"Acoustic Cafe"

I just wanted to take a minute to thank you guys for coming to the Acoustic Cafe. From a business perspective, I appreciate that you were on time, professional, promoted your show, and brought fans in. And your show was fantastic. I love being in the room hearing comments like "These guys are great. Why haven't they been here before?" and "You can tell they've been together awhile. They're totally comfortable on stage and they're having a great time." Everyone, staff included, loved your music. The eclectic nature combined with your talent make for a wonderfully entertaining show. Thanks for a fun night. We are genuinely looking forward to your upcoming show here and working with you down the road.

Thanks so much,
Chris Morgan

"Lawn Boys make menagerie of music"

By TIM MALCOLM
Norwich Bulletin

“There’s a big difference between playing music and making music,” said Max Browning, bassist of the Lawn Boys, a New London act that has been — of course — making music since the 1990s.

Playing a conglomoration of many styles of music, the Lawn Boys have had good success in the region, performing across New England to this day.

Though comprised of Browning, vocalist/string instrumentalist Steve Cleary, keyboarist Chris Pike and drummer Darren McGill, the Lawn Boys are practically never a quartet. They’re joined regularly by percussionist Greg Hamby, percussionist Ian Kelly, oboist Dr. Harvey Snitkin and percussionist Ed Toth, who was the drummer for alt-rock band Vertical Horizon and is now a Doobie Brother.

Many of the band’s members have had success away from the Lawn Boys. Browning was a musician for the musical “Godspell” and toured with the Guess Who. All the success and experience has led to a band that is able to pull from multiple genres and create arresting rhythms and melodies.

“Any other musician, you go through a phase where you listen to Thelonious Monk and say, ‘I wanna do some of that,’ ” Browning said.

They’ll take different instruments and incorporate them into their songs, then sometimes create entire songs for that instrument.

“It inspires you to do somethng,” Browning said. “You can have a sitar and write a couple notes and put it in the background somehwere, or you can write a song for the sitar.”

Lately they’ve been working with the theremin (the instrument that was originally thought to have given The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” its vibrations). Their model is a baby doll’s head that, when playing, has laser-red eyes.

“That’s the thing you see now on (our) t-shirts,” Browning said. “It’s a trip to play.”
Or make.

"Boys will be Boys"

Any time new tunes cross this desk and the first reaction is, “Hey, that sort of reminds me of what it would sound like if Tony Williams and Martin Barre played in the Meters” - and it's not Barre and Williams playing in the Meters - well, a few things spring to mind. As was the case when I first heard “Stump” by New London band the Lawn Boys.

But in the time it took to type this, the next tune was up, and it reminded me of Zappa playing in Los Hombres Calientes.

So what we have is the Lawn Boys - a seriously great amalgam of players who aren't so serious that they can't have a great, witty time cross-pollinating a variety of styles in a fashion that's challenging but also instantly accessible. Fans of the very fine Incognito Sofa Love will really enjoy the Lawn Boys, and an excellent opp to see the Boys happens Saturday when they play the Oasis Pub in New London. And as you'll assuredly learn, music as created by the Lawn Boys is enthusiastically and gleefully its own reward.

The Lawn Boys is an original band from New London, Ct. with a mix of rock, jam, world, and jazz. The band is made up of musicians who individually have been playing for well over twenty years. Members have played in popular regional bands and also have been part of national acts Vertical Horizon and The Doobie Brothers. They have opened for such touring acts as The Breakfast at Toad's Place, New Haven Ct., Pat McGee of the Pat McGee Band and Keith Kane of Vertical Horizon, at the Webster Theater, Hartford, Ct, and The Attic, a touring band from RI., at The Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport, Ct. They've also done radio shows in New Paltz, NY and Medford (Boston) Ma.. They've played and are scheduled for a number of music festivals this season including the Keene Music Festival, Keene, New Hampshire, the Freedom and Harvest Festivals, Starks, ME, Harmony Harvest Festival, Harmony, ME, and Hobofest in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The Lawn Boys has provided an opportunity for them to freely create music with their own unique and open-minded approach. With influences from The Beatles to Zappa, James Brown to Ravi Shankar, and BB King to the Mahavishnu Orchestra - it's hard to stay exactly where their music style ends up. One thing is for sure, they love to make music. It's all good. Rock, funk, jazz, reggae, progressive, world or a fusion of each. "We're having a blast going any direction the music takes us. Hope we can take you with us! "
