Biography

2013 Texas Solo Artist Award Finalist, One who May Ascend
(OMA), arrived on this planet in Madison, Tennessee in June, 1994, and
was raised in Madison, Bronx, New York; Fort Worth, Arlington, Corpus
Christi, and College Station, Texas. Representing the Dallas/Fort Worth
area and the world as a whole, OMA is not your cliche drug-slinging
wanna-be thug rapper. His style is - to say the least - different. With
intricate lyrical content and concepts that can only be explained by
some level of divine intervention, OMA has many titles, among them:
leader, lyricist, martial artist, entrepreneur, underdog, and
philosopher, but above all, he is a human being.

OMA began writing lyrics at the age of 14. Since then, he has
released two major works - "ASCENDING; The Best of OMA" (Released May
17, 2013) and "Breaking Even" (Released August 3, 2013), performed in
multiple events such as the 1st Annual Texas A&M - Corpus Christi
"APOLLO" 2013, the Corpus Christi Music Walk June 2013, the Corpus
Christi Art Walk August 2013, the 2013 Battle of the Bands at the Texas
House of Rock, the Dallas Music Conference and Showcase (DMCAS) 2013,
the 2013 "Rap-Zilla" showcase in Austin, the 2013 Texas Solo Artist Award Finals, the Wakarusa  Waka Winter Classic 2014 after being one of five North Texas artists chosen to compete at the "Battle for Wakarusa" showcase at Trees in Dallas Texas, the 26th SBSLC (Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference) freestyle rap battle in 2014, worked on numerous
collaborative projects (including the release of the Metal/Rap EP,
"Breaking Even" with Corpus Christi native band, The Fallen), has been
streamed on numerous radio stations such as: HNS Radio, Unsigned Hype
Radio, NewTribez Radio, Radio Airplay, and KANM Radio, (including his
interview on KANM), has had his premier demo, "ASCENDING", featured at the Austin Mic Exchange's Mix-tape Market Place after being selected as one of the twenty local artists to be featured at the 2014 MLK Block Party hosted by the Austin Hip-Hop Scene, and has received many awards, including the
Scholastic Silver Key award for poetry on the national-level. He is
currently unsigned and a student in the Texas A&M system, which has played a major part in his success; from his original
compositions being studied in Dr. T.J. Currys Introduction to Hip-Hop
Philosophy Class (PHIL 252-500) on campus, to being featured on Texas
A&Ms Department on Hispanic Studies Facebook page for an original
five minute song written fully in Castilian Spanish, to winning the 26th
annual SBSLC (Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference)
freestyle rap battle hosted by DJ BANDCAMP (Official DJ of Stalley, the
Indiana Pacers, and BET 106 and Park) and Texas A&M.

In the past, my acquired experience and skill-set has enabled me to
win a National Scholastics silver key award for poetry, have my premier demo, "ASCENDING", featured at the Austin Mic Exchange's
Mix-tape Market Place after being selected as one of the twenty local
artists to be featured at the 2014 MLK Block Party hosted by the Austin
Hip-Hop Scene, perform original

