Phyllis Hyman
Anyone who is a fan of old school R&B will enjoy this show, and of course all the fans of Phyllis Hyman. This show reflects the late R&B songstress through all her labels and eras of recording from Arista, Philadelphia Internation. Because of her role and Tony nomination in the Broadway play Sophisticated Ladies; she is often referred to as The Sophisticated Lady.
Phyllis Hyman A six-foot, one-inch beauty, sings for all ages, her style was second to none. Again it is not too easy to forget about how talented she really was. I really recommend Ultimate Phyllis Hyman Even if you never heard of Phyllis Hyman or heard any of her songs this is one of the best shows of all times and should not be missed by anyone.

Phyllis Hyman Incredible Singer, You Would Feel Every Word Just Like She Was Singing To You. Every song had its story and no one could bring it to life like
Phyllis Hyman. Fantastic entertainer love and adored by Millions including Roberta Flack, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Jon Lucien, Ashford & Simpson also Norman Connors. Worked with all music entertainer and groups The Fatback Band, Norman Connors, Pharaoh Sanders
She was such an incredible talent that her life was cut too short. Life left us with terrific memories talent music and a face and personality that are unmatched. Her promise showed early when she won a scholarship to a music school as a child. After graduation, she spent several years touring and singing with various bands until she was signed to Roadshow Records in 1975. Phyllis is the sound of real talent also Gorgeous Unblemished. Had her problems, but didn't foist them on other people. If Phyllis Hyman could only see how much her fans really loved her and her music! The production teams of Mtume & Reggie Lucas and Narada Michael Walden & Thom Bell gave her material that showcased her skill with sophisticated ballads. Hyman had more success when she left Arista for Philadelphia International in 1986, with the single "Living All Alone" putting her back in the R&B Top 20. She also sang on fusion and light jazz dates by Joe Sample, Ronnie Foster, and Grover Washington, Jr., a more conventional jazz session for McCoy Tyner, and a pop date with the Four Tops. Tragically, Hyman took her own life on June 30, 1995;

"R&B star R. Kelly will write and produce a song for Chicago's Maurice Mahon, winner of the "Chicago Idol" contest."

Old news, for you to know who is he.
R&B star R. Kelly will write and produce a song for Chicago's Maurice Mahon, winner of the "Chicago Idol" contest.

Mahon placed first in a field of more than 1,000 entrants to the closely-watched contest.

Rapper Chris "White Boy" Riley placed second and gets a record deal with new independent label ICEE Records.

Mahon sang a stirring rendition of "I Need You Now." After he finished singing, the crowd in the Auditorium Theatre went wild. Family and friends waved signs and Mahon was seen shedding a few tears on stage.

Afterwards, Mahon seemed subdued, telling interviewers he was pleased and humbled with the honor. Mahon had competed in various talent contests in the past, including the 1996 Motown Talent Search and the 1997 V103 Ramsey Lewis Contest in Chicago.

"Chicago Idol to sing at SummerFest"

Chicago Idol to sing at SummerFest
One way or another, Maurice Mahon will get a hometown gig

By Tom Holmes
Contributing Reporter

Forest Park resident Maurice Mahon has made it to the big time.

After winning WGCI's Chicago Idol contest in 2003, he's toured four times with R. Kelly, opened for Alicia Keys, sung in front of 80,000 people in South Africa, and toured with Tyler Perry. In the fall, he'll be coming out with a CD called The New Face of Soul.

Yet, what he wants to do most right now is perform at Forest Park's SummerFest, coming up on June 4 and 5.

"I'm so wanting to do the community," Mahon told the Review. "This is bigger to me than singing across the world. You know why? I want to generate all the love I've gotten from being a musician and a singer."

Because the director of this year's SummerFest, Cec Hardacker, has already booked the bands and filled the schedule for the event, she's going to fit the Chicago Idol in between acts. One other possibility is to have him open the program on Saturday with the national anthem, as he did every night on a recent 42-state tour with R. Kelly.

Mahon hasn't let his success as a singer go to his head.

