"A Little Seclusion Goes a Long Way"

Electric Light by Stonewheel
"When Louisville jamsters Stonewheel entered the studio last spring to record the follow-up to their first album, 2006's acclaimed Dashboard, they unplugged the clocks, took off their watches, and blocked out all of the windows at Louisville's Downtown Recording Studios, locking themselves away for three days and nights in an unrestrained, marathon-jam session. In the resulting Electric Light, it's quite apparent that the seclusion paid off. The record offers an unusually diverse, yet totally cohesive set of songs, managing to highlight the band's musical strengths as well as lead singer/songwriter Morgan Shallcross' song-crafting skills. Most importantly, the band succeeded in capturing the spirit of their stellar live performances. Consequently, E.L. grooves from end to end. Shallcross' unpretentious, storyteller vocal stylings shine throughout the record, most notably on the sweet "Sleep to Dream," and the airy, strumming acoustic rhythms of "June Bug." The rest of the album's 11 tunes offer up everything from poppy cuts like the opening track "Let Me Know" to deep down, dirty grooves like those found on "Another Train Song" and "The September Song." The latter two tracks, in my opinion, really show off what Stonewheel does well. The formula goes like this: bassist Sean Ayres, along with drummer Troy Campbell and rhythm guitarist Keith Burchett, weave together a thick, deep-pocketed groove while Shallcross sets the scene, leaving lead guitarist Chris Greenwell (also of Slackshop), and keys guru/Hammond B3 pilot David Taylor to drive the jams into the Ether. All in all, the guys from Stonewheel have put in another great effort. The sheer musicality of the band combined with thoughtful accessible songwriting makes Electric Light an easy album to listen to straight through, or at least while your electricity stays on. "Somewhere Brian Wilson Is Applauding"

Dashboard by Stonewheel
"Somewhere Brian Wilson is applauding the brave attempt Stonewheel took in channeling what the Beach Boys brought to the table in the 60’s and 70’s, and making it relevant in their own music today.Fast-paced, enthusiastic tracks, written by lead vocalist Morgan Shallcross, are what bring this Louisville band’s music to life. This new album feels like a true representation of a time long-gone. Through catchy songs and bohemian lyrics ,the group avoids clichés in favor and fresh, unpredictable material. “Go for Gin,” “Santa Ana Winds” and the title track bring personality and a sense of true individuality. “Dashboard” has a great name and sound for a great summertime soundtrack. Give a listen, and just relax." - Andrew Sellinger - LEO Weekly

Bio

Stonewheel is a six piece rock-n-roll band from Louisville, Kentucky, born out of the classic American songwriting tradition and a sense of community. The band was formed in November 2003 by friendship and love of music. The group currently includes Morgan Shallcross (lead vocals & guitar), David Taylor (keyboards, vocals), Chris Greenwell (guitar & vocals), Sean Ayres (bass), Jaret Ellis (drums) and Angela Scharfenberger (percussion). Their live performances quickly caught the public eye, partly in tribute to keyboardist David Taylor's screaming custom-built Hammond B3 organ and Leslie rotating speaker combo. The classic B3 sound seemed to give Stonewheel an identity that was all it's own in the Louisville area.

The band's repertoire started as a blend of classic roots/rock cover songs (Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Band, Little Feat, Rolling Stones, etc.) sprinkled with a few originals. That format soon evolved into more and more originals being written and thrown into the sets over the years, eventually leading to the recording of their first record "Dashboard" (2006). The album garnered significant success with audiences and radio, attracting a new legion of fans to the fold. The song "Go For Gin" especially hit a hometown note with it's story of a betting man bringing it all home with the 1994 Derby winner of the same name.

During the next stretch, Stonewheel didn't let up. Picking up regular monthly gigs and appearing at regional festivals (Terrapin Hill, Peak Summit, Love Fest) only served to tighten the band's sound and strength of songwriting, as evidenced by their second release "Electric Light" (2009). Reviewer Steve Morgan states "Shallcross' unpretentious, storyteller vocal stylings shine throughout the record" while "capturing the spirit of their stellar live performances" (Louisville Music News). Shortly after it's release, the album began to gain momentum with Louisville's own WFPK supporting the record by the addition of "Another Train Song" to their regular rotation and live in-studio appearances.

In 2011 the band released another full-length record entitled "Feel Like Yesterday" - a rockin' collection of originals that highlight their unique brand of melodies and groove. And to much delight, the opening track "With You All The Way" is already becoming a favorite of radio stations nationwide. Even Italy is getting in on the Stonewheel Magic, where the band is quickly gaining popularity. Italian record store Papermoon writes "the young band of Kentucky has the class and ability to offer a very versatile soundtrack to our days", while Caru writes that "the Stonewheel shall bring a perfect cocktail of rhythm, melody and groove". In addition, "Feel Like Yesterday" has recently become part of the Pandora Radio Genome, so head on over an create your own Stonewheel Radio Station.

Summer 2014 brought the arrival of a brand new record "Til The Cows Come Home", a whole new blend of acoustic melody, pop, rock, and jam.  The leadoff track, "Red Eye", proved to be a favorite among radio stations nationwide.

2023 brings a fresh new batch of songs with a re-organized, energized lineup and has already begun recording what should be an exciting new release later this year.

Don't miss out on the Stonewheel experience!
