"Raina Krangle: A Clairvoyant Artist with the Courage to Dream"

Apr.28, 2013
Thanks to our good friends at Women of Substance Radio, we’ve come to know Raina. She’s been a singer/songwriter for over 20 years. Raina is a self-taught musician with a fresh folk-rock vibe. Her newly released CD, “Solstice”, is a compilation of original songs over the last 20 years. Raina has heartfelt lyrics and a soulful voice that soothes your ears and makes you want to keep listening.
Raina’s September 2012 debut CD, “Solstice” has already received rave reviews and it’s climbing the ReverbNation charts to #5 in the Singer/Songwriter/Adult Contemporary. Her song, “Needle in the Hay” is at #3 on Women of Substance of Radio in California and at #10 on York Region’s Musiclynk Radio.
With over 50 self-written songs, Raina’s musical journey began as a 15 year old singer-songwriter playing the open-stage clubs in the Toronto music scene. White at the University of Western Ontario, she was well known for playing at various local clubs. In conjunction with CHRW, Radio Western, Raina’s song, “In the Morning”, was featured on a compilation called, Marginal Spaces, which was sold at HMV in London. Raina was awarded first prize in the University of Western Talent Search Contest and as written by Teresa Burns from Scene Magazine, “has proved to be a favourite with crowds.”
Living back in Toronto, Raina’s energy, voice and talent for performance continued to thrive and she plays at various clubs, coffeehouses, and bars in the GTA. Her latest release, Solstice consists of 13 of her original adult contemporary songs. Raina is a self-taught musician with a fresh folk-rock vibe, heartfelt lyrics and a soulful voice that soothes your ears and makes you want to keep listening.
Critic Cyrus Rhodes has written, “I like everything about Raina Krangle. She’s truly an infectious artist that possess a “Gold Standard” voice, look, songwriting, appeal, talent, vocal passion and overall artistic presence. She also is a very impressive songwriter and singer. From start to finish “Solstice” is an impressive catalog of music. The music is warm, marketable, uplifting and very passionate. The pin drop moments are amazing, and her falsetto is to die for. The songwriting is an interesting snapshot of music from a clairvoyant artist from Canada that has the courage to not give up on her dreams throughout the tears and the years. Make no bones about it – this gal has got some fight in her and she possesses a heart of gold. All songs are consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair and signature groove. Note for note, song for song this catalog is extremely likeable very much like the artist herself.”

"Muse's Muse Songwriting Website"

Sounds Like: Sheryl Crowe, Bonnie Rait, Jos Stone, Janis Joplin Technical Grade: 8/10 Production/Musicianship Grade: 8/10 Commercial Value: 8/10 Overall Talent Level: 10/10 Songwriting Skills: 10/10 Performance Skill: 10/10

The CD quickly takes flight with “Needle in the Hay” a perfect rocking intro groove that serves inviting vocals against slamming Americana-Rock fretwork, full tilt rhythm section against a mesmerizing vocal front from Krangle. Track 2 “Sunset" presents a grooving follow-up piece that serves up slamming rock rhythm, rich melody ahaionst a grand slam chorus. This piece flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition making for an impressive follow-up statement. Track 3 “It Don’t Worry Me” my personal favorite serves thought impressive psychedelic vibe, impressive guitar ambience against hypnotic vocal groove from Krangle. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear the musicianship from everyone involved is clearly above the bar with impressive bass lines, slamming solos, well placed strings, piano, impressive vocal harmonies all built upon a thick as a brick rhythm section. Song for song the effective combination of Krangle’s voice, world class songwriting and top flight musicianship it’s never called into question. Now turning our attention over to Krangle. As for her vocal abilities - she is quite impressive indeed. Her musical/vocal style is cut from the cloth of Cheryl Crow, Bonnie Rait, Janis Joplin and even Jos Stone or Natalie Merchant - but I will admit she can go toe to toe with any one of them vocally. Krangle showcases a crystal clear vibrato, with an appealing mezzo-soprano persona. All of this makes for a strong and confident vocal ability across the board. I could listen to her sing all day. I especially like how her voice just sort of flows and ebbs melodically with the music. This latest CD from Krangle delivers 13 compelling tracks all providing an interesting snapshot of an amazing artist with thought provoking lyrical wisdom with messages that are positive, passionate and extremely captivating. From heartfelt “Always” and “Arms Around Me” to jumping “Other Half” to melodic “Sunny Day” and Each day” and grooving “Psychology Woman” to rocking “Customer Service” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with track 13 “You’ll Come Around” the perfect wrap for a catalogue like this.

Growing up in a musical family where her mom occasionally sang with Bob Ezrin at a Yorkville venue, her dad played guitar, grandfather played piano and sister sang, it's a wonder a family band was never formed!  Raina began writing her first songs (like "Always") on a piano until she got a guitar and harmonica at 15 years and began hitting the open mics like Free Times Cafe and the El Mocambo in Toronto.

A performer for many years, Raina won The University of Western Talent Contest and her song, "In the Morning" was featured on Radio Western's CHRW and included on a compilation.  Since then, she has gone on to perform at venues all over Toronto like The Hard Rock Cafe, TorontoThe Central, The Reverb, The Dakota Tavern, The Amsterdam Bicycle Club, and several other venues across the GTA as well as Mike's Place in Israel and Jack’s in Tofino, BC. In October 2015, she was selected as an Official Showcase with her kids music at The Folk Music Ontario Conference. In addition to her own kids CD, Raina's Rainbow Party, her songs appear on a compilation cd- The Mighty Tribe with such artists as Tom Wilson.  The Mighty Tribe 2 was just released and features many of the same Hamilton based artists with the addition of The Arkells.

Her song, "Needle in the Hay" was nominated for the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award by Folk Music Ontario and the Ontario Arts Council and was entered in CBC Searchlight as well as her song, "Passing Me By". "Sunset" & "Needle in the Hay" have both been in the Top 10 Indie Countdown on Women of Substance Radio out of California and on York Region's Music Lynk Radio.  In 2016, she won The Newmarket Arts council Songwriting Contest for her new song, "Holy Land" and appeared on Rogers TV and Chop FM, Arts Talk Radio as well as Whistle Radio.

Her newly released CD, Raina Krangle- Solstice, is a compilation of early beginnings and new originals. Raina has emerged as a poignant songwriter who writes heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies you will remember and truly connects with her audience.  She has a soulful voice that will soothe your ears and a style uniquely her own, that will make you want to keep listening.
