"Nordstrom Links with area charities at opening gala"

Five chapters of The Links Inc., including Delaware Valley Pa., Montgomery County Pa., Penn Towne, Rancocas Valley, and South Jersey, were among the organizations participating in the spectacular Nordstrom Cherry Hill Opening Gala on March 25. Constance E. Clayton, former Philadelphia School District Superintendent and Penn Towne Links Chapter member, and Barbara A. Dawkins, president of the Montgomery County Pa. Links Chapter joined Katy Friedland, Rossen Milanov, Judge Joseph J. Roberts Jr. and Robert L. Williams, who served as event co-chairs.

The gala was entirely underwritten by Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc., one of the nation’s leading fashion retailers. The affair helped to raise more than $120,000 for signature projects of The Links Inc., The Philadelphia Museum of Art and Symphony in C.

“Nordstrom is helping us to raise money to put back into the community with all of the proceeds from ticket sales going toward much-needed charitable projects,” said Ernestine Carter, president of the Delaware County Valley, Pa. Links Inc.

“The exciting part of this project was seeing our guests be among the first to celebrate the opening of this beautiful new store in Cherry Hill, N.J. In these difficult economic times, to know that the Nordstrom company will be providing employment opportunities for approximately 350 or more persons from the Delaware Valley is very exciting news. My chapter members worked by volunteering their time in the Gala RSVP center, set up at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was our distinct pleasure to be chosen to be one of the beneficiaries of this fabulous gala,” said Dawkins.

“My experience with the Nordstrom team was one of pure joy. From our very first meeting at the Art Museum to the evening of the gala, their team (Nordstrom) was very accommodating and professional. It was a pleasure to work with a business that displays such a high caliber of trained personnel,” said Linda A. Harris, resident of the South Jersey Links Inc.

“It was our pleasure to participate in the spectacular opening of the Nordstrom store in Cherry Hill. Working with four other Pa. and N.J. Links chapters, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Symphony C of Camden and Nordstrom was a great experience. This cooperative effort exceeded our expectations in every way. Penn Towne Chapter wishes to thank everyone who volunteered, all guests who supported this event and to give special thanks to Nordstrom, who continues to magnanimously give back to the communities across this country. We were delighted to meet the Nordstrom family,” said JoAnna Lewis, president of the Penn Towne Chapter Links Inc.

The upbeat evening was attended by more than 1,200 guests who traveled from as far away as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York, including Link Madeline Stewart, alumnae member of Crown Jewels Chapter of Charlotte, N.C., to support the mega fundraising celebration. Gwendolyn A. Faison, mayor of Camden, N.J., was also there enjoying the festivities

Some of the many locals spotted browsing, making purchases from the store’s incredible selection of shoes, accessories, cosmetics and fashion or just having a great time were: Carole Williams Green, founder of Cobbs Creek Community Education Environmental Center; Angie Brown, owner of Soul Restaurant in Chestnut Hill; 6ABC TV news anchor Rick Williams and his wife Jocelyn; Dr. Earlene Bass Nelson; Evelyn Sample Oates, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s North Atlantic regional director; Audrey Johnson-Thornton, co-founder, American Women’s Heritage Society; WDAS-FM Radio personality and entertainment guru Patty Jackson; 6ABC TV producer Niki Hawkins Hunt and her mother, Gloria Hawkins; Mila Chavis; Jacqueline Manns Smalley and Gail Hawkins Bush.

The lively event gave guests a chance to get a first look at the sparkling, two-level store while enjoying live entertainment, hors d’ oeuvres, buffet dessert stations, specialty cocktails and shopping.

When I am “Out & About” in Philadelphia, there is always an interesting footnote. For example, I spoke with Michelle Lewis at the event. She was ecstatic because her talented niece and “American Idol” finalist, Patricia Lewis flew in from Puerto Rico to sing with the “Night Shift Band” and had some guests in need of a dance floor. Patricia is the granddaughter of the late Jean and Adolphus Lewis, fondly remembered as one of Philadelphia’s most socially active couples.

Congratulations to all of the organizations involved with the Nordstrom Cherry Hill Grand Opening Gala. It was a tremendous success for everyone. The store opened to the public last Friday. If you haven’t been to this fabulous store, please go! - The Philadelphia Tribune
