"LA TIMES : Sean Falyon teaches you to DYI"

Other than "swag," it's possible that no word is more overused than "Grindin." It's been nearly a decade since the Clipse immortalized it in song and still, every rapper brags about his grind so much that you'd mistake them for baristas. But Philadelphia-raised and Atlanta-based rapper Sean Falyon has made it an art form, creating his "Sean Falyon Be Everywhere" campaign to illustrate his own ubuiquity.

Run into any rapper or rapper's manager and ask them about Falyon and they'll nod their head and say that Falyon really is everywhere. This past week he was in Los Angeles recording with producers for yet another mixtape. His most recent tape, last month's "SFBE2: West Philly 2 the World," found him working with underground stars Jackie Chain, Playboy Tre and Killa Kyleon.

Falyon's style is as sturdy as his build: burly baritone raps delivered nimbly over bass-heavy Southern beats. Think of him as a blue collar Rick Ross, offering booming inspiration raps about "chasing life" rather than chasing yachts. Other topics include welfare, the death of family members and the pursuit of happiness. It's thoughtful and heartfelt and befits his indefatiguable work ethic. Below the jump, Falyon offers Pop & Hiss an exclusive look at his strategies when working the rap hustle. - LA TIMES

"Music : Beats - Sean Falyon Mr. Falyon Meets SMKA"

Sean Falyon is all about making escapist hip-hop, and with his new project with Atlanta production crew SMKA, he lives up to his calling. The Philly emcee demonstrates insight and agility on the mic with songs like the mid-tempo groove, “Big City Nights” where he talks about fast living without being overbearing. Other standouts include “Gift of Gab” and the smooth, “Goin Away” featuring Bone Crusher and Joe Scudda. Times may be hard, but Mr. Falyon makes the days a bit easier with his above-average offering.

"Sean Falyon pimps his pen"

Meet the college dropout who got his start in music by designing T-shirts for such rappers as Ludacris, Three Six Mafia and Will Smith. No, he's not another Kanye West. On the contrary, Sean Falyon is more likely to rap about rocking a Soupy Jones original than Louis Vuitton.

"A lot of [mainstream] music people can't really relate to because a lot of people ain't rich," the Philadelphia-born rapper says. "I make stuff that the average layman can understand."

His latest mixtape, Sean Falyon the Great (Mr. Falyon Meets SMKA), due in April proves his point. The follow-up to his fun '07 release (Sean Falyon the Great: Fashionably Dope Vol. 1) includes such escapist tracks as "Goin Away," featuring Joe Scudda and Bone Crusher, and "Big City Nights." The painter/graphic designer/rapper prefers making people forget their worries — if only for three minutes and 30 seconds.

"People don't have fun with the music anymore," says the MC whose sound conjures images of the classic rap act Digital Underground. "That's what I'm about."

After landing in Atlanta in 2004, Falyon hooked up with Bone Crusher, who he'd originally met and designed T-shirts for while attending college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Falyon initially eschewed the call to rap, considering it far more profitable to focus on clothing design with his Soupy Jones imprint. But after Crusher heard him spit, he convinced Falyon to pursue music full-time. The emerging artist eventually ended up touring alongside the giant-sized Bone Crusher.

"It was hard for people to understand that I'm an artist, like this is what I do," says the MC, recalling how people would refer to him as Soupy Jones instead of Falyon. "I had to almost force feed them the music."

While Falyon easily latched onto the so-called hipster rap movement pervading the city in early 2007, his marketing savvy has made him stand out among many. He plans to use the techniques that have made him one of the most recognizable faces in Atlanta to spread his name beyond.

"Branding is everything," he says. "If you're not branding yourself, you might as well just give up because it's not gonna work."

"sean falyon: the great - the talented mr. falyon"

In today’s world of hip-hop, one would be hard-pressed to find any rapper who candidly cites MC Hammer as one of their creative inspirations or has career goals of opening a recreational center for at-risk youth, but then again, Sean Falyon isn’t your typical artist. Since 2004 the West Philadelphia native has been a fixture on the Atlanta entertainment scene with a hand in everything from music and fashion to photography and graphic design.

