"5 Completely Irrelevant Questions with PandaCorn"

The deliciously wonderful yet oddly compatible combination of hardened Moose Jaw music veterans Brodie Mohniger and Megan Nash put aside blistering solos and “aw-shucksy” country charm to form what could be considered Moose Jaw’s premiere supergroup; PandaCorn. In January they shredded the streets of Alberta in their plush costumes and Hollywood swagger. But for now they’re back to slimin’ Moose Jaw
streets.

"Moose Jaw Duo Leaves An Impression With Audiences"

When Brodie Mohninger and Megan Nash decided to form a duo, they knew it would be important to set themselves apart visually.

Mohninger had accompanied Nash in many of her solo shows but the different approach they sought for the duo, a distinct image was needed.

"Pandacorn Makes Keyboard Powered Rock"

Pandacorn, aka guitarist Brodie Mohninger dressed as the panda and Megan Nash, sporting a stuffed unicorn head which kept falling over her eyes as she played a mini keyboard, played a solid set of upbeat indie rock at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Jan. 17 for a good sized Thursday night crowd of approximately 25.

They took turns singing lead while drummer Nick Davies held them together.

Nash added weird keyboard bleeps and bloops. One highlight was reminiscent of Michael Jackson‘s Billy Jean.

Throughout, Mohninger supplied jagged guitar riffs and solos, sometimes sitting down to play his guitar on his lap.
The duo had very complementary voices reminiscent of Twilight Hotel if they played indie rock instead of blues and folk music.

"Pandacorn blends voices"

PandaCorn is the result of a misdated Halloween gig and also a new collaboration between Moose Jaw based singer songwriters Megan Nash and Brodie Mohninger. They play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Jan, 17.
Pandacorn’s Megan Nash and Brodie Mohninger.

“We were playing what we thought was a Halloween gig and Megan had a unicorn costume and I had a panda costume,” related guitarist/ keyboardist Brodie Mohninger adding when they called to confirm the gig, they learned it wasn’t a costume party or even a Halloween gig at all, but they still had the costumes.

“ But somebody thought it would be a good name — Pandacorn,” he continued.

While he has backed Nash many times for her solo gigs, they have been playing together as Pandacorn for about a year.
Mohninger, who was playing in an experimental jazz/ rock/ progressive rock band called Brain Sauce before Pandacorn and Nash, who has a successful solo career, thought Pandacorn was a great outlet for songs which didn’t fit in with either projects.

“Megan is a very accomplished singer and Brain Sauce plays a lot of experimental music. But we spent a lot of time working on two part vocal harmonies, (with Pandacorn)” he said.

“So that’s the biggest difference,” he said adding as a result the songwriting process was a lot more collaborative between the two.

They have also been trying out different drummers, so for this short weekend tour of Alberta, also including stops in Calgary and Edmonton, Edmonton drummer Nick Davies will be joining them to kick things off in Lethbridge.
“ He plays with Alex Vissia, so I know him from there,” he said.

“It’s hard to find a drummer in Moose Jaw who is able to tour. He’s a great guy and a great drummer so I’m looking forward to that,” he continued.

He noted touring in the winter is tough, so they just focus on weekends.

“I remember one time touring with Brain Sauce. We blew a tire on the on the highway by Leduc and a blizzard was coming in. Luckily the guy driving the bus slowly guided it to the side. It was just brutal. The RCMP had to pull us into town for two kilometres in reverse,” he related.

Nash and Mohninger have been working on eight new songs to be released soon.
“It will feel really fresh for us to go out there and play them,” he said, promising a rock and roll show on this tour. - LA Beat

Bio

PandaCorn is the lovechild of dance floor fantasy and unabashed lyricism with a kick-drum heartbeat and rock n roll soul.

Based out of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, PandaCorn is the brilliant result of the combined creative restlessness of a country sweetheart and a 70s-inspired guitar hero. Unicorn-clad and panda-suited, Megan Nash and Brodie Mohninger serve up harmonized sincerity on a bed of synth bass and wet guitar lines. But looking beyond the quirky stage-wear and your gyrating limbs, you will notice that there is really nothing childlike or candy-coated about PandaCorn.

Shrugging off youthful ideals and digging up questions about conventional living, Nash and Mohninger write candidly on themes of the modern-day male and female perspectives. From child rearing to forgotten friendships, PandaCorn reflects on the stresses of everyday life through a tongue-in-cheek lens, fearlessly focusing on what makes a heart heavy.

It is the dichotomy of their roots that makes Nash and Mohningers collaborative sound so refreshing. Abandoning the country comfort of her acoustic guitar for the foreign smoothness of synthesizer keys, Nash lays down fat synth bass while crushing the whispering indie-queen stereotype with her powerfully luscious vocals. Once the frontman of a vintage-rock band, Mohninger eases up on self-indulgent shredding to make room for an electric guitar across his lap and a microphone at his lips. Its this musical genealogy and evolution that makes PandaCorn so effortlessly clever. Imagine Neko Case jumping into a time machine and traveling back to the 90s to have a basement jam with the Pixies. Thats PandaCorn.

So what do you get when you cross the fascination of a mythical beast with the realism of an endangered species?

PandaCorn.

Quotes

The only thing ridiculous about Pandacorn is how under appreciated and over talented Megan and Brodie truly are. Just listen.
Curtis Anderson, Senior Producer Shaw TV Saskatoon

"PandaCorn brings catchy synth-pop with splashes of classic rock/blues guitar and thoughtful lyrics to bear in a deceptively powerful way. Masking their apparent musical expertise with disarming costumes, this Moose Jaw-based trio puts on a rousing, high energy show that has to be seen to be fully appreciated." Justin Crann, TC Media

"Panda Corn is a truly curious combination. Megan Nash's haunting alt-country vocals sang alongside a barrage of synth sounds and Brodie Mohninger's alternative guitars. It's like Neko Case took a trip back in time to the early 90s and met the Pixies for a jam session. And they have costumes! I mean... what more could you ask for?" - David j Taylor - award winning producer/singer-songwriter/all around nice guy
