Biography

Sam West is a songwriter. He crafts original songs. Bred on years of study in the realm of jazz, many moon-filled nights composing poetry, and a youth spent deciphering the ways of Motown and folk classics, his songs take on a unique melodic discourse that transcends pigeonholed genres while still remaining true to their influence.
West is currently at work on his second solo album 'Skeleton', set for release this summer of 2010. Songs featured on the upcoming album are available for sample in this EPK.

Traversing up and down the spine of Illinois for the past decade, West has driven up a network of new material and new fans. His 2008 self-published release 'Demonstrations' takes you on a journey through psychedelic rock-rhyme, solemn folk forays, and funky, tongue twisting portraits. The Sam West Trio released their first E.P. 'Steady' this March.

Listen to 'Sid Jazeer' and 'Go Easy' to get a sense of material Sam West will be promoting this coming 2010.

Heavy Load

Written By: Sam West

I like sleeping in the engine’ s fire
moving down the railroad line.
I like sleeping in the engine’s steam
as if in a dream.

The body beating a chest of coals
carrying on it’s heavy load.
Show us where to go
move our heavy load.

I like going where the tracks take me
Beyond the bend you cannot see.
Travel on to taste and be
part of a moving company.

Lucid metal down an empire’s spine -
The higher the price the quiker the climb.
Road on further past my prime.
You’d of figured it wasn’t mine.

Fell asleep on the railroad tracks
waiting for the train to pass.
Heard that whistle but I didn’t move;
listened to the engine’s soothe
Thunder under body stiff -
Rumbles closer but I didn’t lift
from my bed of rails.
Leaves to stain a bloody tale.

People came to check the scene
Said “Oh, what a tragedy –
to live your life with no control
over your soul.”

Stain on the tracks where the memories
used to pass between the breeze.
Now it comes to be
just another passing dream.

I like sleeping in the engine’ s fire
moving down the railroad line.
I like sleeping in the engine’s steam
as if in a dream.

The body beating a chest of coals
carrying on it’s heavy load.
Show us where to go
lose our heavy load.

Electric Chair

Written By: Sam West

Breaks my heart to see you sitting there
In the electric chair
Waiting for God knows what to come your way
And it breaks my mind in two to know I never knew
The real you at all at all at all

Break my Body break my bread for bones
And when you’re dead you’re alone
And when you’re alive you’re looking for the answer to the cancer in your conscious –
Interrupted in my pursuits

Gotta check the chickens in the coop
And did you catch the scoop
On tonight’s burglary, going down at three

It breaks my spirit just to hear it
You’ve gotta another life and I can’t be near it
Is it because I don’t wear makeup?
Sensations soldiers guarding a nation of boulders
Is there purpose on the surface or is she just crying on my shoulder to see if I’ll hold her?

Mold me softly in disgrace

Check your watches it’s about a quarter to two
And have you got the tools to push on through?
You take the window and I’ll take the back and in case of an attack I don’t know you and you don’t know me

It broke all balance when you spoke too loud
started to draw a crowd
as my things flew out the window
I got no more memory space for a disgruntled face
As you try to erase me from your place

And as we broke the locks on the storage barn
It set off an alarm – damn
I don’t give a damn at all at all at all

Trading all my touch for change
So when I get off this crutch try to love again it won’t feel strange
It’s good to know that even when you take it slow
If you fake it won’t germinate it no, it won’t grow
No seeds to sow

Mold me softly in disgrace

What have we got to Lose?

Written By: Sam West

Do you wish you were a fool
and you didn't know the rules
to the games we Play?
You can't hide your eyes tonight -
no matter how much we fight
live will find a way.

What have we got to lose, baby?
What have we got to lose, baby?

I'm sorry, so sorry,
nothing ever turns out like it should.
Light a match in the dark see if it's still good.
Would a' could a' called out your name like a flickering flame.
All I really want to know is
where my heart shall stray from here
another day another year.

What have we got to lose, baby?
What have we got to lose, baby?