Humble Beginnings

Written By: One who May Ascend

Intro
[Dialing phone, Yawn]
Hello, OMA residence. Speak
Uhhh, hey Malik. How’s it going?
Malik? Sir, I think you have the wrong number…
Well, I was pretty sure this was the right number. Consider this a wakeup call. Don’t you remember me, Malik?
That voice…
Verse 1
Don’t you remember? How could you
Forget the inner childhood who was behind you
Each step of the way Malik?
Seven of the days a week,
Yeah, we messed up to say the least
Every now and then, but now that you’ve let me down again
Drowning in misery, history repeats by itself
What must I do to remind you
Of the times you needed my help?
Surely, you didn’t get here all by yourself?
Now did you? How can you turn your back
And forget to observe that
Simple principle to stay modest
But now that your earnings have tripled, you can’t pay homage
That ain’t being honest, a clean conscious
Remembers where you came from because you can’t run
Fast enough to escape from memory lane son, don’t you get it?
It hurts to even ask; you may be leaving the past, but you’ll be back for a visit
And don’t you forget it
Chorus
Hey me, it’s you, from the past alias, dude,
Visiting you of the future to ask late me if I may, ok
See if the present is a gift like they say,
Maybe it’s true, but it ain’t the excuse for behaving shady as you
Turn into the person you’re changing into
– you’re friends, you’re family who made me, shaped me, from a baby to you
Verse 2
Before you had friends, or followed fads, trends,
And the latest fashions or V-necks,
You were depressed, one of the rejects
At recess you would read unless a bully messed
With us, taking your glasses, it was a game
For them, playing for practice, bonus points
If they get a smashed lens, for us boys
It’s eight or six lashes, back whelps from Dad’s black belt
Where my back had swelled, my choice was
To become numb and callous – cold shoulder as you grow colder
With the world – o remember when you didn’t know how to get a girl?
Getting turned down, now you’re sick of her?
Since when did you get the nerve? Remember this kids a nerd
So now that you get your clique yeah sure it’s easy
To forget the insecurities, Huh, you’re a tease
I was being facetious, the stronger of trees
Are deepest rooted – never deceive the peeps
Who believed in you, kid
Verse 3
Back in the day we would be passing the daily
Time together – that is amazing when I consider
What has been happening lately, acting so strangely
As if you blame me
I remember when I was in the picture perfectly
None this nonsense would’ve gone if you heard from me
Some thought you were much worse to read comics – you weren’t a nerd to me
I’m just nervously watching what I’m disturbed to see;
A grave I’m burying deeper, if it weren’t for me
And the family, my very friends, teachers,
And librarians either, I barely would be the
Man I am today, Man I cannot say
Thanks enough when there are so many to count on
And those you look down on, say thanks for nothing
So what if they’ve seen you grow up and for what?
Then we forget them? You want to be forgiven?
Why? You told yourself to hold yourself high
I wrote this oath myself
I hope it helps, bye
[You knew who you were, sounds crazy? It’s true, somewhere in there is the same me as you]

Lost In Space

Written By: One who May Ascend

Lost in Space
Verse 1
Who am I, if I am lost?
Time, you can’t price, but you can’t deny the cost
It’s my exhaust to right the wrongs of when I defy the laws
Of gravity, when I lift off, despite the thoughts
Of blasphemy – catastrophe blasting me rapidly
Into the inner galaxy where there’s actually
Nothing to grasp hold to, nothing that must hold true
And practically nothing that you won’t do
Huh, in that case, forget what they told you
The more we learn what it’s like to be born
Deformed and reborn, the more
You won’t be torn between doors, and be sure
You aren’t on a detour, as motherboard, your fam, and old man plead for
You to get with the program
You go stand your own land
I’ve never been with the program
Chorus
I’m lost in a world of my own
I’ve crossed, in the whirl of cyclones
I fought against the wind to search for my home
Why not? Bends begin to merge but I don’t
Know where to turn because I roam their high road ways which
I don’t face it’s hard to find those places
Of refuge I’d dwell then recues myself instead
I refuse to lose myself and lose my head
Verse 2
How can you be yourself when you don’t know who you are?
If you have to ask for help, then you know you’re too far
Go shoot through the stars to see, learn yearning
Departure, forgot to consider it’s a harder journey
Back, unless you’re not returning
Either way, you’ll never forget the scars you’re earning
On your face, so face it now while spacing out?
Pacing round, breaking down, no gaining ground without
Pain endowed, waiting “how long must I sustain in doubt?”
Maintaining it out where no one’s upstairs
Even if I cried, no one could hear
The screams, or the slow run of tears
So I don’t much care if my ass just stays
On the sofa – just there as I wait
To pass away
After all, I’m going nowhere fast they say
Verse 3
Earth to Malik, Earth to Malik,
Where are you going? What do you seek?
I don’t know just what to do
Oh, but once I do, you would be
The first to know, taken by the depths
Of the deep, side effects were irreversible
I invest in the need to critique the worlds by the best
But see the worst of both, burst bubble
The greenest grasses by the fence, they were for show
Yes, they were for sure, of course I should’ve known sooner
In order to go U-turn
To come home, after you stumble
Out on your own, it’s good to know you’ve hung on
To decide it’s wisest when I could buy into the likeness
Of identity crisis
Because my entity’s lifeless
(Final)
This is where I go
This where I stand
This is all I know
This is who I am
This is where I go
This where I stand
This is all I know
This is who I am
This is where I go
This where I stand
This is all I know
This is who I am
This is where I go
This where I stand
This is all I know
This is who I am
