Biography

ROGER GARDELLA
Singer/Songwriter

A life-long resident of New Jersey, Roger Gardella has been a writer, composer and performer of "wooden music" for over 35 years. A self-taught musician, he began playing his own brand of acoustic folk/rock to live audiences at the early age of 16 during the Middletown Folk Festival days and as a member of "New Morning", his first working band. During his college years at West Virginia University, Roger further developed his solo act by performing the campus towns throughout West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. Through his extensive travels, Roger collaborated with scores of other singer/songwriters from all parts of the country, taking from those experiences the various forms, sounds and techniques that have evolved into what is his style today.

As comfortable on stage as he is in his own living room, Roger has performed in such well known venues as the Bluebird Café in Nashville, Under Acme and Coyote Kate's of Manhattan, and locally at the Stone Pony, Tradewinds and The Downtown Café to name a few. His music has been described by his critics as passionate, courageous and cerebral. Roger's stage presence clearly demonstrates that he is not afraid to express his feelings in his music. As both a highly acclaimed solo original artist and member of several local cover bands, Roger continually challenges himself with today's popular musical offerings as well as creating clever renditions of seldom heard folk & rock classics.

"It's in the study and learning of the early greats that helps keep today's writers true to their art. The hardest thing about being a songwriter and performer today is keeping it original. We are so far along in musical evolution that it's improbable that a particular riff or melody hasn't been covered before. We've been so influenced by our heroes that keeping it fresh is our biggest hurdle. How many times have you heard someone say, "great stuff, I'll bet you're a big JT fan?" For these reasons, I work very hard at creating musical and lyrical phrases that have never been used before. I'm saying the same thing that's been said for years but I'm saying it in a way that's new and different. I suppose that's why I write so much from the heart. It's what you express in your music that makes people want to listen - and to me there's nothing more original than expressing what's in your heart." - Roger Gardella

Roger's latest CD, "Thanksgiving Day" released in early 2009, is receiving rave reviews from his peers and critics alike as getting regular airplay rotation on local radio stations in the tri-state area.

Lyrics

I Will Make It Through

Written By: Roger Gardella

I WILL PILOT THIS VESSEL
STEER THIS WEARY SHIP
CHART A COURSE OF WILL
AND MAKE IT THROUGH THIS TRIP

WITH THE STARS AS MY GUIDE
AND LOVE AS MY MATE
I WILL SAIL THROUGH THESE WATERS
AND CLEAR THESE NARROW STRAIGHTS
AND I WILL MAKE IT THROUGH

OF ALL THE DEEP HARBOURS
ON ALL THE LEE SHORES
THERE IS NO SAFER HAVEN
THAN THESE CABIN DOORS

WITH WIND IN THE CANVAS
AND CALM ON THE SEA
LIGHT FROM THE HEAVENS
ABOVE YOU & ME
AND I WILL MAKE IT THROUGH

FATE IS THE CAPTAIN
ON THIS OCEAN ROAD
IT’S ALL CARES AWEIGH
FOR THIS SAILOR’S LOAD

WITH NO PORTS OF CALL
AN UNLADEN HEART
THE WAKE ALWAYS BEHIND ME
AND LAND NEVER FAR

AND I WILL MAKE IT THROUGH
YES I WILL MAKE IT THROUGH
OH I WILL MAKE IT THROUGH

Thanksgiving Day

Written By: Roger Gardella

I WEAR MY COLLAR HIGH TO KEEP THE WIND FROM GETTING IN
WAITING FOR A TIME WHEN I CAN FEEL SOME HEAT AGAIN
THE CREEK WILL SOON BE STILL WITH FROZEN BLANKET SHOALS
THE MARSHES RIGID TAILS WILL BREAK AWAY

IT’S AUTUMN HERE ON COMPTON
NOVEMBER BY THE BAY
FALL HAS SETTLED IN AROUND ME HERE

IT’S AUTUMN HERE ON RARITAN
NOVEMBER BY THE BAY
FALL HAS SETTLED IN AROUND ME HERE
ON THIS THANKSGIVING DAY

THE SAILOR’S EMPTY MOORINGS NOW MARKERS ON THE FIELD
THEIR HULLS ARE HIGH AND DRY THEIR MAINSELS TIED AND SEALED
NO WAKING IN THE CHANNEL ONLY RIPPLES ON STILL WATER
FLAT BEFORE THEY EVER REACH THE SHORE

