"Glasswerk March 2006"

“Don’t try to fit your hamster in the toy car, he’ll get stuck.”

Words of wisdom for the new millennium. Cracking lyrics, but Captain Yange manage to avoid sounding like a comedy act with an epic rock sound. The band comprises Jon Wilkinson, Scott Ralph, Si Waite and Paul Murfin, four talented and versatile musicians based in Stoke. Not only talented, but determined: as a three-piece, the boys financed and put out their own début, “Here You Are”, in 2003. Since Scott’s arrival twelve months ago, the band has developed a sizeable catalogue of songs for their next album and secured a name for themselves on the local gigging circuit.

Lead track “Sticks of Dynamite”, with its inspired lyrics, is quite heavy; a cautionary tale laced with riffs and lines that belie the band’s inexperience. Second track “The Things That I Have Done” is a more relaxed affair, a guitar-driven ballad that, again, shows off the musical skill of the band’s various members. In “Verbal Laxatives” Captain Yange parade a more alternative sound – Muse meets 70s prog rock – avoiding the traditional three-chord punk basis in favour of an odyssey in tempo and melody. It may sound weird, but it’s fabulous. Suck it and see. - www.glasswerk.co.uk
