Biography

Taking off from Austin, Texas, The Flying Club performs an original mix of American, Brazilian and other pop music influences. With the release of 2006s Far and Away a new sound came to life which received critical praise from the likes of Performing Songwriter Magazine, Austin Music + Entertainment, Austin InSite and The Muses Muse, as well as radio airplay in the US, Brazil and Europe. 2009 brings a new sound for the stage and for recordings, with new material and new releases due out in the late spring.

About the album:

The Flying Club's debut album "Far and Away," released in 2006, is the result of a year-long collaboration of musicians, producers and engineers in Austin, Texas and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Founded by drummer/composer Bruce Popky, the project had simple origins as a series of home-studio recordings, in which he explored integrating Brazilian pop sensibilities with original American pop music. With a handful of compositions recorded, he started putting together a group to perform them live.

To record the album, he enlisted the help and guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Mark Hallman, whose many credits include Eliza Gilkyson, Ani DiFranco and Carole King. Rio-based producer/guitarist/composer Eugenio Dale joined the project next, with a long history of hit songs, successful recordings and live performances to his credit. Across two hemispheres, recording in both Austin and Rio, the trio collaborated on balancing the many diverse elements that comprise the unique sound of "Far and Away." As Austin Music Magazine writer Derek Lowe describes it, the album "doesn't fit into the usual perceptions of either city's music...."

Dale plays guitar on all of the tracks as well as various percussion, and Hallman adds keyboards and additional guitar. Coutinho plays a wide variety of percussion throughout the album, as Popky anchors the tracks on the drums and sings backing vocals behind Amanda Walker's lead. Top musicians from both cities also contribute to the album, including: in Rio de Janeiro, bassist Gasto Villeroy, guitarist Billy Brando and string arranger Luiz Avellar; in Austin, keyboardist Rolf Ordahl, and guitarist Adam Temple.

Although the album's pedigree contains much Brazil, the sound is uniquely American. The arrangements delve into adventurous rhythmic, melodic and harmonic territory, but intend to strike a balance between these aspects and appealing to many different kinds of listeners.

"Far and Away" was honored as a "Top 12 DIY Pick" in the July/August 2006 issue of Performing Songwriter Magazine and has received three 2006 "Muse's Muse Awards." Tracks from the album have received airplay in over 30 Triple-A radio stations in the United States as well as rotating commercial radio airplay in Rio de Janeiro, and multiple daily spins on Globo FM, second largest radio station in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The single "Another Day" has received regular airplay on Radio Swiss Pop (Switzerland) for much of 2007.

"Far and Away" is available for purchase at Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, Napster.com, Rhapsody.com and the iTunes Music Store.

Birds

Written By: Bruce Popky

out on a limb, this day’s getting dim
can hardly see my own wing
the light still plays on feathers that stay
by the water, I hear them sing
I realize sometimes half of what I’m missing
if today I can’t find, tomorrow remind me
to try something harder

down at the park, imaginary mark
thousands perch and feed
back to the nest, some food for the rest
and some will always lead
I realize sometimes half of what I’m missing
a gathering team can split at the seam
we all need each other

there they go
they fly away
they don’t know
but they hear that whistle blow
somewhere in the world
calling, it takes them back

searching the grass for pieces that last
taking strands for the building
riding away the winds of the day
senses overfilling
I realize sometimes half of what I’m missing
leaving this place, I remember a face
and home still farther

there they go
they fly away
they don’t know
but they hear that whistle blow
somewhere in the world
calling, it takes them back

there they go
they fly away
they don’t know
but they hear that whistle blow
somewhere in the world
calling, it takes them back

calling, it takes them back

Far and Away

Written By: Bruce Popky

far and away
the best things I’ve ever had
didn’t fill my pockets
made me a little sad
and now, it’s still too soon
to look back on
those few

far and away
the best note I’ve ever sung
came just after silence had rung
and now, it’s still too soon
to look back on
that tune

the prize we are after
a song just like laughter
from where we are
it’s not so far apart
it’s not any faster
can’t be mastered
seen it from afar
did I know it from the start
i knew it from the start

far and away
the best thing I’ve ever done
was to turn the corner
and guess you are the one
and now, it’s still too soon
to look back on
loving you

far and away
the best times I’ve ever seen
were ones I didn’t
ever hope or mean
and now, it’s still too soon
to look back on
like we do

the prize we are after
a song just like laughter
from where we are
it’s not so far apart
it’s not any faster
can’t be mastered
seen it from afar
did I know it from the start
i knew it from the start

Friends of Mine

Written By: Bruce Popky

on the corner, down the edge of the street
under a light is where we used to meet
we’d get together, at least ten all told
more than once I wished that we were old
enough to drive it, to take it out of town
maybe the ocean, to hear that sound

true enough we were bored and didn’t know
how many times we’d wish it were so
but for the moment for this summer night
we’re watching the cars and it’s all right

friends of mine
you can really let it shine
drink up all the wine
don’t save for another time

in the back room, past the office door
dirty couches, beer is on the floor
we’ll start it again soon, the house is full of light
I smoke a little and pass to the right
we’re gonna drive it, take it out of town
the farther we go the better we’ll be found

true enough we were high and didn’t know
how many times we’d wish it were so
but for the moment for this summer night
we’re on a break and it’s all right

friends of mine
you can really let it shine
drink up all the wine
don’t save for another time
friends of mine
you can really let it shine
drink up all the wine
don’t save for another time

friends of mine
you can really let it shine
drink up all the wine
don’t save for another time
friends of mine
you can really let it shine
drink up all the wine
don’t save for another time

Sweet Daydream

Written By: Bruce Popky

take this picture from the window frame
all remains
black and white
still the same
leave the colors running in between
every scene
on and on
sweet daydream

the sun is sinking fast
and when it does, you’ll go
down past your own bed
around to the end you know

take some gentle words and you may find
more unwind
weaving through
peaceful lines
leave these threads as they are holding on
staying strong
playing out
your daydream song

the sun is sinking fast
and when it does, you’ll go
down past your own bed
around to the end you know