CHORUS

THE BEACHES QUIET SAND BLOWING GRAINS ACROSS THE BLUFF
WHERE NOT SO LONG AGO A SUMMER’S DAY WAS JUST ENOUGH
TO EASE AWAY THE CHILL OF A DREARY WINTER PAST
IN THE HEAT OF A LONGER LASTING DAY

NOW EACH ONE GETTING SHORTER AND DUSK COMES FASTER STILL
THE TREES ARE BARE AND TWISTED NO MORE COLORS ON THE HILL
IT’S BLOWING IN ACROSS THE CREEK AND COLDER ON THE HOOK
SUMMER’S STEAMY MEMORY FAR BEHIND

CHORUS

Your Love Is Gone

Written By: Roger Gardella

I ASK OF YOU FORGIVENESS
FOR LEAVING ON SUCH NOTE
THE FACTS OF WHICH WERE LEFT BEHIND IN COWARDESS, HE WROTE

FOR RATHER THAN BE FACE TO FACE
HE’D FACE THE TRUTH ALONE
YOUR LOVE IS LEAVING
YOUR LOVE IS GONE

FOR I AM DRIVING SOUTH
TOWARD THE ISLAND ON THE ROCK
PAST THE WINDY BEACHES
WHERE THE CORAL TURNS TO CHALK
TO SEE THE RAMPANT WATERS
CARVING TUNNELS OUT OF STONE
YOUR LOVE IS LEAVING
YOUR LOVE IS GONE

IT’S THERE THAT HE WILL STAY
TO WATCH THE SAILORS RIDE THE WIND
AT EASE UNTIL HIS SORROWS
FIND HAPPINESS AGAIN
YOUR LOVE IS LEAVING
YOUR LOVE IS GONE

I STARE DOWN ORANGE SUNS
INTO PINK AND BLACKENED NIGHTS
AND SLEEP IN OPEN WINDOWED ROOMS
UNTIL THE MORNING’S LIGHT
THEN RISE AGAIN TO FACE
ANOTHER TRUTH ALONE
YOUR LOVE IS LEAVING
YOUR LOVE IS GONE

ABOUT THESE DAYS I MARVEL
IN WONDERMENT, HE THOUGHT
I REST ASSURED THIS ISLAND
IS WORTH ALL THE BATTLES FOUGHT

IN CONFIDENCE AND CERTAINTY
IT’S HERE THAT I BELONG
YOUR LOVE IS LEAVING
YOUR LOVE IS GONE

Aglow

Written By: Roger Gardella

I COULD NOT FILL THE EMPTINESS

AND KNOWING THE ANSWER WAS MY FEAR, I GUESS

NOTHING FOR YOU TO DO OR SAY

I HAD TO MAKE IT RIGHT MY OWN WAY

THEN ONE DAY A STAR FELL FROM THE SKY

JUST AS THAT MOMENT FLASHED BEFORE MY EYES

LOSING MY TIMING AND MY STEP

THAT FALLEN STAR NOW DEEP INSIDE MY CHEST

SUDDENLY LIGHTING UP THE GROUND

A BODY OF SKY AND LIGHT, BUT NO SOUND

AND NO ONE COULD HEAR THE CRASH BUT ME

AND THAT FALLEN STAR NOW DEEP INSIDE OF ME

I WALKED FOR MILES AWASH WITH GLOW

EXPECTING TO SHINE FOR ALL WHO CARED TO KNOW

THEN TURNING TO DARKNESS WITH SURPRISE

NOT ONLY COULD NO ONE HEAR, THEY COULD NOT SEE MY EYES

THE NEXT TIME A STAR FALLS FROM THE SKY

WATCH IT IN AWE THEN LET IT PASS YOU BY

FOR NO OTHER LIGHT CAN BE YOUR STAR

IT’S ALREADY THERE AGLOW INSIDE YOUR HEART

SO IF YOU CAN’T FILL THE EMPTINESS

DON’T FEAR THE ANSWER, IT MIGHT BE YOUR REST

AND THERE’S NOTHING ELSE TO SAY OR DO

JUST LOOK FOR THE GLOW THAT’S DEEP INSIDE OF YOU

Woodpile

Written By: Roger Gardella & N A Collyard

It’s so quiet up here
in the middle of the night
I hear only the crickets from my hill
I’m looking down into
your valley below
Where nothing is nearly so still

I see your neon lights and your fast moving cars
I know it’s all goin’ on down there
But it’s much better up here, it’s just me and the stars
Try to tempt me, I really don’t care

Show me your lights
give me your buzz
I could take it all in for a while
But at the end of the day
This is where I’d rather stay
Up here alone on my woodpile.

