"p.o.e.t.s."

Who’s p.o.e.t.s.? How you guys all meet and started this band?

Marco- The People of Evolving Technique and Sound consist of Maine Lee, my self Marco (Mos valuable), and Doc Royale. Me and Doc grew up in the same neighborhood in 3rd grade and have been best friends ever since. Doc and Maine met later on during high school through music. Doc and I started making music under the name Evolution Entertainment for a couple years. Then later linking up with Maine Lee to create the P.O.E.T.S.. There ended up being a lot more members in the group but us three remain constant.

What’s the story behind the band’s name?

Doc Royale- We were sitting around trying to think up some cool names and P.O.E.T.S. popped up. We liked it and decided to turn it into an acronym using our previous name Evolution. After a while of more pondering i came up with People Of Evolving Technique and Sound. I felt like we fit that description a lot better than just poets. We dont write poems, we write kick ass raps.

What’s the method at the time of writing a song?

Maine Lee- Everyone writes differently. Some hear a beat and then write the song. Some people write a song and fit it to the beat. I would say I’m guilty of both. It all depends on the type of song for me. Usually if the song is fun & carefree, those songs I write after I hear the beat to create the energy. More serious songs i will write before I hear the beat and try to fit the emotion I want to portray into the beat. Dig!?

Marco- I feel like when we’re in our studio together it’s all about vibing off each others energy. Some times one of us will come up with an idea and the others feed off it and come up with some bars. But it does differ, sometimes I’ll come in with an idea or a hook to a beat and spit it. Then someone might have an idea to change a few things around during recording to make it better. That’s one of the good things about being in a group, minds come together.

Doc Royale- Yea!! what they said…

What are your music influences?

Maine Lee- Its hard to say cause I like so many genre’s. Not just hip hop, but to name a few I like TI, Lenny Kravits, Pac, The Fray, Drake, Yelawolf, Big Sean, Billy Joel, Keisha Cole, Sam Cooke, Papa Roach, n the list Goes on…

Doc Royale- Jurrasic 5, KRS-One, Common, Nas, Jigga, Pac, Zepplan, Hendrix, 8Ball & MJG, Pun,Twista, Bone, Cap One, and so on.

Marco- My influences would first have to be from my Pops Hector Vega. Also my Uncle Angel Vega. I remember they would jam out side late night on conga’s (Latin Percussion). I loved the hell out of the rhythm’s they put out. Then there’s Bone, Twista, DMX, Nas, Mobb Deep, Eminem, Outkast, Kanye, White Stripes, Marc Anthony, the Black Keys, The Kills, really old salsa and tons more.

How was it to opened for JCole?

Marco- It was a great feeling. It was like nothing I’ve ever done before. I went broke buying the tickets to sell for that show. It was all worth it though. Performing for a great crowd that showed support was amazing.

So tell us more about your upcoming new demo and mixtape. Any official release date, titles yet in mind?

Marco- The Demo should be done really soon. It should just come down to choosing which tracks go on it. 4-5 songs that bring our talents to the table. Our mixtape will take a bit longer to finish but will definitely be out by the end of 2012. No officail release date yet. Titles could be 100 proof 2, UI (under the influence), Evolve or Die. It’s still in the air.

So what has been the funniest moment you guys have been or took part while touring or playing a show?

Doc Royale- Yea we were at a little promo gig for a local magazine and brought a bunch of free cd’s to pass out as the dj spun our music. Mind you we had just pressed the first album and this was the first time it went public at a place we have never been to. Of course we ran out of cd’s to hand out and a group of drunk dudes starting fighting like little girls and crying over not getting a cd. It was funny because it was a bar filled with a bunch of burley biker type guys arguing over a free cd from a hip hop group they never even heard of before that night. Hilarious..

Are there any plans for the future we should be aware of?

Marco- After the Demo is done we just plan on performing a lot more shows with the mixtape and hopefully traveling. SXSW would be nice. Oh yea, we’ll be taking over the world soon too!

Where can we find more about your music?

Marco- You can can check out myspace.com/itzjuzmuzik , myspace.com/itzjuzmuzik2 , and soundcloud.com/mvaluable . twitter Follow @mvaluable

Do you feel you are moving on the right direction?

Marco- Yes definitely, as long as we keep putting a lot into our music and learning as we go we should be where we want to be. Sky’s the limit.

The P.O.E.T.S put together their first project called "Now or Never" in 2008. This mixtape made their first dollar by being sold at the first show they performed together. Their second mixtape called "100 Proof" was made in 2009. This cd was mostly sold at their local shows and shopping malls ntill they were escorted from the property for selling their units. The People Of Evolving Technique and Sound are a definite group of talent. The three together put out a high level of quality as well as versatility. Energetic shows and having fun in the studio is what they love to do. These guys are more like a group of good friends than a group that just makes music together. This group will still be together for years to come wether or not they are in the studio making music. P.O.E.T.S. are used to doing things on there own. They have built every studio they've recorded in by themselves. Their best one yet, with the best sound quality and comfort, is their current one called Sound Shop Studio in Waukegan Illinois. This is where they record and mix all of their new music on their own. They also open their doors for local artist to record as well. They have taken influence from many more genres than just hip hop. They enjoy everything from rock, reggae, alternative and more. Favorite artists include TI, Jadakiss, Kid Cudi, The White Stripes, Kanye West, and the list goes on.
