"Hear & Now: Portsmouth's Sekshun 8 goes beyond extreme metal on new CD"

© December 14, 2007

Extreme metal for the holidays, anyone?

Sekshun 8, a fiery quartet from Portsmouth, has released "Toymaker" just in time for the gift-buying season. Its cover art suggests a very un-Santa-like workshop where a sinister creator turns a toy soldier and stuffed bear into misfit toys with fangs and sharp claws.

Judging by the artwork, you might think this is just another typical death-metal act fronted by a vocalist mimicking the Cookie Monster. That's not exactly the case.

Sekshun 8 wisely shows versatility, primarily through the often melodic singing of Jason Tippins. He seems to best channel the tonality of Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, especially on "We Are the Hunted" and "Born Again Hooligan."

The band - which includes Jeff Tippins (drums), James Sadler (guitar) and Eric Briggs (bass) - breaks the genre stereotypes on the acoustic "Zombie Baby" and the metal-pop of "A Man of Sorrow."

While Sekshun 8 recorded the 10-song album on his home studio, the band has been courting the production genius of Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper/KISS/Pink Floyd). Ezrin's talents could take these headbangers to the next level.

"Q&A: Portsmouth Band is Hard Rocking "Black Winged Butterfly""

Sekshun 8 is a hard rocking band out of Portsmouth. Its members – former classmates at Woodrow Wilson High School – are brothers Jason Tippins, lead vocals, and Jeff Tippins, drums, and Eric Briggs on bass and Jimmy Muhlenbruch on guitar.
Then there’s John – think Iron Maiden’s Eddie, the zombielike mascot for that heavy metal band. You can see John on Sekshun 8’s November 2008 full-length release, “Black Winged Butterfly.” “John is a little more of a teddy bear than Eddie,” Muhlenbruch said during a lively conference call with the band.
On the album, the band received production and backing vocal help from Stevie “Vann” Lange. Lange, who was married to record producer Mutt Lange, has served as backing vocalist for several well-known artists, including Elton John and Def Leppard.
During a music industry convention, “Jason and Jeff went out to L.A. to promote a stripped-down version of the CD and was lined up with a mentor,” Muhlenbruch said. That mentor was Stevie.
“She listened to us and said, 'I think you guys got something here. Let’s do some work,’” he said. On April 19, Sekshun 8 will take the stage at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach opening for Y&T. This is how they answered our questions:

What’s the best and worst thing about the Hampton Roads music scene?
The best thing about the HR music scene is that we seem to get new fans with every show. The worst thing about the HR music scene is that we seem to be an outcast. We are a band that plays its own music, and it truly has its own sound.

Where does the band get its inspiration?
We derive our inspiration from the numerous drugs that none of us has ever taken, nor wanted to take, but would only imagine the experience of taking.

Does the band have a pre-gig ritual?
We used to engage in midget tossing, but we ran out of midgets, so we’ve sacrificed that lunacy and began having a drink together.

Has the band ever been stiffed by a venue? What happened?
Every show we get stiffed because we are playing for exposure right now.

With a fan base that is growing exponentially, Sekshun 8 brings a loyal following from all around the world. Their music has been labeled a melding of: Nickelback, Marilyn Manson, and Iron Maiden. Two of their songs are in the top 10 playlists on multiple Internet radio stations. What else could possibly make this band more intriguing? How about four guys from Portsmouth, Virginia that all grew up together. They were childhood friends and continue to be as close as family to this very day.

Their new album, Black Winged Butterfly was produced by, Stevie Vann Lange, ex-wife of “Mutt” Lange. Chet McCracken of the Doobie Brothers lent his drumming expertise to the effort. Alan Bradshaw (of Iron Maiden/Pink Floyd fame) mastered the tracks at Metropolis Studios in London, England. With names like these in the mix, the album is almost guaranteed to have a golden sound. But don’t believe what you read, listen to the attached tracks and judge for yourself.
