Compilation of various press reviews for Simian Ghost - Heist Or Hit Records

"Simian Ghost – A Million Shining Colours: New music"

Swedish three-piece Simian Ghost may look like pale-faced indie waifs but their forthcoming third album deals with some pretty hefty themes. According to the band, the songs are about the issue of alienation - specifically how they don't feel connected to their peers, or the ideals of society, or Aristotle's ideas on real reality. Oh and there's some quantum mechanics in there too apparently. For the first single, the lovely jangle of A Million Shining Colours (premiered here), Sebastian, Erik and Mathias sing sweetly about a life wasted. "The song is about having spent half your life making music or communicative art in some fashion, realising the insignificance in what you are doing and coming to terms with this," they explain. "It's also about feeling disconnected with the way our western culture is heading in general, a kind of naive call for a change, or revolution if you will. It's like a half cynical hippie anthem." Featuring a chorus that runs, "I have wasted all of my time" and lots of lightly strummed guitar, it's definitely got that miserablist indie anthem thing going, all pretty melodies and over the top lyrics about putting your cardigan on the wrong way round or something.

A Million Shining Colours is released on 9 December. - The Guardian

"Simian Ghost: Youth"

Every now and then an album comes along that wins you over through the simplest, age-old joys of music: melody, charm and the intrinsic satisfaction of perfect symmetry. Simian Ghost are a Swedish three-piece who are the pet project of Sebastian Amström, a producer who combines a traditional band structure with all kinds of strange electronic effects.
He’s found the perfect balance of modernity and traditional songwriting on their second album, which belongs to a lineage of inventive pop from the Beach Boys to Beach House whilst sounding like it could only have been made in the present. - The Times (UK)

SIMIAN GHOST
‘Fun’

Released on 7 October 2016

“Six years of making music. Five years of being a band. Four years of doctors and pills. Three diagnoses, all pointing in different directions. No discussion though, they’re all right of course.”

Simian Ghost started out as a recording project by Swedish songwriter Sebastian Arnström. After two critically acclaimed releases as a solo act, he asked his brother Erik Klinga and their mutual friend Mathias Zachrisson to join him.

Whilst receiving attention from both national and international press, the band released their first LP as a band, ‘Youth’, in 2012. Continuing the success of the previous efforts, ‘Youth’ garnered excellent reviews, including a lead review in The Times and a spot in The Guardian naming it “an early contender for the album of the year”.

The band spent more time honing in on their craft and then in 2014, released the 18 track double album ‘The Veil’. Following the thematically lighter ‘Youth’, it was a longer album focusing on the subjects of mental instability and western philosophy, while further pushing the idea of the music itself as a living being, disconnected from it’s authors.

Now a quartet (including the newly acquired bassist Wilhelm Magnusson), the band is preparing to release their fourth self-titled album ‘Simian Ghost’.
Having made all their previous recordings at home with minimal equipment and resources, this album will be the first to contain some studio-recorded material. ”We’re just a bunch of guys doing stuff at home really”, the band states, ”so in many ways this feels like our debut album. We’re ready to do that now”.

‘Fun’ is the introductory track from the self-titled album ‘Simian Ghost' and is the first release from the record, and although it’s not a single as such, it’s a track that re-introduces Simian Ghost and their refreshing and new musical direction.

Sebastian states: “Six years of making music. Five years of being a band. Four years of doctors and pills. Three diagnoses; each pointing in different directions. No discussions though, they’re all right of course.

Two collections of demos released as albums. One before that, some random memos from infinite ideas, slowly tuned into a coherent message, albeit deftly buried.

Five years of the Earth spinning faster—of war, political turmoil and right wing airheads grabbing positions of power. Five years of cooking shows, low-fare airlines and endless entitlement. Five years of our good intentions turning into memes and pointless campaigns on social media.

But we’ll keep coming back, as always—all yours.”

‘Simian Ghost’ will be available on all streaming services in early 2017.

Bio

Swedish troupe Simian Ghost are the intelligent pop brainchild of gifted songwriter Sebastian Arnström. At first a solo project, Sebastian's debut album under this moniker, Infinite Traffic Everywhere, was released on Playground Music in Sweden during the winter of 2010 to great enthusiasm and critical acclaim.  It topped the critics chart in their home country and was voted record of the year by the readers at Dagensskiva.se. Shortly after the release of the debut, a live trio with Sebastian's little brother Erik Klinga and his high school friend Mathias Zachrisson joining the band. This trio, tight musically and personally, spent the early part of the year touring Sweden and sharing stages with the likes of Mount Kimbie, SBTRKT and Niki and the Dove amongst others.

2011's defining moment was to come with the announcement of their first UK release - the seven song EP, entitled Lovelorn - to be issued through the influential independent label Heist Or Hit Records (The Answering Machine, LoveLikeFire, Letting Up Despite Great Faults). In the same vein as their debut, the record was written, recorded and produced by Sebastian Arnström.

This intimate and homespun seven song EP was tentatively sent to a wider audience of journalists and met with a positive response from credible media. The EP's lead track, "Free Agent", premiered with arguably the world's biggest music site, Pitchfork Media, on the week of their key redesign, and then went on to also be deemed Track Of The Day with the likes of Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, Beat and Snipe.

This and a subsequent sleuth of pieces with the likes of Artrocker, The Fly and Drowned In Sound left the band in high regard and demand at the turn of the year.

At the start of 2012, Simian Ghost's momentum continued with them being featured as the year's first New Band Of The Day with the UK's biggest broadsheet, The Guardian, and the first new material from their second record was released on January 16th in the form of stylish new single, "Wolf Girl". The band’s second album, titled "Youth", was released on March 5th and strengthened their ties further with Heist Or Hit. The album was acclaimed in many publications including The London Times. The band were invited by the BBC to play sessions on both BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6Music. During the remainder of 2012, the band toured heavily in Sweden, the UK and Europe.  At Christmas in 2012, the band released some new tracks to fans in advance of the release of their 3rd album in 2013.

In 2014, the band showcased at SXSW and at CMJ prior to releasing their well received double vinyl album worldwide, “The Veil”. Commenting on the release, the influential Drowned In Sound said “Like some sort of musical spectre, Sweden’s Simian Ghost haunt the grey area between ‘alternative’ and ‘pop’, offering the nuance and depth you’d expect from the nebulous former genre combined with the instant appeal of the latter”

In 2015/16, the band started work on their 4th album which has been co-produced in Sweden with Thomas Hedlund of the band Phoenix. The first introductory track from the album ('Fun') was released worldwide on 12 Oct 2016 in conjunction with two private music industry showcases in London and Stockholm. The self titled album is scheduled for worldwide release in Spring 2017.