Out in the night like a flickering flame I see her leave-

Do you wish that you could see
beyond probability?
Love will never know.
Do you fantasize the truth?
Love won't always spend in youth
time will turn the page.

What have we got to lose, baby?
What have we got to lose, baby?

I'm sorry so sorry
nothing ever turns out like it should.
Light a match in the dark see if it's still good to
hang around - does she make love when you put her down?
Does the future ever make a sound when you kiss?
Another reason to reminisce
the seasons change, and it all gets rearranged.

What have we got to lose, baby?
What have we got to lose, baby?
What have we got to lose, baby?

Whisky is the Devil (Cocaine is his Bride)

Written By: Sam West

Whisky is the Devil, Cocaine is his bride
When you hear them wedding bells go to hell or run and hide
Don't let your time commit suicide
By lettin' the devil and his bride inside

Verse:
The Devil saw her standing there
in the public sqaure
and their eyes met like cigarettes
burning in the night.
"How you feelin, baby?
Do you feel as good as me?"
"Sure I do," ol' Cocaine said
Then struck a smile like two legs spread.

Chorus:
Whisky is the Devil, Cocaine is his bride
When you hear them wedding bells go to hell or run and hide
Don't let your time commit suicide
By lettin' the devil and his bride inside

Verse:
They rushed to get a hotel room
and laid it on the table.
And when you smell that secrete hell
heaven don't need a friend.
"How you feelin', baby?
Take another shot for me.
We'll get lost in this fog romance
and jump at every chance."

Chorus (half):
Whisky is the devil, Cocaine is his bride

Verse: '
And in the night with your appetite
pulling at your heart
don't bend the way that demons pray
down into the jar.
"How you feelin' baby?"
In the morning hazy,
"Where's my money, where's my honey,
where's my damn delight?"

Chorus:
Whisky is the Devil, Cocaine is his bride
When you hear them wedding bells go to hell or run and hide
Dont' let your time commit suicide
By lettin' the devil and his bride inside
By lettin' the devil and his bride inside
By lettin' the devil and his bride inside

Sid Jazeer

Written By: Sam West

Sid Jazeer was his name -
Kept his conscious in a flame.
Saw the moon shine every other day
in the reflection of his dead father's face.

"Slow down, you're hurting me"

Sid met a man in the shadows
deep inside those Israel ghettos.
"You've been chosen," they said, "fight it till the end.
We'll show the video to your family and friends.

"Slow down, it's hard to believe"

Salvation's hard to come by.
You think you've got it figured out but you don't know why.
We live in illusion, pride and self-seclusion
wonder why, wonder why.

Sid scooted down the street
looking plain an obsolete -
along the marketplace, people and their kin.
Don't look them in the face they must suffer for their sin.

"Slow down ,you're hurting me"

Sunny day," the soldiers say amongst themselves
watching all the children watching all the people move in sandy air.
Sid prays to a silent God.
Says: "pull the trigger then we'll talk."

"Slow down, you're changing me"

Sid sat silent on the bus
thinking of heaven and the God he trusts,
when a child laughs in two seats over
breaks him from his thoughts to catch a smile from her mother.

"Slow down, slow down it's family"

Finally, the moment comes.
Bus lets off and the moment comes.
Sid shuts his eyes, prepares not to breathe.
He makes no compromise with this bitter tragedy.

"Slow down, slow down you're killing me
Slow down, slow down you're killing my family"

Salvation's hard to come by.
You think you've got it figured out but you don't know why.
We live in illusion, pride and self-seclusion
wonder why, wonder why.

The funeral march began,
another dead in the holy land.
They'll stop at nothing, so nothing ever stops.
We'll watch it in our homes like an episode of 'Cops'.

"Slow down, it's reality"

Sid lived in irony -
fantasized reality.
Touch your tradition my mission has been slain
by the bloody sword of anger that remains.

"Slow down, slow down you're changing me
Slow down, slow down you're killing me
Slow down, slow down it's family
Slow down, slow down it's reality"