"When I'm on stage," he says, "it's showtime. Other than that, it doesn't pay to be above average. You do something great, and you come home and wash the dishes. You win a football game, and you come home and empty the garbage and feed your little brothers and sisters."

That's why he's happy to live in Forest Park with his wife of 17 years, who works as a beauty consultant in Oak Park, and his 8-year-old son, who goes to Garfield Elementary School.

Although his business card says "Maurice Mahon, ENTERTAINER," he understands what he does onstage to be a form of ministry.

"When you're onstage," he says, "that's your congregation right there. I think being in church all those years had everything to do with being able to connect with people. I just did a show at the DuSable Museum with Julia Huff three Saturdays ago - 1,700 people. The place was packed, and they connected. It's like having a conversation."

He acknowledged that music is a powerful medium that can have a big influence, especially on young people. In a sense, a talented singer has a certain power over his audience. "You can give them poison or you can give them life," Mahon says. "I prefer giving life."

Even when what he's performing isn't gospel music, Mahon refers to his program as inspirational. That's why he's so eager to share his music at this local level. "If 10 guys of my color would see me doing a positive thing," he said, "they might be changed and empower 10 others."

And then he added, "Soul music doesn't have a color to it. It's what you write from your heart. Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson wrote the greatest lyrics. But so did Elton John and Paul McCartney."

He said that his music, what he calls the new face of soul, is simply an extension of what those great songwriters began. To see and hear Mahon sing, go to www.mauricemahon.com. To get an update of when he'll sing at Summerfest, go to www.Summerfestfp.com.

"Chicago Stations WGCI-FM, WVAZ Recruit Their Own 'Idol'"

The recent premiere of the third season of "American Idol" pulled in blockbuster ratings for Fox?but TV isn't the only medium picking up on all things "Idol."

Last year, WGCI-FM Chicago and crosstown sister WVAZ (V103) held their first "Chicago Idol" contest. And like

"American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard, "Chicago Idol" winner Maurice Mahon has become quite the local celebrity.

His debut single, "Closer to You," debuted at No. 69 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in the Jan. 31 issue. And Mahon's success has station staffers already planning "Chicago Idol 2."

The idea for "Chicago Idol" came after WGCI/WVAZ OM Elroy Smith found himself engrossed in the Fox series. "There was no way I would be here [at the station] until 7 o'clock on Tuesdays," he says. "I would be rushing home to have dinner with my family in preparation for 7 o'clock to watch 'American Idol.' I found myself so caught up in the show that it became part of my Tuesday-night routine.

"As it was coming to a conclusion, I went to [then-GM Marv Dyson] and said, 'We need to do a 'Chicago Idol' competition,' " Smith continues. "At that point, he was not into 'American Idol.' One day he got home [and] his family was screaming, and he was wondering what was going on. This was when it was getting really heated between Ruben and Clay [Aiken]. The next day he came to me and said, 'Man, this "American Idol" is huge.' I'm glad he saw it, because he was now sold on it."

With Dyson on board, Smith says he knew the prize for "Chicago Idol" would have to be "monumental."

Smith met with R. Kelly and broached his idea for "Chicago Idol," which included the prize of a song written and produced by Kelly. "Without hesitation, [Kelly] said, 'That's something that I've always wanted to do. Let's make this happen.' "

The stations began soliciting on-air for submissions and by the deadline had received 1,222 entries. Those entries were pared down to 300. The semifinalists were then auditioned before a panel of judges convened by Smith and narrowed to 15 finalists.

"Since there were so many people, we had two audition rooms working at the same time," Smith recalls. Judges in each room were asked to pick the best seven contestants. "We ended up with 15 finalists, and Maurice was the wild card.

"The other people that judged in the room that I wasn't in came in and told me about this guy who sang Smokie Norful's 'I Need You Now' and smoked," he adds. "They were raving about . . . this Maurice Mahon."

Mahon beat out the 14 other competitors, impressing the judges, who included Smith, Chicago indie retailer George Daniels of George's Music Room, Jive artist Syleena Johnson, producer and Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam artist Kanye West, WGCI APD Tiffany Green and V103 APD Armando Rivera.

THINKING POSITIVELY

"I took it kind of lightly until I started listening to the radio and I heard about the prize?a song with R. Kelly," Mahon says of the contest. "I went in thinking positively and that I would place. I made it through the 300, the 15 and then I won. Even thinking about it now, I get numb. It sometimes seems unreal."

It doesn't seem unreal to Smith, who saw the way the crowd responded to Mahon at the competition, held last July. With more than 3,000 people in attendance, Mahon and the other finalists performed, with Kelly closing the show.

"When Maurice came out singing 'I Need You Now,' the whole place was silent," Smith says. "I thought the crowd wasn't loving him. You could hear a pin drop."

It turns out "the place was silent because they were in awe," Smith adds. "They applauded him, without an MC egging them on, for easily 35 seconds. If the judges would have come back with a different winner, it would have been a very, very disappointing night for those 3,000 people."

While Mahon won the competition, it was never guaranteed that WGCI or WVAZ would play "Closer to You," the single written and produced by Kelly. However, Smith says that Kelly's track record speaks for itself.

"With the success of R. Kelly and the fact that everything he touches gets on the radio, I felt confident that whatever R. Kelly was going to do with Maurice it would be a song we would play comfortably."

'AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT'

Smith recalls the first time he heard "Closer to You." "I went by the Chocolate Factory to get the song . . . right before Christmas," he says. "I put it in the CD player, and tears almost came to my eyes. I remember the day it all started and to see it evolve into a real song produced by the No. 1 R&B producer in the country right now?it was an emotional moment for me. It took a while for me to go back home. I just drove around listening to it. I was trying to find people to enjoy this moment with me. I called Maurice, and he came to my home to hear the song."

For Mahon, the song represents what has happened during the past several months of his life.

"Working with Kelly has been a novel experience," the singer says. "His coaching me has been the highlight of my life. Since then, we've done several songs."

Mahon says the song that Kelly wrote for him "does a great job in describing me, my character and my position. 'Closer to You' has been the topic of my life."

Smith decided to wait until the new year to premiere the song on his stations. "Since it was Christmas time, I didn't want to rush to put the song on the radio," he says. "People's minds are elsewhere, and with the Christmas music that was playing the song would have gotten lost. So, we came up with Monday, Jan. 5 [as an add date]. Throughout the holiday period, we promoted the fact that we would be debuting the song on that date.

"We debuted it at 7 a.m. on 'GCI," he continues. "The response was great. Every phone call that came through was positive, and the producer wasn't screening them. We had [Mahon] on for close to 50 minutes."

Since the debut of "Closer to You," Mahon has appeared on the local Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates. Between WGCI and V103, "Closer to You" has gotten more than 200 spins to date.

"It is unbearable," Mahon says of his newfound fame. "I've tried to find the right words to describe it, but I can't. Every time it comes on the radio, I turn everything else down. I'm just listening. The song means a lot to me. It means that I'm getting closer to my goals and dreams."

According to Smith, "Closer to You" has also caught the attention of other stations.

WJLB Detroit PD K.J. Holiday heard a promo that the Chicago stations did for the song and contacted Smith asking for a copy.

"I got an e-mail from K.J., and he told me he was putting the song into his Quiet Storm rotation," Smith says. "For K.J. to just hear it in passing in a promo and put it on was incredible. The single then came up on the Clear Channel urban conference call. So, we sent it out to all Clear Channel urban stations."

'CHICAGO IDOL 2' PLANNED

Mahon's success has spurred interest in a second "Chicago Idol" competition.

"I've already locked in Kanye [West] to be a part of our second 'Idol' competition," Smith says. "With it evolving the way that it has, Maurice has really raised the standard because of this powerful record. If you didn't know that this was the 'Chicago Idol' winner, you would just be driving along and say, 'What a beautiful song.' He blends in that well with all the heavyweights that we're presently playing on the station.

"With the success of our first 'Chicago Idol,' I guarantee that we'll be getting phone calls about the contest before July," Smith adds, "and the tapes will probably double because of what they've seen happen to Maurice."

As for Mahon, several major labels are courting him. At present, Kelly's management team has been working with Mahon's team in handling label inquiries.

Prior to becoming the "Chicago Idol," Mahon was working full time at a barbershop and part time at a post office. "This was an opportunity for me, and I took advantage of it," he says of the contest.

"When you think about it and you dream about it, you know it can happen," he adds. "I just kept being persistent by knocking on doors, and this is one door that has opened up wide, and all the goodies were in there." - Airplay Monitors

Bio

Born in the Inner-City deep in the soul roots of Chicago Illinois, New Face Of Soul has risen to the top of Chicago's Soul and R&B scene in 2009 with their sultry Motown sound and Authentic Chicago soul, where they have been deemed by club owners and fans alike as The Midwest's #1 soul group. Maurice Mahon, the bands Lead vocalist and founder of "New Face Of Soul" is the winner of Clear Channels "Chicago Idol" and R. Kelly's only male background singer which are just a few of his many musical accolades. His vision back in 2008 was to form a group that could promote change and collectively bring together many of Chicago's best musicians and vocalists onto one stage. Maurice called upon the assistance of the famous guitarist Greg Landfair who has played on R. Kelly's hits "I Wish", "When a womans fed up", and Maxwells "Fortunate" to be the bands Lead Guitarist. Maurice is also assisted by Kaleb Searcy one of Chicagos own vocalists and producers whom has opened for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Twista and others. Also Lionel Richies well known Bass Player B.J. sits in from time to time adding to the intriguing soul selections which is intrinsically New Face Of Soul. The Band has played in front of thousands of fans, in Arenas, Festivals and many Major clubs including the top venues in Chicago such as the "Taste of Chicago", The Dusable Museum, and the famous "Shrine" nightclub.
The band's latest album, The Grind, combines Maurice Mahon's classic velvet vocal work and orchestral arrangements infused with guitar, fender rhodes rhythms and "spot on" Temptation-like Harmonies to create the group's most sincere work to date. The Group also consists of accomplished artists such as Malcolm Banks, Joshua Scott,"JROC" Edwards and David Mathis. With standout tracks like "Stay On My Grind," and "Closer"(Produced By R. Kelly) the music of New Face Of Soul appeals to soul fans and non-soul fans alike. "Change the music, Change the motive" is the powerful mission statement that the group lives by, As if on a musical mission from God paving the way for change by injecting life, love and class into the landscape of todays music. New Face Of Soul is more than just a band, it is a movement...A movement that can inspire generations and communities to regain focus and come together once again in spirit and unity. If you are looking for a good time with good people, and an unbelievable musical experience you must see for yourself, The New Face Of Soul!

About Maurice Mahon:
Maurice Mahon (CEO & Founder of New Face Of Soul) is no newcomer to the music business. He's been in numerous plays, concerts, and clubs to have his name thrown around the Chicago area. With his sleek smooth tone, he's been establishing himself and making his voice loved by the ones that come to see him. Maurice has worked with artist such as R Kelly, Tyler Perry, Kelly Price, Kim Burrell, Angie Stone, Christopher Williams, Dave Hollister, Shawnna and many others. His style is jazzy and his tone is deceptive. His debut album Fifth Season was released in July 2005, and he got a chance to work closely with R Kelly for the hit single Closer to You. R Kelly wrote, produced, and composed the hit single, and it hit the billboard charts as one of the top 100 r&b singles. Mahon is no stranger to the theatre either, with his latest production that just toured the nation, Issues "We All Got Em." Written and produced by Laterras R. Whitfield, the hit play packed theatres from state to state, and Mahon pleased the crowd once more, capitalizing on each male character. His skill for acting was another way of displaying his many talents, that revolted around music. There is alot of people in the industry doing similar things, but Maurice is determined to make room for himself as a vocalist to be recognized.
