"Then There Was R3"

That long ride from Center City to Media via SEPTA gave the members of R3 plenty of time to come up with a name for their band. R3 Band’s members – Sean Martin, William “Bundy” McLaughlin and Steve “Vlams” Vlaminck – all call Media, the final destination on the R3 route, home. And recounting how Martin, McLaughlin and Vlaminck became R3 is similar to riding SEPTA: after years of delays and re-routes, the band ended up back at Point A.

The trio has absorbed the variety of musical styles expressed during an R3 performance. Theirs is not a show needing the embellishment of exaggerated stage behavior or dress. Musically, they touch on throwbacks to 1960s Dick Dale surfer instrumentals infused with bits of West Coast punk rock and peppered with, among others, more classic ‘90’s-style rock songs. If blindfolded during a live performance, audience members would easily feel as if they were sitting by a bonfire on the beach listening to these three rock out, rather than in a smoky bar in Pennsylvania. Bio

The R3 Band is a raw, gritty, energetic three-piece that packs a world of experience into its concise timeless rock songs – simple but convincing. The band’s name is derived from the R3 regional rail line that runs between their hometown of Media, Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia. The route spans the gamut from contemporary middle-class prosperity to the spirited urban boulevards – a fitting scope for music that appeals to fans of many genres.

Since their inception in 2002, the R3 Band has played over 100 live shows and have shared the stage with such prominent national acts as G. Love, Slightly Stoopid, Chuck Treece & McRad, J. Majesty, and Tommy Conwell. The R3 Band’s authentic lo-fi sound has developed over nearly half a decade of tireless practice and consistent live performance – the R3 Band are true innovators of a style that has become increasingly relevant in modern rock music.

“The music is a poppy groove with bits of jam and blues while vocalist Sean Martin has, as with most dedicated songwriters, a very passionate delivery.”
– Origivation Magazine

Sean Martin (vocals, guitar), William McLaughlin (drums), and Steve Vlaminck (bass) released the R3 Band’s debut album, "Sound," in 2004 and supported it with shows at many of Philly's premier live music venues (The Khyber, Grape Street, North Star Bar, Abilene, Pontiac Grille, The Fire, Troc Balcony, The Five Spot ... to name a few). The band will be entering the studio this summer with renowned producer Pete Donnelly (G. Love, The Figgs) to record their second full-length CD and are looking forward to re-establishing themselves in the Philadelphia music scene in 2008.