To hear Faylon tell it, his numerous interests simply stem from being a creative spirit. “I look at it like you’ve got a limited amount of time on this Earth, so everybody should know what [they’re] capable of doing,” Falyon says. “

It is Falyon’s music that first caught the attention of the OOMP Camp Click and Bone Crusher, who took him under his wing. Praised for his animated delivery and storytelling ability, he’s often compared to the likes of Shock G and Slick Rick. “When people here me automatically they’re going to be like, ‘This dude is a character,’ ” he says.

Regardless of whether you agree with the lofty comparisons, Falyon is clearly on to something. Along with Bone Crusher, other prominent music figures in the city are taking notice of the guy who will soon drop his EP, The Amazing Adventures of Mr. Falyon.

“I’m not a super punch line dude, you’ve got to visualize what I’m saying to you,” he says. “I kind of try to stay away from being the boring, monotone rapper guy.”

Bio

For Sean Falyon, being everywhere means more than showing up at every show or party he hears about. Sure, the Philadelphia MC has made his name by remaining ubiquitous since his 2004 migration to Atlanta, but Falyons constant presence goes beyond appearances. His goal is to use his numerous talents to stay at the top of fans minds no matter where he and his trademark beard are physically located.

If Im not there, theyre talking bout me, says the self-styled marketing guru while explaining the concept of his Be Everywhere mantra. Houston musician Cory coined the phrase after constantly running into Falyon at events across Atlanta; its defined his tireless hustle ever since. Whether Sean is rapping, hosting, or sharing his eventful life and times with fans via social media, he takes the catchphrase to heart in all aspects of his career.

Mastering the grind of an indie artist has been a process for the self-managed rhymer who handles everything from booking shows to his own album artwork. But Falyons hustle was instilled in him long before he entered the rap game. I was making custom t-shirts, selling CDs; I sold hair weave, he remembers of his college days. But once he moved to Atlanta and got the opportunity to try his hand at rap, his high-powered work ethic found a new outlet.

I linked up with Bone Crusher because I was doing some clothing stuff with him, remembers Sean of the relationship that birthed his rap career. Though hed been rhyming recreationally since high school, it wasnt until the Never Scared MC asked Falyon to hop on his mixtape that he saw it as a tangible hustle. After that I just took rap serious I seen people getting money off of it.

But his love of Hip Hop goes much deeper than his financial ambitions. After entering ninth grade at age 13, he and his friends became obsessed with tagging graffiti and battle rapping. We was just so Hip Hop, he remembers of his connection to the culture, which has remained a driving force throughout his life. Fast-forward to travelling the world with Bone Crushers camp in the mid-to-late 2000s and it would seem he was living the dream. But it wasnt until his mentor shared some wisdom that he truly understood the reality of the opportunity in front of him.

Bone sat me down one day and was like, You need to go get your name out there. Go to open mics, do whatever you can, he encouraged. Work on your show, work on your stage presence. It was on from there, as Sean took his future into his own hands and never looked back. Since stepping out on his own hes learned the value of self-dependence. I look at my career as a child, he explains. Nobody is gonna take care of your child like youre gonna take care of your child. I have people help out, but ultimately its on me at the end of the day how far my career goes.

As of now, it can go wherever he chooses to take it. From juggling gigs as an MC and host, to ambitions to get into acting, writing and producing, the man known to Be Everywhere also wants to do everything he can while he has the chance.

But no matter what hes doing, what really drives Falyon is the real-life connection he creates with fans. I love performing, reveals Sean when asked what he likes most about his job. I just love being on stage and performing for people. Its just a dope feeling to be able to reach people with music. After every show, he goes into the crowd to parlay with the people no matter how large of an audience. Just to let them know, he explains, Yo, Im out here.

And they welcome him with open arms. Whether its his rhymes or his uniquely genuine personality, they just cant get enough of Falyon. I feel that people are just comfortable around me, he says of his mysterious magnetism. Ive had this problem since I was a kid. I could never not make friends. Or could it be the beard? My beard is a magnificent accessory, he explains. Its just something awesome for everybody to gaze upon especially the ladies.

Those looking to find the future of Hip Hop should keep gazing at Falyon and his beard through 2013. Since being named by Complex.com as one of Atlantas 10 artists to watch, Falyon has been on a roll, his career gaining momentum with each new release. Hes had his videos played on MTV2 and MTV JAMS and shared the stage with Janelle Monae, Big K.R.I.T. and B.o.B., but those accomplishments are just the beginning. With no plans of slowing down anytime soon, it wont be long until Sean Falyon is loved everywhere without having to go anywhere.
