"Rockabilly Riot March 31, 2012"

“THE BLACKRATS FUCKING RULE!” screamed a man standing directly beside me at the end of every Blackrats song. While my left ear may never be the same, his excitement was not unfounded. The Black Rats did, indeed, rule. As much swagger as a psychobilly band can have, and just enough menace to make people not familiar with the genre stand up and take notice, the Rats got the floor crowded, sweaty and dance-tastic. With the jauntiness of ska, the furiousness of punk, and the storytelling of country, The Black Rats played up a great relationship with the audience. Vocalist Brad Smith dropped his guitar about halfway through the set and focused on signing and interacting, a great decision that had the packed dance floor eating out of his hands. Having a party, drinking whiskey, and looking for a band to get things sweaty? Hire The Blackrats. Ye shan’t be disappointed. - Noisography

Bio

The Blackrats is a Canadian band based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Transcending the sounds of traditional rockabilly and psychobilly, The Blackrats take their love for B movies, horror films, and comic books, and combine them into songs almost anyone can relate to.

Formed in 2009, The Blackrats rocked their way up the ranks of Halifax's thriving music scene with the independently produced and recorded release of their debut album, Horrorbilly for Hire, in 2011. They've since gained a cult fan base in both Canada and the USA, being heard from coast to coast on Rue Morgue Radio, Psycho Radio, and Zorch Radio in Seattle. In early 2013 they independently released their EP, King of Monsters, including a special edition 7 glow in the dark vinyl, while they ramp up to release a full-length album in 2014. Due to their independent success, in 2013 they were approached and signed by Splatterhouse Wreckords and will be re-releasing their first two albums under their label.

The Blackrats have been performing regularly in Nova Scotia, as well as hitting the stage with successful bands such as Nashville Pussy, the Supersuckers, The Brains, The Creepshow, The Mahones, and Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz.

Consisting of the rocking rhythm and vocals of Brad Blackrat, the slap and rumble of Pete Green on the upright bass, the screaming shredding lead guitar of Troy Wilson, the sexy smooth saxophone of Adam Nelson, and the pulse pounding drums of Ian Kean. The Blackrats have proven to be a horrific force to be reckoned with and will shake you right down to your bones with their spooky brand of Rock & Roll.
