Biography

Born and raised in the two Virginias, Sarah White grew up with a love for rock and roll radio, dusty LP records, and the country music her father played on guitar. Her strong roots rock and country music influences are grounded in punk instincts, inviting comparisons to a wide spectrum of artists from Hazel Dickens and Chan Marshall to Kathleen Edwards and Jeff Tweedy.

Her band the Pearls features Ted Pitney formerly of bluegrass stalwarts King Wilkie on guitar, punk rock legend Michael Bishop of GWAR and Kepone on bass, and Stuart Gunter of roots rock faves Wrinkle Neck Mules on drums. Together this unlikely lineup helps draw out the force of rock and soul of country in Sarah’s “gorgeous, catchy and ultimately moving songs (Richmond Times-Dispatch).”

Working the live music circuit of her native Charlottesville, Sarah’s unique songwriting eventually caught the ear of hometown hero Dave Matthews who offers this bit of praise:

“Sarah’s music kills me; beautifully from the ground up, no plastic.”

Sarah received national accolades at the 2007 Mountain Stage New Song Contest where she won Best Song for “Sweetheart”, from the EP of the same name. She has performed with a variety of acts such as Bonnie Prince Billy, Justin Townes Earle, Earl Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Jolie Holland, Mason Jennings, Lilys, Chuck Prophet, and Michael Hurley.

This summer Sarah White & the Pearls played the Dave Matthews Band Caravan in Atlantic City and at FloydFest X. This fall White will appear in an independent film MY FOOL HEART starring Jim Waive, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Merle Haggard, Elizabeth Cook, Jim Lauderdale and many more.

A new Sarah White & the Pearls record is underway for 2012.

We Have A Song

Written By: Sarah White

Believe in a book, rely on a beach
Do everything to keep you in reach
Including to write a song of our love
Then we’ll have a song

The book that I sent you, written inside
The words that I love you, written inside
But you never got it, lost in the mail
So I never said it, it went unsaid
And then things got crazy
And I was glad
Cause I didn’t need one more regret

Like the day on the beach, I was so sure
I had you in reach, I was so sure
I said the words, they fell in the surf
So I never told you, you never heard
You walked toward the rocks
I watched you instead
Cause I didn’t need one more regret

Is it loss or regret, that makes the eyes wet?
Is it better to know what you never had?
I had you beside me, you didn’t know
I had you beside me, I let you go

So believe in a book, rely on a beach
Do everything to keep within reach
Including to write a song of our love
Now we have a song
Now we have a song

Sweetheart

Written By: Sarah White

Sweetheart, if you knew the pace
At which you fall from grace you’d slow down
Sweetheart, if you knew the pace
At which you fall from grace you’d come down

Sweetheart, what you need to know
It’s me that will keep us apart
Because my heart doesn’t really want to know
All the pain you hold in your heart

So leave, take what you need
Go with good speed
The traffic is light

So go, take what you feel
You need to be real
I’ll make it just right

Sweetheart, you think I’m giving up
I think I’m waking up right on time
If my heart to you was worth a dime
You’d roll me every time

So leave, take what you need
Go with good speed
The traffic is light

So go, take what you feel
You need to be real
I’ll make it just right

I Can't Wait

Written By: Sarah White

I can’t wait until you get here
I can’t wait to have a cold beer
I know when you get here
I’ll be so damn glad
You’re my bud, you’re my right hand
You’re a stud, you’re a grandstand
You’re the one who’s working on a plan
To work your way down from the mountain

So plug it in, let’s get a groove on
Turn it up, let’s play the old songs
The old forgotten melodies work their way down
From the top of the mountain
To the lines that surround them
To everyone who doubted you’d work your way down

Either way I believe
You believe in me

There are men on mountains, I’ve seen the drowning
I’ve seen you riding on the sky, I’ve seen you come down
Either way I’d have been there
I know your opinion
Every man has a day
To write his name down

I can’t wait for you to get here
I can’t wait to have a cold beer
I know when you get here
I’ll be so damn glad
Either way I’d have been there
I know your opinion
Every man has a day
To write his name down

Either way I believe
You believe in me

Either way
I believe
In you

Annie Was Our Angel

Written By: Sarah White

Annie was our angel
Precious little lot
The last of seven Christians
Cast into our pot

She stirred while she was sleeping
In her white lace trundle bed
But her nerves would slowly leave her
Roly poly head

She was her daddy’s flower
Sparkled like the dew
The first to come, the first to call
When the door he walked through

For the Cause he was gone
Her brothers gone too
On the day that Richmond fell
The sun came shining through
There was nothing more to do

And the day broke glorious
In Virginia in the spring
A million stars light the city
when the city turns to flame
Did you say my name

Soldiers came at nightfall
And encased the Christian home
Hopes so low, the prayers arose
With the fever at dawn

The soldiers rifled through every drawer
Searched in Annie’s room
And through her veiled delirium
They stabbed the mattress through
There was nothing more to do

And the day broke glorious
In Virginia in the spring
And a million stars light the city
then the city turns to flame
Did you say my name

Annie was our angel
Precious little lot
The last of seven Christians
Cast into our pot

Edgar

Written By: Sarah White

You can’t shoot a ghost with a 45
You can’t shoot a ghost cause it ain’t alive
You can’t kill a ghost with a 38
But Edgar tries anyway

Edgar takes his gun everywhere he goes
From the IGA to the Texaco
And nobody notices but everybody knows
Edgar’s gone away

They say come on Edgar / Come on home
You’re in West Virginia / This ain’t no Vietnam
Come on Edgar / We ain’t no Viet Cong
You’re in West Virginia / Come on Edgar come home

It’s been 30 years since the boy left home
For his teenage tour of Vietnam
He got on the bus the day after the prom
To the tune of the high school band

Now he’s walking Main Street with a 45
He’s shooting at ghosts in the back of his mind
And the neighbors down the street they don’t sleep at night
Since Edgar went away

They say come on Edgar / Put down that gun
You know good intentions / Always seem to turn out wrong
Come on Edgar, we ain’t no Viet Cong
You’re in West Virginia now / Come on Edgar come home

They say come on Edgar / Come on home
We never really missed you / Til you come back home
You’re in West Virginia / This ain’t no Vietnam
That war is over now / come on Edgar come home

That war is over now / come on Edgar come home
We never really missed you / come on Edgar come home
There’s a new war on / the TV

PRESS

Gorgeous, catchy and ultimately moving songs…
-- Richmond-Times Dispatch

It’s an album both spare and powerful, effortlessly and organically combining the forcefulness of rock and the soul of country. At the sonic center of the album is Sarah’s voice, the newly mature, edge-of-tears, catch-in-the-throat, flat-out heartbreaking voice.
-- C’VILLE Weekly

A delicately bare and pretty album that ensures the singer-songwriter a place in the company of Cat Power's Chan Marshall and Edith Frost. Yep, that good.
-- San Francisco Bay Guardian

Every now and then there’ll be a record that sounds like it dropped out of the sky with no accompanying context, no obvious influences or antecedents, no preconceived notions of what scene it’s supposed to fit into. That’s the situation with Bluebird, the excellent new album by Virginia singer/songwriter Sarah White…
