

Maybe I could make you smile

You found pennies in the corner with the dirt in the dark
They lit the table up in copper, with the sun, in the rolls
A thousand memories in dough

Chorus

Pardon me for smoking this old abandoned cigarette
But I got miles trails to wander and not enough time to forget
Bruise the night til its gone through the window in the wall

Offer me religion if it talks of a soul
And how a miracle will take you to that window in the wall
And the window in the star.

Fly This Cage

Written By: Mia and Jonah

I wish a wind would blow this house to pieces and I wish a wind would drag this place away.
I want the lightning to crack and smash this house to cinders .
Oh I wish a wind to drag this place away,
This heart of mine wants to beat itself, out of its cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage
I pray a flood will drag this house a distance and I pray a flood will drag this place away.
wake up, wake up, you best beware this evening cause my wish is with the one who swings the day
This heart of mine wants to beat itself, out of its cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage
