Bio
It starts with old songs. Really old songs, the ones that have been worked over a hundred times, revived then forgotten, beloved, ruined, then rescued.
The Old Toad Guitar Duo starts with dusty 78’s and pawnshop Victrolas. They collect haunted Appalachian Ballads, ragged Bluegrass numbers, Tin Pan Alley romps, and then they go to work. They kick the tires of old American tunes; give them an overhaul. They call these “new” compositions American Unoriginals—you’ve heard these songs before, but not like this.
The Old Toad Guitar Duo is Steve Mattingly and Matt Cochran, longtime musical collaborators who first met at the Eastman School of Music in 1995. They are co-founders of the groundbreaking Tantalus Quartet, with whom they regularly appear at important concert series and festivals throughout the U.S., Europe, and Canada. Steve and Matt formed the Old Toad Duo to explore the roots of Americana, joyfully tinkering with the richness and diversity of America’s musical landscape.
Oh…About the name? The Old Toad is a pub in Rochester, NY that Steve and Matt would frequent during their student days.
Cheers!