Thought I’d never get up when I was deep in those depths
Spent many a night down below
You can’t steal my soul
up here on my hill
There’s no place
I’d rather call home.

I don’t need your lights
keep your buzz to yourself
I’ve already done that lifestyle
I’d much rather stay
Out of harm’s way
Sitting here on my woodpile.

Lost In Sussex

Written By: Roger Gardella

LOST IN SUSSEX, HOPE & MACAFEE
LOOKING FOR A CREEK OF TRANQUILITY
VIENNA’S NOT THAT FAR FROM THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE
HIDDEN IN THE VALLEY OF PAULINA’S VAIL YOU SEE

IT’S NO DIFFERENT TODAY
THAN IT’S BEEN IN YEARS
I REMEMBER THESE TOWNS
IN THEIR LAUGHTER AND THEIR TEARS

MINERALS ARE FINE HERE LIKE SUNRISE ON THE MILL
THERE’S LIBERTY IN MIDDLEVILLE, ANDOVER, IN WALLKILL
IN CULVER’S BRANCH THERE’S SILVER IN SAGANAW & BEAR
JENNY’S ‘BOUT TO JUMP INTO THE MIGHT DELAWARE

IT’S NO DIFFERENT TODAY
THAN IT’S BEEN IN YEARS
I REMEMBER THESE TOWNS
IN THEIR LAUGHTER AND THEIR TEARS

LOST IN SUSSEX, HOPE & MACAFEE
LOOKING FOR A CREEK OF TRANQUILITY
NOTHING’S WRONG IN WRIGHT’S POND, THE WATER’S CLEAR AS SPRING
AUGUST ISN’T HARD TO FIND, AS LONG AS WE CAN SING

IT’S NO DIFFERENT TODAY
THAN IT’S BEEN IN YEARS
I REMEMBER THESE TOWNS
IN THEIR LAUGHTER AND THEIR TEARS

LOST IN SUSSEX, HOPE AND MACAFEE
LOOKING FOR A CREEK OF TRANQUILITY

So Close, So Dear

Written By: Roger Gardella

I HEARD THE NEWS I KNEW IT WOULD COME
NO SURPRISE I WAS HURTING SOMEONE
SOMEBODY CLOSE SOMEBODY DEAR TO ME

AINT IT A SHAME THAT INUENDO
CLOUDS THE SUNLIGHT THROUGH MY WINDOW
LIGHT SO CLOSE LIGHT SO DEAR TO ME

THERE’S ALWAYS THREE SIDES HERS & MINE
AND THE TRUTH THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW IN TIME
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

WHICH SIDE’S UP OR DOWN TODAY
DEPENDS ON WHO’S HAD MORE TO SAY
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

THE KIDS ARE LEARNING THE HARD WAY
WHAT TO AND WHAT NOT TO SAY
WHOMEVER IS CLOSE WHOMEVER IS DEAR THAT DAY

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS NOT YOUR MONEY
SEE YOURSELF AS WE DO HONEY
SEE WHAT’S CLOSE, SEE WHAT’S DEAR TO ME

THERE’S ALWAYS THREE SIDES HERS & MINE
AND THE TRUTH THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW IN TIME
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

WHICH SIDE’S UP OR DOWN TODAY
DEPENDS ON WHO’S HAD MORE TO SAY
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

CHOOSE YOUR WORDS SO CAREFULLY
LISTENING WILL SET YOU FREE
WORDS SO CLOSE, WORDS SO DEAR TO ME

TIME WILL TELL A DIFFERENT STORY
TRUTH OF HEART & FADED GLORY
TRUTH SO CLOSE TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

THERE’S ALWAYS THREE SIDES HERS & MINE
AND THE TRUTH THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW IN TIME
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

WHICH SIDE’S UP OR DOWN TODAY
DEPENDS ON WHO’S HAD MORE TO SAY
TRUTH SO CLOSE, TRUTH SO DEAR TO ME

Set List

The Roger Gardella's solo acoustic act covers everything from unique covers of classic folk/rock tunes and obscure "B" sides to current pop & rock numbers and - of course - his originals. "The length of a set depends on the crowd for whom I'm performing. If the room is into it, I'll play all night!"
