"Asheville Periodical"

Asheville Periodical - Blue Banner

"They have created a family of friends and fans who come out to nearly every show, and are also working now to gather in a home away from home here in Asheville. Their versatility allows them to move around and switch up their style. They can play a late night slot at a festival one night with drum and base style funk, and then go to an up scale restaurant the next day and play soft, melodic jazz."
Tiffany Narron - 2008

"Bootleg Magazine"

"Each show they perform is an experience, an organic tributary of musical knowledge. The growth of each song is much like the evolution of the band itself, its history and a path sprouting like the roots and limbs of an elegant tree." - Brian Tucker

"Sea of Tranquility"

Sci Fi lives up to its spacey name. The North Carolina-based band takes off with its self-titled debut of jam-influenced Southern-style fusion. Sci Fi opens with the lullaby-like "Intro," which segues into "Classical Dub," a dynamic track that embodies all of what is right and good about this trio: a tasty concoction of rock, jazz, reggae and jam. The (mostly) instrumental music swirls and glides with the precision of a band well beyond its first album.

Yet here Sci Fi is, taking listeners on a 70-minute journey that offers sonic travelers a glimpse into the band's live shows, which range from improvised, highly-charged late-night sets to laidback chill sessions. The one vocal track, "Wanderlust," features sultry and soulful Laura Reed at the microphone and reveals that Sci Fi still has numerous musical options. This is a promising debut from a band that has clearly issued a challenge to such scene veterans as the Disco Biscuits and Particle.

"Bootleg Magazine - Album Review"

Sci Fi's music is warm and accessible, an open-arms policy to everyone's ears. Rappers would be fortunate to have something like this to voice rhymes over, hippies will enjoy the free flow vibe and spine softening rhythms ('Ragus' featuring ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Ginza). 'Front St.' is the album's centerpiece in which jazzy origins make way for an elongated funky jam augmented by Greg Hollowell on saxophone. Tracks are simply free flow at times, running on their own energy path and seemingly no plan in mind. 'Listen To What We Say' and 'Jeb' are playful and childlike, full of swirling energy. 'Click' sounds like the engineer hit record as the band was warming up, like we're hearing the birth of a song. The song sounds as if it's built from the ground up - confused and wandering notes that shuffle around to find a place together and forming a song...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The only track with vocals, 'Wanderlust' by Laura Reed, peeks behind the curtain of the band's creative arsenal. 'Wanderlust' is a sassy R&B number where Reed is angelic as she is a temptress, echoing Res and Erykah Badhu. And 'Bass Outro' is an interesting piece of music, like self ruminating at the end of a positive day.

Sci Fi takes contemporary jazz and churns it up with world flavor percussion, innovative ambiance and jumping rhythm. At times reflective and playfully energetic, Sci Fi is all encompassing music, bridging people's ears and all people's cultures.
